마음이론 전조로서의 상호주의하기(Joint attention) 행동에 관한 연구

Abstract

본 연구는 상호주의하기 행동(joint attention behavior)이 마음이론의 전조(precursor)행동인지를 알아보기 위해 상호주의하기와 요구행동( request behavior)을 정상과 자폐, 지체 아동들을 대상으로 비교해 보았다. 본 연구는 정상 16명과 자폐 18명, 지체 17명을 대상으로 사회성 지수(SQ)를 통제한 상태에서 ESCS(Early Social Communication Scale)를 사용하여 상호주의하기와 요구행동에 대한 비교연구를 수행하였다. 자료처리는 상호주의하기와 요구행동을 측정하기 위해 SQ를 공변인(covariate)으로 하여 공변량 분석(Analysis of Covariance)을 실시하였다. 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 요구행동에서는 정상, 자폐, 지체집단간 유의미한 차이가 없었으나 상호주의하기에서는 자폐 아동이 정상, 지체아동보다 유의미하게 저조한 수행을 보였다. 이상의 연구 결과를 통해, 자폐 아동은 타인의 마음을 이해할 필요가 없고 물리적 대상에 초점이 맞추어진 요구행동에서는 상대적인 부족함을 보이지 않았으나, 타인의 마음상태(mental state)를 추론해야 하는 상호주의하기 행동에서는 정상아동 및 지체 아동과 비교하여 상대적인 열등성을 보이는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 자폐 아동이 마음의 표상적 특성을 이해하기 전 단계에서 주의를 공유하고, 자신이 흥미 있어 하는 대상과 타인에게 주의를 분산시키는데 장애를 보인다는 기존 연구결과와 일치하는 것이다. 따라서 상호주의하기는 마음이론(theory of mind)의 전조 행동이라 할 수 있다. 본 연구 결과는 자폐의 치료시 마음이론과 관련된 치료적 접근을 시도하기 전에 서로 함께 주의(attention)를 공유하고 자기가 흥미 있게 보는 것을 타인이 함께 봐주었으면 하는 상호주의하기에 대한 교육이 선행되어야 함을 시사해 준다. 따라서 자폐 아동의 치료적 접근에 있어 새로운 지침을 제공해 줄 수 있을 것이다.;This study was aimed to examine whether Joint Attention behavior is a precursor to a Theory of Mind. The subjects were 16 normal, 18 autistic and 17 retarded children to compare the development of Joint Attention behavior and Request behavior. The results of the study are as follow. There was no group difference on Request behavior. Autistic group showed the least Joint Attention behavior compared to normal and retarded groups. Moreover, there was no significant difference on Joint Attention behavior between normal and retarded groups. The results revealed that autistic children were impaired in Joint Attention behavior which requires understanding of mind, but not impaired in Request behavior which requires understanding of the physical world. The results support the previous finding that autistic children show impairment in sharing attention which is necessaring to representational to Joint Attention development may help autistic children to develop theory of mind is discussed.
