영화 <Elizabeth : The Golden Age>의 복식과 색채 상징성

Abstract

This thesis aims to examine the symbolism of color in the clothing of women, focusing on the protagonist of the movie Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007). Queen Elizabeth I is played by Catherine Blanchet in this film. This study employs rich literature encompassing the Bible (New International Version and New Korean Revised Version), and The Fairy Queen by Spencer as well as visual materials including the DVD of the Golden Age, newspapers, magazines and pictures from various websites. The movie is set in the religiously and politically chaotic period of between 1585 and 1588 in England. Yet, Queen Elizabeth’s policy that promoted colonialism, literature and art helped England reach its peak known as the Renaissance. The Queen was both a powerful monarch and also a symbol of fairness that influenced the whole of English society greatly. Inspired by the spirit of Renaissance, women of the time dressed in an exaggerated attire in an attempt to beautify the female figure. It was common to wear corsets and farthingales fastened around women’s waist and extended at a straight line from there, giving a very abrupt edge to the skirt. These features were even more conspicuous in the Queen’s clothing and are well-captured in the movie Elizabeth: The Golden Age. At the beginning of the movie, the Queen wears gowns with cartwheel ruff and wheel farthingales but with very little exposure, symbolizing the attempt of establishing a powerful majesty in the midst of political and religious instability. However, as the movie progresses, the Queen falls in love with Walter Raleigh and her clothing comes to emphasize femininity displaying her cleavage. Later on, her clothing indicates both femininity and charismatic authority as she prepares for the Spanish war. At the end of the movie, the Queen who led the the country to victory in war puts on a luxurious gown with butterfly wings that reminds of a fairy queen. The colors of the Queen’s clothing are categorized into three groups. First, the color red represents two opposite allegories. The positive image of red denotes Christ’s blood, the love of God, and noble status of the Queen’s image as a savior of England. On the other hand, red represents lewdness and evil which insinuate that the Queen is being attacked on her religious and political genuineness. Second, the color blue represents Saint Maria, chastity, and divinity. Third, the color white and gold represent the Queen’s ideals which are chastity as a virgin Queen and divinity. The thesis concludes by acknowledging the role of colors as a tool of visual communication in manifesting the protagonist’s mental state and developing story lines in movies.;본 연구는 영국의 황금시대를 연 엘리자베스 여왕(Elizabeth Ⅰ, 1535-1603)의 일대기 중 1585년에서 1588년을 배경으로 한 영화 <Elizabeth : The Golden Age(2007)>의 엘리자베스 여왕 복식과 그 색채 상징성이 시각적 커뮤니케이션을 담고 있는 영화에서 담당하는 역할을 인식하고, 나아가 극의 전개와 주인공이 처한 상황, 심리상태를 표현하는 데 있어 복식과 색채가 갖는 상징성을 연구하는 데 그 목적이 있다. 연구 방법은 영화 <Elizabeth : The Golden Age>의 DVD, 신문, 잡지, 인터넷 등의 기사 및 시각 자료와 『성서(개혁개정판·NIV)』, 『선녀여왕(Fairy Queen)』을 비롯한 여러 문헌 자료를 중심으로 당시의 배경, 영화감독 및 의상감독과 작품경향을 고찰하고 엘리자베스 여왕의 복식과 그 색채 상징성을 연구하였다. 영화의 시대적 배경이 된 1585-1588년, 엘리자베스 여왕은 혼란스러운 종교 대립 속에서도 문예활동의 장려하여 영국 르네상스를 꽃피웠고 1588년, 스페인 무적함대를 격파함으로써 영국 역사상 최고의 황금시대를 열었다. 또한 엘리자베스 여왕은 당시의 패션리더로 영국 복식을 발전시켰는데, 이 시기 여왕 복식은 파팅게일로 스커트를 과장시키고 코르셋으로 상체를 조이는 팽대 복장 가운과 화려한 디테일 장식이 조화를 이루어 웅장한 외관을 자랑하였다. 영화 속에 표현된 엘리자베스 여왕 복식은 권위적인 복식, 여성적인 복식, 호전적인 복식, 여신 이미지의 복식의 네 가지 이미지로 표출되었다. 공적인 여왕으로서의 업무를 수행할 때에 신체의 노출과 장식을 배제한 권위적인 복식으로 수레 바퀴형 러프칼라, 파팅게일 가운을 입고 V자형 머리장식을 하였다. 사적인 사랑을 나누는 장면에서는 여성적인 복식으로 노출과 장식이 많은 망사로 된 파틀렛, 소매가 달린 가운을 착용하였다. 전시상황에서는 호전적인 복식으로 갑옷을 착용하여 남성의 젠더적 역할을 수행하는 여왕의 모습을 보여주었다. 스페인전을 승리한 여왕은 여신 이미지의 복식으로 팬칼라, 버터 플라이 윙, 화려한 보석 장식의 스토마커, 휠 파팅게일, 화려한 장신구를 착용하여 여왕이 추구하던 천상의 여신 이미지를 복식을 통해 완벽하게 형상화시켰다. 영화 속 여왕 복식의 색채 상징성은 붉은색, 파란색, 흰색, 금색의 네 가지 색에서 나타났다. 붉은색 범주는 양극화된 의미를 지니고 있었다. 붉은색은 기독교적 우의에서 긍정적으로는 그리스도의 사랑, 고귀한 신분을 상징하였고 다른 한편으로는 음녀와 악마를 상징하였다. 여기서 붉은색은 긍정적으로 여왕의 구원자적 이미지와 강력한 왕권을 상징하였고 부정적으로 여왕의 출생과 종교적 정통성에 있어서의 결함을 상징하였다. 비잔틴 이래 기독교적 우의로 신성시되었던 파란색은 영국과 영국민을 위해 사적인 사랑을 포기하는 여왕의 정절을 상징하였다. 그러나 실제, 엘리자베스 여왕의 초상화에는 파란색 계열의 가운이 전무했다. 알렉산드라 번은 당시 여왕 복식의 색채와 달리 푸른색 계열을 여왕 복식에 많이 사용하였는데 이것은 파란색을 통해 정절을 지켜야 했던 처녀여왕의 고뇌를 심도 있게 다루고자 하는 의도와 더불어, 현재 영국 왕실이 윈저 블루를 즐겨 사용하는 것을 반영한 현대적 재해석으로 여겨진다. 금색은 기독교적 우의로 신의 조명(illumination)을 상징하여 여왕의 신성을 나타내었고 흰색은 예수의 영광, 무죄함을 상징하여 여왕의 처녀적 순결을 나타내었다. 또한 복식에 금색과 흰색을 함께 사용하여 금색의 신성과 흰색의 순결함이 합쳐져 여왕을 여신의 이미지로 형상화시켰다. 영화 속 여왕 복식은 시대적 고증이 밑받침된 현사회의 미의식을 함축한 재해석을 통해, 인위적이고 움직임이 없던 당시의 팽대 복식에 현대의 모더니즘이 반영되어 복식형태가 단순화되었고 인체의 지나친 축소와 과장, 과다한 장식이 배제되어 절제미를 보여 주었다. 더불어, 최근의 로맨틱 스타일의 부드러운 표현이 가미되어 부드러운 소재가 사용되었고 약간의 움직임이 있는 팽대복식으로 표현되었다.
