퀼팅(Quilting) 기법에 의한 패션디자인 개발

Abstract

본 연구는 패션 디자인의 기법 중에 하나인 퀼팅(quilting: 누비)의 기법과 퀼팅의 복식사적 사례를 이해하고 최근 10년간 해외 컬렉션을 통해 선보인 여성복식에서 퀼팅 기법의 디자인 사례를 고찰하여 퀼팅의 디자인적 의의를 정립하고 퀼팅 기법에 의한 새로운 소재 개발과 의상 디자인을 창작하는데 목적이 있다. 연구방법은 문헌자료와 패션잡지, 인터넷 등의 기사 및 시각자료를 중심으로 퀼팅의 개념과 복식사에 나타난 퀼팅 기법을 고찰하고 최근 10년간의 여성복식의 퀼팅 디자인 사례를 수집 연구하였다. 위의 연구를 토대로 퀼팅 기법을 주제로 한 패션 소재 개발과 의상을 기획, 디자인하여 실물로 제시하였다. 퀼팅의 개념 및 특성은 표면의 안쪽에 패딩하여 그 위를 바느질함으로써 두께감이 겉으로 드러나는 볼륨형의 입체감을 특징으로 하는 봉제기법이자 장식기법이다. 이러한 볼륨형의 입체감은 평면적인 소재에 요철감을 부여하여 원래의 소재가 가지고 있던 느낌과는 전혀 다른 텍스처를 갖게 해준다. 또한, 퀼팅은 바느질하여 생기는 선(line)의 표현이다. 퀼팅선에 의한 무늬는 기능적 역할 수행에 따라 부가적으로 생성된 것이지만 의복의 일부로 바느질되어 의복의 표면형태를 더욱 아름답게 하고 미적효과를 증대시키는 중요한 장식적 요소가 된다. 서양복식에서 퀼팅의 복식사적 사례는 무장복(武裝服)의 일종이었던 푸르푸앵이 퀼팅에 의한 대표적인 의복이었으며 보디스, 페티코트, 코르셋에 장식된 퀼팅의 예도 풍부하였다. 퀼팅의 종류는 입체감을 표현하는 기법에 따라 와드 퀼팅, 스터프 퀼팅, 코드 퀼팅으로 분류되며 손으로 작업하는 핸드 퀼팅과 재봉틀을 이용하는 머신 퀼팅이 있다. 최근 10년간 해외 컬렉션에 발표된 여성복식을 살펴본 결과 퀼팅은 여러 가지 무늬를 표현하며 장식적 기법을 위주로 사용되었다. 그리고 퀼팅 스티치 라인의 특성상 직선을 사용한 기하학무늬가 많았다. 퀼팅 줄무늬는 직선, 곡선, 파상선, 지그재그선 등으로 구성되며 선 고유의 특성을 전달할 뿐만 아니라 퀼팅의 입체적 표면 창출에 의해 선이 부각되어 줄무늬가 전달하는 시각적 효과와 함께 더욱 강하게 하였다. 서로 교차하는 퀼팅 선에 의한 체크무늬는 직물 전체에 사용되는 예가 많았으며, 특히 플레인(plain)한 가죽 소재, 광택 소재와 함께 새로운 텍스처를 보여 주었다. 동·식물무늬의 퀼팅은 무늬의 모티프가 가진 고유한 이미지를 전달하였다. 추상무늬의 퀼팅은 직선과 곡선 등을 불규칙하고 자유롭게 배열 구성하여 평면적 소재에 요철형의 입체감을 현대적으로 표현하였다. 퀼팅 기법은 천을 보강하고 부피감을 부여하는 기능적 역할 이외에도 기존 소재의 텍스처를 새롭게 하고 무늬의 표현을 통해 장식효과를 높인다. 나아가 이처럼 의복의 요소로만 사용되는 것이 아니라 퀼팅 기법의 특성에 근거한 다양한 테크닉의 개발은 새로운 감성의 개성적인 소재를 디자인하는 데 훌륭한 방안이 됨을 발견하였다. 이상의 연구 결과를 중심으로 퀼팅 기법에 의한 소재 개발을 디자인하고 4점의 의상을 디자인하여 직접 제작하였다. 컨셉에 따른 작품명은 “Primitive Modernity", "Blood & Organic Inspiration", "Composed & Decomposed", " Striped Body Illusion"이다. 첫째, “Primitive Modernity"는 퀼팅 기법의 대표적 표면효과인 볼륨형의 입체감을 돋보이게 하기 위하여 부피감 있는 펠트 소재를 사용하고 기하학 무늬로 핸드 퀼팅하여 장식하였다. 여기에 소매와 스커트의 햄 라인에 기하학 무늬로 머신 퀼팅하여 부분장식 함으로써 전체적 형태를 부풀려 단단하게 고정하였다. 둘째, “Blood & Organic Inspiration"은 퀼팅 기법이 여러 가지 소재를 한꺼번에 맞붙여 고정하기에 용이한 점에 중점을 두고 물에 의하여 쉽게 제거되는 한지(韓紙)를 이용하여 새로운 소재를 디자인 개발하였다. 인조 털 원단 위에 한지, 펠트, 양모 털실을 퀼팅 스티치의 장력으로 고정시키고 수세과정에서 한지의 일부를 제거함으로써 한지가 함께 고정된 퀼팅선과 펠트가 부착되어 차지하는 면의 구성, 양모털실에 의한 선이 복잡하게 얽혀 추상무늬를 표현하고 인조 털의 일부가 불규칙하게 무늬의 일부분으로 돌출되면서 새로운 시각적, 촉각적 텍스처를 강조하였다. 의상의 실루엣은 소재의 표면효과와 추상무늬를 강조하기 위해 심플한 것으로 하였다. 셋째, “Composed & Decomposed"는 닥줄기의 불규칙하고 자연적인 형태를 퀼팅 무늬로 활용하여 소재를 디자인 개발하였다. 인조 털 원단 위에 손으로 펼쳐 건조시킨 닥줄기를 올려 그 모양을 따라 퀼팅하였다. 닥줄기의 추상무늬를 그대로 표현하고 부분적으로 돌출된 인조털은 불규칙한 요철감을 나타내었다. 또한 닥줄기의 빳빳한 성질은 개발한 소재에 그 특성을 그대로 전달하여 단단하고 형태의 고정을 용이하게 하였다. 이러한 소재의 특성에 맞추어 의상의 디자인은 뷔스티에와 닥줄기를 그대로 소재로 사용한 코쿤 스커트로 하였다. 넷째, " Striped Body Illusion"은 퀼팅 기법에 의해 광목과 거즈, 한지를 함께 부착하고 다시 한지의 일부를 제거하여 소재를 디자인 개발하였다. 퀼팅선에 의한 좁은 간격의 줄무늬와 더불어 수세과정에서 마찰을 한 방향으로 하여 한지를 제거함으로써 비늘모양의 무늬를 추가하였다. 의상 디자인은 심플한 실루엣의 드레스를 기하학적으로 면을 분할하고 줄무늬의 각도를 서로 달리하여 배치함으로써 소재의 줄무늬를 강조하였다. 