Abstract
Popular films can not be separated from the social reality. The issues concerning the representation of women's sexuality are mentioned in a social context as well. The fact that the discussion regarding the prostitution has been one of the most neglected among the other issues related to the women's sexuality in popular culture would also have relevance to the double standard on prostitution in the social reality. Movies concerning prostitution had been overflowing in 1970's to create the hostess genre, however, experienced a constant decrease since then, presumably influenced by the periodic situation in Korea. Meanwhile, the method of representing prostitute women in public culture was modified or maintained in relation to the ideological change in Korean society. Prostitution has always been one of the controversial issues in Korean society till today. While the sex trade had taken place under wraps and in a way, had been justified in the past, since the effectuation of the special law on the sex trade, the issues regarding the treatment of prostitute women, the illegality of the sex trade and on the other hand, the justification of trading sex as a product became the core arguments. However, in these arguments seemingly simple at first glance reside deeply rooted male-centrism, patriarchy and capitalism along with the dual point of view on women, especially prostitute women in Korean society. This study examined the way of representing prostitute women in popular films considering the change of the periodic situation in Korea and the predominant value in Korean society. Six Korean movies with the heroine being a prostitute woman produced and put on the screen from the 1970's to the 2000's were selected. The era was sectionalized into three according to the political classification of the era in Korean film history and two movies were chosen per each period. The subjects of study, "Yeon-Ja's Heydays(1975)", "Miss O's Apartment(1978)", "Prostitution(1988)", "Chang(1997)", "Bad Guy(2001)", "You Are My Sunshine(2005)" are the highly popular movies of the time with the main character playing a prostitute woman. This study was accomplished through the inquiry into the movies' plot, characteristics of the individuals, relation between the characters and the method of representation with the main focus placed on the analysis of the narrative. Furthermore, a study on the change of the representation way by each era and the ideological discourse on women related to sexuality in Korean society was conducted in a sociocultural level. According to analysis, in terms of the plot, while the movies in the 1990's treated the sex trade as a social issue, the movies from 2000 exhibited an apparent tendency to individualize. The analysis of Tzvetan Todorov's syntagmatic schema proved the plot to be essentially influenced by patriarchy and show a different equilibrium structure depending on whether it is acceptable to patriarchy or not. Loss of virginity and poverty/debt commonly appeared as inflow mechanisms. In case of the characters, female heroines were depicted as passive and the male helper stood by the prostitute woman. The bond between male helpers were described as strong, on the other hand, the bond between women was observed partly, however discouraged rather than maintained. Furthermore, the elements of binarism were found between prostitute women and general women. Women in general were portrayed as naive and simple in contrast with prostitute women as ruined and sumptuous. This binarism was also observed in the background as well. Although time and space were mostly set the same as the actual producing period, town and country symbolized different elements. Town was described as material, harsh and violent, meanwhile, country as moral and peaceful. On the other hand, concerning the image expression way of the woman's body at the discourse level, the subject women in sexual scenes were mainly filmed from a high angle to make them small and insignificant. At the same time, the frequent closeup on female body and facial expression and the relative ommission of male body prove that the movie is othering woman's body from a patriarchal viewpoint. The change of the plot according to the periodic circumstances appeared meaningful along with the classification of the era. While the movies in the stagnation period displayed a narrative structure thoroughly focused on passive female heroine, those in the conversion period partly reflected the changes in social aspects representing an comparatively active heroine. Capitalistic characteristics of the sex trade were also revealed in the narrative structure in this period. The movies in the leaping period reflected the periodic background where the individualism and capitalism were widespread. With the narrative experiencing a transition from social to rather individual and the ideology of virginity upon the inflow mechanism of the sex trade being weakened, some changes were made. The representation way of the characters varied from social victims engaged in prostitution to survive to women trading sex for personal reasons. The space of the sex trade reflected the trend from a sort of gathering place in the 1970's to the dispersion of commercial sex trading in the 1980-90's and diversified sex trade in the 2000's as mentioned in the characteristics of the sex trade in Korea analysed in the theoretical discussion of the study. Meanwhile, poverty or debt constantly kept functioning as a very important inflow mechanism of the woman to the sex trade. At the same time, money transaction was omitted or naturalized which proved the application of the capitalistic value and the reflection of the patriarchy. The natural description of the dealing sex as a medium is in collusion with the exchange of product and service to money. Sex buying men are not as precisely depicted as sex selling women exposed in the front. While the sex selling woman involved in the sex trade due to financial problems is described as acting against social value, the sex buying man is portrayed as taking part of a commercial transaction where the exchange of the money and service is natural. Moreover, while the sex trade becomes a unremovable brand to women, it stays in the range of normality for men which proves that a same act could be interpreted in a different way depending on gender. The ideology of virginity acts as a strong inflow mechanism along with the money, however, as mentioned below, tends to weaken partly in the subjects of analysis since the 2000's. In addition, the sex trade is described to generate not only the power structure between two genders but also dichotomization and hierarchization among women. Thus, the representation of prostitute women in Korean movies generally reflects the periodic situation. In terms of quantity, it is concentrated in a certain period and in terms of quality, it reflects the periodic changes such as the dispersion of individualism and capitalism throughout the plot and characters. Nonetheless, compared with the academic world and female societies where the discussion on the sex trade is actively conducted recently reflecting the situation of prostitute women, the representation way in popular movies appears to constantly express capitalism and patriarchy, the socially predominant ideologies as a whole. The fact that these movies achieved a great social success from the public indicates that movies are reproducing the ideology in a cultural point of view and that those dominant ideologies are still strongly operating in Korean society.;대중영화는 사회적 현실과 유리될 수 없다.
