영화 <Chicago>의 복식과 색채 이미지 연구

Abstract

본 연구는 밥 포스의 브로드웨이 뮤지컬[Chicago(1975)]를 영상화한 영화 [Chicago(2002)]를 통해서, 영화 두 여자주인공 Roxie Hart(록시 하트)와 Velma Kelly(벨마 켈리)의 복식과 색채 이미지를 연구하는 데 그 목적이 있다. 연구 방법은 영화 [Chicago]의 DVD와 국내외 문헌자료, 신문, 잡지, 인터넷 등의 기사 및 시각자료를 중심으로 두 여주인공의 복식과 색채 이미지, 그리고 영화 속 배경에 표현된 색채 상징성을 고찰하였다. 영화 [Chicago]의 시대적 배경이 된 1920년대 당시의 미국은 제1차 세계대전 후 호경기를 맞아 젊은 세대의 생활양식에 많은 영향을 미쳤다. 특히, 자유를 표현하는 재즈 열풍으로 당시의 미국을 ‘재즈시대(Jazz Age)’라고 불렀다. 복식에 있어서는, 여성이 사회에 진출함에 따라 패션의 주요대상이 젊은 세대로 바뀌면서 튜블러(tubular) 실루엣의 보이시 스타일(boyish style)이 1920년대의 대표적인 스타일이었다. 등장인물에 표현된 복식과 색채 이미지를 살펴보면, Roxie Hart는 스트레이트 실루엣의 슬립과 나이트 가운을 입고 있다. 이 의상은 Roxie의 순진하고 나약한 이미지와 평범한 현실을 표현하기 위해서 피부색과 비슷한 파스텔 톤의 색채로 나타냈다. 반면, 환상 속에서의 슬릿이 있는 화려한 분홍색 새틴 롱 드레스는 무능력한 남편과 평범한 일상에서 벗어나고 싶은 그녀의 욕망을 표출했다. 한편, 감옥에서 어두운 회색 죄수복 대신 스트레이트 실루엣의 꽃무늬가 있는 밝은 색상의 가운을 통해 대중의 관심을 받는 록시를 나타냈다. 그리고 유명스타에 대한 욕망과 자기도취에 빠진 Roxie를 가슴이 깊이 파인 짧고 화려한 은색 비즈 드레스로 나타냈다. 진실을 숨기고 여론의 동정을 사기 위해서는 로 웨이스트라인의 플레어스커트인 파란색 원피스 드레스와 흰색 칼라가 있는 얇고 비치는 소재의 검은색 의상을 입었다. 마지막으로 스타가 된 Roxie의 비즈, 프린징 드레스는 그녀의 찰랑거리는 움직임과 율동미를 나타냈으며, 흰색을 통해 그녀의 성공과 삶의 기쁨을 표출했다. 이와 같이, 그녀의 의상은 1920년대 복식을 개성적으로 댄디하고 에로틱한 현대적 감각과 결합하여 잘 표현하였는데, 가슴과 힙을 강조하지 않은 소년 같은 여성미를 표현한 로 웨이스트라인의 원피스 드레스와 짧은 비즈드레스로 록시를 표현했다. Velma Kelly의 복식은 가슴과 등, 다리를 많이 노출시켜 그녀의 관능미를 나타냈고, 비즈, 프린징 장식의 드레스로 율동미를 표현했다. 특히, 검은색 의상과 시스루 소재의 장갑, 스타킹, 검은 쇼트 컷, 짙은 화장은 그녀의 강하고 관능적인 이미지를 부각시켰다. 또한, 노출이 많은 검은색 바디슈트를 통해 그녀의 에로틱한 이미지와 분노와 증오를 표현하였고, 빨간색 소맷부리와 깃이 있는 검은색 시스루 소재의 가운은 그녀의 도도한 이미지를 극대화시켰다. 한편, Velma의 프린징 드레스는 빨간색과 파란색의 대비를 통하여, 스타로서 재기에 대한 열정과 대중의 기억에서 잊혀져가는 것에 대한 절망감을 표현했다. 이처럼, Velma의 의상은 1920년대 복식에 관능적인 검은색 보디 컨셔스의 페티시 패션으로 현대적 감각을 결합하여 나타났다. 영화 속 배경의 색채 상징성을 보면, 검은색과 빨간색 배경의 ‘Cell Block Tango(독방의 탱고)’ 공연 장면을 통해서 Velma의 살인과 증오, 분노, 공격적인 성격을 표현했다. 또한, 빨간색과 파란색 배경의 Velma의 ‘The Desperation(절망의 공연)’ 장면은 스타에 대한 욕망과 동시에 절망과 우울함을 나타냈다. 반면, 자기도취에 빠진 Roxie의 독무대 ‘Roxie’ 장면에서 검은색의 배경은 그녀를 집중시켜 그녀의 과시적인 이미지를 표출했다. 그러나 또 다른 검은색 배경의 작별 무대는 Roxie의 스타에 대한 좌절과 기쁨이 사라진 암울한 현실의 공간으로 표현되었다. 마지막으로, Roxie와 Velma가 듀엣 공연을 펼치는 무대에서 노란색의 배경은 살인을 저지르고도 석방되어 대중의 사랑을 받게 되는 행운과 삶에 대한 기쁨, 성공, 화려함을 나타냈다. 본 연구에서는, 영화 속에서 표현된 주인공의 복식과 그 색채 이미지가 시각적 요소로서 큰 상징효과를 가진다는 것을 인식하고, 나아가 영화의 주제와 등장인물의 이미지 전달에 다양한 색채의 상징효과로 표현되는 복식과 그 이미지에 관한 연구가 더욱더 요구되어야 할 것이다.;The purpose of this study is to study costumes and color images in Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly through the movie <Chicago>(2002) which screened the musical <Chicago>(1975). For the method of this study, it was