이 결과 퀼팅에 의한 새로운 감성의 소재를 디자인하고 실물 의상으로 제작하여 퀼팅 기법이 표현할 수 있는 개성적이고 차별화된 디자인을 제시하였다.;This study is to understand the method and dressing case of quilting, which is a fashion design method, and to build the design meaning of quilting by studying the design case of quilting method through the women dressing from the recent 10 years of abroad collections. And also have purpose to develop new material through quilting method and create costume design. This study researched the meaning and method of quilting by focusing on visual materials and articles (literature document, fashion magazine, and internet) and also collected quilting design cases of women dressing of the recent 10 years. From this, the study presented actual size costume by developing, planning, and designing the fashion materials from the quilting method. The meaning and characteristic of quilting is a sewing and decoration method of showing the cubic effect of volume shape by padding the inner surface and sewing it to show the thickness of it. This cubic effect of volume shape gives uneven effect to the plane material and gives an entirely different texture to the original material. And quilting is also a expression of line made by sewing. The pattern through quilting line is produced additionally by its functional role, but when it’s sewed as a part of a costume, it becomes an important decoration factor to make the surface form of the costume more beautiful and enlarge its aesthetic effect. From the western dressing, ‘Pourpoint’, which is a kind of armament dressing, is the key costume through quilting. And quilting examples are also decorated on bodice, petticoat, and corset. For quilting types there are wadded quilting, stuffed quilting, and corded quilting according to methods of showing cubic effects and hand quilting using hands and machine quilting using sewing machines. Examining the women dressing announced from the abroad collections from the past 10 years, quilting expressed various patterns and used mainly as decoration methods. And from the characteristic of quilting stitch line, there were lots of geometry patterns using straight lines. Quilting line patterns are composed of straight line, curve line, wave line, and zigzag line. This not only delivers the unique characteristic of the line, but also emphasis the visual effect of the line pattern, which is embossed by the line from the created cubic surface of quilting. Check patterns, which is made by crossing each quilting lines, are used on the whole textile. And it also showed new texture with plain leather material and glossy material. The quilting of animals and plants pattern expressed its unique image of the pattern motive. Quilting of abstract pattern modernly expressed the cubic effect of unevenness on the plane material by irregularly and naturally arranging the straight lines and curve lines. Quilting method not only has functional role by reinforcing cloth to give bulk impression, but also has decoration effect through expression of patterns and newly make the texture