한국 사찰 단청 문양을 응용한 니트웨어 디자인 연구

Abstract

현대의 니트 산업은 21세기 라이프스타일과 패션의 흐름에 적합한 산업으로, 그 중요도가 점차 높아지며 수요도 증대되고 있다. 이는 주5일 근무로 레저와 스포츠 등 활발한 여가 생활로 인해 신축성 있는 편안하고 활동적인 니트웨어를 선호하게 되면서 나타난 추세이다. 또한 니트웨어는 컴퓨터 니트 시대와 수공예의 부활이라는 두 분야가 동시에 성장하면서 기능성과 예술성을 갖춘 새로운 장르로 인정받기 시작했으며, 원사, 색채, 조직, 기법 등에 따라 무수한 변화를 줄 수 있으며, 소비자의 개성을 연출하는데 있어 다양한 디자인을 할 수 있다는 장점이 있다. 최근 세계패션의 방향은 문화와 생활이 범세계적으로 일원화된 한 사조의 지배현상에서 벗어나려고 하고 있으며, 독창적인 문화나 전통을 재해석하여 현대적으로 이를 발전시키려는 노력이 시대적으로 부각되고 있다. 특히 동양적인 색채와 문양이 세계 패션 경향에 중요한 영향을 미치는 가운데 한국 전통 문양에 대한 관심이 점차 고조되고 있으며 이를 응용한 패션디자인 개발이 시급하다. 이에 본 연구는 우리 고유의 전통문양인 단청 문양을 현대의 패션 경향에 맞는 실용적인 니트웨어 디자인의 개발에 응용하여 전통의 현대적 활용뿐 아니라 단청 문양의 뛰어난 형태미와 색채감각을 예술적으로 재구성하여 디자인의 표현 영역을 확대시키고자 함에 목적이 있다. 본 연구의 내용 및 방법으로는 첫째, 문헌고찰과 선행연구를 통하여 단청의 개념과 역사 그리고 단청 문양의 기본 요소와 분류에 대해 살펴본 후, 단청 문양을 조형적으로 분석하였다. 조형적 분석은 단청 문양의 형태와 구성방식 그리고 색채의 세가지 요소를 분석하여 연구하였다. 둘째, 전문 서적을 통하여 단청 문양을 응용한 제품 디자인과 국내외 패션 전문지, 패션 전문 정보 사이트 및 인터넷 정보를 통하여 단청문양을 활용한 현대 패션 디자인의 사례를 살펴보았다. 셋째, 연구된 자료를 토대로 니트의 편직 기법 중 단청의 복잡한 문양과 다채로운 색채를 표현하는데 용이한 인타샤 기법을 선택하고, 니트의 개념과 역사, 조직의 종류를 국내외의 문헌고찰, 선행 연구, 정기 간행물, 니트업체 방문 등을 통하여 고찰하였고, 작품의 편직 기법인 인타샤 기법을 살펴보았다. 또한 해외 컬렉션에서 보여진 자료 사진을 통하여 인타샤 기법을 이용한 니트웨어를 연구하여 분석하였다. 넷째, 단청 문양을 응용하여 단순화, 반복, 강조 등을 시켜 기하학적으로 선과 형태의 변화를 주고 명도와 채도의 다양한 변화를 통하여 색채의 변형을 주고 모티브를 재구성하여 디자인하고, 인타샤 기법을 이용하여 니트웨어에 응용하여 총 8점의 니트웨어 디자인을 제작하였다. 본 연구를 통하여 얻은 결론은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 단청 문양을 모티브로 하여 한국적 이미지를 현대적 감각에 맞도록 형태를 단순화, 양식화하여 응용함으로써 실용성을 갖춘 현대 패션 디자인에 접목시킬 수 있었다. 둘째, 단청 문양의 독창적인 형태와 색채는 디자인 아이디어의 원천으로써, 형태의 다양한 조합과 재구성을 통하여 무한한 디자인의 가능성을 가지며, 강렬하고 풍부한 한 색채는 명도와 채도의 변화를 통하여 다양한 색조의 변화가 가능하여 단청의 이미지를 전달하면서 다채로운 색채 이미지를 표현하기에 적당하다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 셋째, 니트웨어 디자인의 편직 기법 중 하나인 인타샤 편직 기법은 다양한 색채의 사용이 가능하여 문양을 자유자재로 표현할 수 있어 단청의 문양과 색채를 표현하기에 가장 효과적인 기법으로 확인되었고, 또한 니트의 두께가 얇아 편안한 착용감을 주며 고급스러운 이미지를 표출시킬 수 있음이 확인되었다. 또한 인타샤 기법은 인타콤과 컴퓨터 편기를 이용함으로 대량생산이 가능한 기법으로 우리나라의 니트 패션 산업을 성장•발전시키기에 매우 적합함을 알 수 있었다. 넷째, 기계자수를 니트웨어에 접목시켜 한층 더 섬세한 표현 효과를 얻을 수 있었다. 다섯째, 현대 패션디자인에 있어 전통 문양의 활용은 우리의 주체성을 일깨워 우리 문화에 대한 긍지를 고취시키고, 세계 무대에서 차별화되면서 한국의 패션디자인의 독창성과 창조성을 표현할 수 있는 영역임을 인식할 수 있었다. 본 연구를 통해 기존의 니트웨어에서 보여지던 획일화된 디자인이 아닌 전통에 대한 끊임없는 관심과 연구를 통해 전통의 계승과 재창조를 현대화시켜 패션 디자인에 응용하고 앞으로 더 다양한 기법과 소재의 연구를 한다면 우리나라 니트웨어의 경쟁력을 키워 니트 산업을 고부가가치 산업으로 발전시키는 큰 원동력이 될 것으로 생각된다.;Knitwear has been gaining importance in the 21st century as a critical component of fashion industry. Versatility of its designs, countless ways in which knitwear can be designed and interpreted, and its qualities such as elasticity, and flexibility, and resiliencies can be counted as reasons for its new found popularity. Mass production of knitwear has also gotten easier with development of computer and high tech knitting machines which greatly increases the production capacity and the degree of exquisite patterns which can be knitted. A resurgence of traditional fine embroidery done by hand is also getting applauded for its exquisite artistic beauty. Consequently, knitwear appeals to a diverse groups of modern consumers for various reasons. Recent trends in global fashion industry acknowledge the uniqueness of different cultures and