examined images of Roxie and Velma based on the film <Chicago>. Also, it was considered symbolic color images expressed in costumes of characters and backgrounds on the basis of articles and photos in DVD, newspapers, magazines, and internet of the film <Chicago>. First, regarding the costumes and color images in characters, Roxie’s straight silhouette slip in skin tone reflected her frailty and monotonous routines in reality. On the other hand, a white beaded, fringed evening dress showed her fame-hungry and self-absorption in fantasy. Also, a short knee-length and low waistline with a pleated skirt blue dress and a see-through black dress with a white collar were to disguise her guilt and draw sympathy to win a suitcase. These straight boyish style dresses properly expressed the flapper fashion of 1920s that gave women freedom of rapid movement. Aiming to express Velma's images, her fearlessness, strongness and sexual attraction were expressed by revealing legs and arms in shapes and see-through clothes in black. Also, contrasting colors of red and blue body-suit style fringed dresses conveyed her sensual attraction, aggressiveness, desire, and desperation. Plus, her surplice style fur coat and cloche were popular in 1920s. On the ending of duet performance of Roxie and Velma, their white short beaded, fringed evening dresses swished and swayed, accentuating the frenzied jazz beat. Second, these images were reinforced by color images in the backgrounds in the film. On the scene of Velma’s ‘Cell Block Tango’, black and red background showed her strong character. Contrasting colors of the red and blue on the background expressed Velma’s desire and despair in her act of ‘The Desperation’. As for contrary images of black backgrounds on Roxie’s stages, they represented her self-absorption and frustration of failing to attract public attention. On the ending of duet performance of Roxie and Velma, the yellow background expressed success and joy in life. Based on the above results, a visual impact by using proper colors in costumes established heroines' characters rather than by their lines or clothes' shapes. Like this, color carries weight in the film industry that visually gives the audience a large perception of who a character is. Therefore, it is thought to be important to conduct following studies on costumes and color images that help to create and define main characters and themes through the costumes for films.
