Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of transnational networks in terms of Korean students studying aborad, and to examine their politics of identities in spatial scales. The earlier studies of Korean students studying abroad focus on the fields of Educational studies and Sociology. However, the phenomenon of Korean students studying abroad is the major and traditional theme, 'migration' in geography. Therefore, the studies about Korean students studying aborad comes on its necessity in geographic perspectives. Especially, It compoes of increasing transnational ethnic networks, its effects of spatial changings and the politics of identities in multiple spatial scales. First of all, despite the transmigrants(the students and their parent) live in the new country, they continue their networks between origin country and new country. For example, they need many networks when they prepare their educational migration and the period of being taught. This network institutions are linked to each other in local scales. By analyzing Dong-A newspaper, this transnational movement Korean students studying abroad is the phenomenon as translocality. This regions are concentrated in Kangnam area in Korea and East area especially FairFax, Newsersy states and so on in United States. This shows that transnationalism fosters in specific local scale. Therefore transnationalism and globalization is not the phenomenons that decrease the meaning of space. It creates the new process of "localization". Also, as the subjectivity of the diaspora, students and their parents experience identities problems such as gender, ethnic, social class in daily lives. Through the in-depth interview, the researcher explores their identities. For instance, many students and their family strive to raise or maintain to their social class so that their social class identities have hierachies in spite of same Korean group. Moreover, the main purpose of the studying aborad is to obtain the skills of English and to be a person who has a global lifestyle. However, most early Korean studying abroad students keep their ethnic identity as "Korean", and changes situations and their enviornments like "US citizen" . This refers to the "flexible identity".