encourage designers to find inspirations from around the world. Many ethnic motifs and symbols were reinterpreted and modernized into wearable clothing. As more and more designers have been getting their inspirations from East Asian cultures, there has been an increase of interest in traditional Korean motifs and application of them to fashion is desperately needed. The purpose of this thesis is to analyze Dancheong, a form of traditional Korean architectural art found in temples for decorative and practical reasons, famous for its spectacular colors and geometric patterns, and reinterpret it into modern design. Dancheong’s history, design, and symbolic factors will be examined and its rich motif will be used as an inspiration to design knitwear. Furthermore, eight pieces of Dancheong inspired knitwear will be designed and produced for consumers. First, Dancheong's history and different types of Dancheong patterns will be analyzed for their symbolic and aesthetic purposes. Second, examples of industrial and fashion designs inspired by Dancheong from industry magazines and websites will be used for brainstorming. Third, various knitting techniques will be reviewed to find a technique best suited to represent Dancheong’s complicated but stunning motifs and colors. Finally, once the technique is decided upon, using the Dancheong motifs as my inspiration, and the chosen knitting technique to execute the designs, eight pieces of ready to wear knitwear pieces will be designed and produced. By conducting a comprehensive analysis of Dancheong motifs and seeking a way to reinvent the famous Korean art, it was concluded that Dancheong's history, rich color palette and geometric patterns make it an excellent source of inspiration, with unlimited design possibilities. The intarsia technique was found to be ideal for producing my eight Dancheong inspired knitwear pieces due to its ability to represent complex geometric shapes. And, since yarns are not carried across the back of the designs and are left hanging instead, the intarsia method creates thin and wearable knits. I researched previous examples of knitwear woven by the intarsia method, and visited manufacturers specializing in producing intarsia knitwear. Availability of computer operated knitting machines such as intarcom makes mass production easy and application of machine embroidery also enabled delicate details to be woven. Following the steps mentioned above, I was able to modernize the traditional Korean design of Dancheong and reinterpret it into wearable fashion. Transformation of traditional Korean motifs into modern concepts highlights the distinctiveness of Korean art in the global market. Pursuing the idea further, reinvention of Korean motifs should lead to additional research and development on various methods and techniques of producing knitwear and should become the driving force in increasing the competitiveness of Korean knitwear industry. I hope this thesis will assist many others in the future to find inspirations in traditional Korean patterns and artifacts such as Dancheong and encourage using them in various aspects of fashion and industrial designs.
