Abstract
This study is about the treasure pattern(寶紋) expressed on the textiles during Joseon Period(朝鮮時代) in Korea and Ming?Qing Period(明?淸代) in China. The treasure pattern originated from China, was used as auspicious motifs. It can be divided into the Eight Buddist Symbols(八吉祥紋), the Eight Taoist Symbols(暗八仙紋) and the Treasure Pattern(雜寶紋). It has been used as religious meanings from Buddism and Taoism. It has progressively possessed religious meanings as well as general good-luck symbols and wishes for longevity in China and Korea. It’s not certain that when the treasure pattern was introduced to Korea. However it is presumed that it was introduced during the era of the Three Kingdoms(三國時代), when Buddhism was introduced. Taoism based on pure idea and was developed with the Yin(陰) and Yang(陽) ideology was presumed to have been introduced in Korea during the times of King Youngryu(營留王) in Goguryeo(高句麗) period. The treasure pattern was first used on textiles at the Tang(唐) dynasty in China, and Goryeo(高麗) dynasty in Korea. In Joseon Period, the Treasure Pattern(雜寶紋) was represented the union of a married couple and the prosperity of generation due to the influence of Confucianism. The treasure pattern(寶紋) on the textiles during the Joseon Period was appeared with the plant(植物) or cloud(雲) pattern on the single color damask, showing a elegant style. The treasure pattern presented with gold-leaf imprint, gold supplementary wefts and couched gold threads was found at Wonsam(圓衫), Dang-ui(唐衣) and ceremonial skirts of royal women. The treasure pattern dyed on Dangchae-Bojagi(唐彩褓: wrapping cloth) was used to draw pictures and expressed in the most realistic and specific way. The pattern in Hwalot, Hyung-Bae(胸背) and living goods showed the beauty of Korean embroidery by using gold threads. The treasure pattern in the Ming and Qing Period was different from the damask(暗花紋) in Korea. It was expressed in diverse colors, and has added more general good-luck symbols by adding colors and patterns. The treasure pattern used on the left and right marbles of the Lantern(燈籠) pattern showed the desires for pleasure and happiness. The treasure pattern of embroidery was freely expressed just like a piece of art, and it showed brilliancy by using gold threads at outlines. In China's Hyung-Bae(胸背), the Eight Buddist Symbols(八吉祥紋) and the Eight Taoist Symbols(暗八仙紋) except for the Treasure Pattern(雜寶紋) were diversely used implyed the religious meanings and auspicious motifs. According to the result of the analysis based on textiles remains (eighty six Korean pieces and eighty Chinese pieces), treasure patterns expressed with plant or auspicious patterns were favored in Korea. But treasure patterns represented with animal or auspicious patterns were favored in China. Although detailed compositions were different, treasure patterns of mixture types(複合形) were more frequent than single types(單獨形) in both countries. And in terms of arrangement, full types(充塡形) in Korea and painting types(繪畵形) in China are more frequent. Each kind of treasure patterns were used at different frequency in both countries. In Korea, the solely presented Treasure Pattern(雜寶紋) was highly used. While the Eight Buddist Symbols(八吉祥紋), the Eight Taoist Symbols(暗八仙紋) and the Treasure Pattern(雜寶紋) were rarely mixed together. On the other hand, the Eight Buddist Symbols(八吉祥紋) and the Eight Taoist Symbols(暗八仙紋) as well as the solely presented Treasure Pattern(雜寶紋) were highly used in China, so it was easier to understand the formative beauty of the Eight Buddist Symbols and the Eight Taoist Symbols. Although the treasure pattern was appeared on the textiles in Korea and China, the pattern was developed as own creative characteristics, technique, and profound beauty under the influence of each culture. Through the future research for finding features of treasure pattern in Japan, Vietnam, and other countries, it is expected to make an opportunity to introduce the oriental culture to the whole world rightly.
