English City Guide to Astana, Kazakhstan

Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to provide a usable and convenient English city guide to Astana, the young capital of Kazakhstan, for foreign visitors and residents, and to establish some standards for evaluating the design features of successful travel guides. Made the capital city of Kazakhstan in 1997, Astana has been rapidly developing into the main political, cultural and economic center of the country. However, Astana is still not well-known to foreign visitors. This is partly because there is no comprehensive guidebook to Astana available in the market. Therefore, this project aims to introduce the capital of Kazakhstan to foreign visitors by producing a comprehensive guidebook that contains both travel and living information in Astana. This guidebook is accompanied by a theoretical paper that discusses specific principles of usable design for the guidebook genre, provides analysis of published guidebooks, and presents new usability features applied in designing the Astana guide. Results of usability testing showed that users can benefit from cutaway tabs, subject-specific maps, page-to-page layout, and spiral binding, and that they prefer a pocket-sized guidebook to the standard size of 5.5 x 8.5 inches. Features of right margin justification were also tested with inconclusive results.;본 논문은 외국인 여행객이나 체류자에게 카자흐스탄의 새 수도인 아스타나에 대하여 유용하고도 편리한 영어 안내서를 제공하고, 성공적인 관광 안내서의 디자인적 요소에 대한 평가 기준들을 정립하고자 한다. 아스타나는 1997년 카자흐스탄의 수도로 세워진 이후 정치, 경제, 문화적 중심지로 빠르게 성장해왔다. 하지만 아스타나는 외국인 방문객들에게 아직 생소한 도시이며, 이는 부분적으로 아스타나를 충실히 알려주는 안내서를 시중에서 구하기 어렵다는 점에서 기인한다. 따라서 본 논문의 목적은 아스타나에 대한 여행 및 생활 정보를 수록한 포괄적인 안내서를 제작하여 카자흐스탄의 수도를 외국인들에게 알리는 것에 있다. 동시에 본 논문은 학적인 연구를 위한 것이다. 본 논문은 관광 안내서 장르의 실용적인 디자인에 관한 세부적 원칙들을 논하고, 기존에 출간된 안내서들을 분석하며, 아스타나 안내서를 디자인함에 있어서 유용한 새로운 요소들을 제공할 것이다. 유용성의 측면에 관한 시험 결과, 사용자들은 색인과 주제별 지도, page-to-page 레이아웃, 스프링 제본을 편리하게 여겼다. 또 사용자들은 기존의 5.5 x 8.5 인치보다는 포켓 사이즈의 관광 안내서를 선호하였다. 오른쪽에 여백을 둔 정판역시 시험해 보았으나 유의미한 결과는 도출되지 않았다.
