전제 투사, 전제 적합화와 맥락적 요소

Abstract

This thesis comprehensively examines previous theories on presupposition, namely, theories on the notion of presupposition, the problem of presupposition projection, and the accommodation of presupposition based on dynamic semantics. First, it is discussed that the approaches to the notion of presupposition are divided into two kinds, that is, semantic and pragmatic approaches. Semantic presupposition is defined in terms of truth conditions and entailment, whereas pragmatic presupposition, advanced by Stalnaker (1973, 1974) and Karttunen (1973, 1974), is defined in terms of pragmatic elements such as speaker, hearer, context, and belief. Semantic and pragmatic theories on the notion of presupposition both have their own problems, but these two approaches together complementarily capture the crucial nature of the notion of presupposition. Second, the problem of presupposition projection, which is known to be the so-called touchstone to evaluate the validity of a presupposition theory, is critically scrutinized. The theories on the problem of presupposition projection are categorized as follows: the filtering approach, proposed by Karttunen (1973, 1974), Karttunen & Peters (1979), and Heim (1983), among others, and the cancellation approach, proposed by Gazdar (1979) and Soames (1979). Both the filtering approach and the cancellation approach reveal insufficiency, which leads Soames (1982) to propose an integrated approach that combines both of these two mechanisms of presupposition projection, i.e., filtering and cancellation. Third, some representative approaches to the accommodation of the presupposition projection are investigated, including Heim (1983), van der Sandt (1988, 1989), and Beaver (1992). Finally, this thesis refutes, with some supporting examples, the contention that the conditional presupposition presented in the filtering theory is logically weak. The present study also suggests that when the processes of accommodation and context change are considered, conditional presuppositions do exist, referring to van Rooij (2007), Kadmon (2001), and Beaver and Zeevat's (2007) recent theories. Additionally, this thesis proposes that contextual factors such as common ground play more important roles than the factor of inherent preference for global accommodation in determining the presuppositions of complex sentences.;본 논문은 전제에 관한 이론들을 총괄적으로 정리하고 그 이론들의 발전 과정을 살펴보았다. 구체적으로는, 전제의 정의와 전제 투사에 관한 이론들뿐만 아니라, 동적 의미론에 바탕을 둔 적합화 현상을 이용하여 전제 투사를 설명한 이론들의 핵심이 무엇이며 각각의 문제점은 무엇인지를 고찰하였다. 먼저, 전제의 정의에 관한 이론들을 살펴보았는데, 전제의 정의에 관한 이론은 전제를 진리 조건 의미론의 관점에서 정의한 의미적 이론과 화용적 요소를 고려하여 정의한 화용적 이론으로 구분된다. 진리 조건과 함의로 정의된 의미적 전제와 Stalnaker(1973, 1974), Karttunen(1973, 1974) 등에 의해 제시된 화용적 전제 모두 문제점이 있지만, 결국 이 둘은 상호보완적인 역할을 한다고 볼 수 있다. 이어서, 전제 이론의 핵심이라고 할 수 있는 전제 투사 이론에 대한 논의들을 비판적으로 살펴보았다. 전제 투사에 관한 이론은 Karttunen(1973, 1974), Karttunen과 Peters(1979), Heim(1983)에 의해 제시되고 발전된 여과 이론과 Gazdar(1979), Soames(1979, 1982)에 의해 제시된 삭제 이론으로 나뉜다. 이들은 각각의 문제점을 가지고 있으며, 이로 인해 Soames(1982)는 여과와 삭제의 통합 이론을 제시하였다. 마지막으로, 적합화의 개념을 소개하면서 적합화를 이용하여 전제 투사를 분석한 Heim(1983), van der Sandt(1988, 1989), Beaver(1992)의 이론을 고찰하였다. 더 나아가, van Rooij(2007), Kadmon(2001), Beaver와 Zeevat(2007) 등의 최근 논의들을 인용하면서, 적합화 및 맥락의 변화를 고려했을 때 여과 이론에서 제시한 조건문 형태의 전제가 논리적으로 약하다는 주장이 설득력이 부족함을 보이고자 하였다. 뿐만 아니라, 전제의 예측에 있어서, 광역 적합화의 일방적이고 내재적인 선호보다는 공유 배경을 비롯한 맥락적 요소를 좀 더 우위에 있는 기제로 보는 것이 타당함을 제안하였다. 본 논문은 위와 같이, 전제에 대한 논의들을 초기의 이론부터 최근의 논의까지 총괄적으로 고찰하면서 전제 연구의 전체적인 흐름을 일목요연하게 정리하고자 하였다. 뿐만 아니라, 상당히 맥락 의존적인 성격을 띠고 있는 전제에 대한 연구는 이후, 공유 배경에 초점을 둔 적합화를 핵심 기제로 삼아 진행되어야 함을 보이고자 하였다. 맥락적 요소와 적합화의 관계, 또 이들이 전제의 분석에 미치는 영향에 대한 좀 더 심도 있는 논의를 비롯해, 다양한 유발자와 맥락의 작용을 체계적으로 규명하는 연구가 지속적으로 이루어져야 하겠다.