of the original material. And it not only used as a factor of costume, but also discovered that development of various techniques is useful of designing unique material of new sensibility. Focusing on this result, the study designed material development from quilting method and produced 4 pieces of costume. The titles of the work are by concept as follows; “Primitive Modernity", "Blood & Organic Inspiration", "Composed & Decomposed", and " Striped Body Illusion". First, “Primitive Modernity", to show cubic effect of the volume form, which is the key surface effect of quilting method, used bulk impression felt material and for decoration hand quilted geometry pattern. And then, partial decorated the hem of the sleeve and skirt with machine quilting geometry pattern and tightly fixed the whole form. Second, “Blood & Organic Inspiration" was designed and developed from using Korean paper, which removes easily with water. It focused on the easiness of quilting method to fixing various materials in one. By fixing the Korean paper, felt, and woolen yarn on synthetic fur fabric with the tension of quilting stitch and removing parts of Korean paper during washing process, it expressed the abstract pattern of lines and facets made by woolen yarns and emphasized the new visual and tactical texture with the part of patterns projected with synthetic fur. A simple silhouette of the costume was used to emphasis the surface effect and abstract pattern of the material. Third, “Composed & Decomposed" was designed and developed by utilizing quilting pattern from the unsteady and natural form of the stem of ‘Dak’. This work quilted the figure of the stem of ‘Dak’, which was dried by putting it on synthetic fur fabric by hand. It expressed the original abstract pattern of stiff characteristic of the stem of ‘Dak’ and the partial protruded synthetic fur showed unsteady ruggedness. And the stiff characteristic of the stem of ‘Dak’ delivered the original characteristic of the developed material, so it made the fixing of the form easy. With this characteristic of form, the design of costume is cocoon form skirt using its original material of bustier and the stem of ‘Dak’. And last, “Striped Body Illusion" was designed and developed from quilting method by attaching cotton cloth, gauze, and Korean paper together and removing a part of Korean paper. Together with line patterns of narrow intervals from quilting line, this work also added imbricate pattern by removing Korean paper in friction direction from washing process. Costume design emphasized the material line pattern by geometrically dividing the facet of a simple silhouette dress and arranging the angle of line pattern differently. With this result, the study designed a new sensitive material and made actual size costume from quilting. And presented a unique and differentiated design expressed by quilting method.
