Carl Orff의＜Carmina burana＞연구

Abstract

Carl Orff(1895∼1982) was a composer and educator who represented the 20th century German music. Although his music belongs to the contemporary music in terms of period, its characteristics are quite different from those of the contemporary music. It is very simple, but it features dramatically vital elements. Unlike the Romanticism music with its harmony centered about melodies, his music uses the rhythms primarily. And Orff uses the most fundamental elements of music, repeating the themes insistently, while showing some clear formal composition except the counterpoint to render a clean and firm feeling. In addition, he uses percussions much within the orchestra, probably because he emphasizes the rhythmic elements. Carl Orff completed his life-long master piece 「Carmina burana」 in 1936. 24 pieces borrowed from the poems and songs sung by vagabond scholars or monks during the medieval age were added to his own poems for this piece. Thus, it features moral parody, spring, love, drink, gamble and religion. This piece uses very charming and simple materials, highlighting the roles of percussions and repeating rhythms and melodies continuously. It has a form of poem rather than music, while its harmonies are composed very simply. Carl Orff's unique form established in 「Carmina burana」 would provide for a reference for his later works, while being positioned as a genre of new stage music in the diverse contemporary music genres. In general, 「Carmina burana」 is widely known as chorus. However, only 11 parts of the total 25 ones are choruses, and the rest 14 parts consist of vocal solos, vocal ensembles, choruses mixed with vocal solos and dance songs. And the accompaniment is not a simple piano accompaniment but the orchestras using large-scale percussions. In all, the roles of percussions are very important for this piece. This study finds that not only the choruses but also the vocal solos are important parts of this piece, and further play some essential roles for it. The master piece sampled from 「Carmina burana」 disc for this study was produced by Universal Music and conducted by Andre Previn to be recorded. This study reviews Carl Orff's life and characteristics of his music as well as the historical background and examines his 「Carmina burana」 focusing on the vocal parts.;칼 오르프(Carl Orff, 1985∼1982)는 20세기의 독일을 대표하는 작곡가이자 교육자이다. 그의 음악은 시기적으로는 현대음악의 범위 안에 속하지만 음악의 특징에 있어서는 현대 음악과는 전혀 다른 양상을 보이고 있다. 그것은 아주 단순하지만 매우 생동감 넘치는 요소들을 가지고 있으며, 선율이 강조되는 낭만파 음악과는 다르게 리듬이 중심적이라고 할 수 있다. 그리고 그는 음악의 가장 기본적인 요소들만을 구사하면서, 주제가 되는 소재를 고집스럽게 반복해 주는 동시에, 대위법을 배제한 뚜렷한 형식적 구성을 취하여서 명확하고 확실한 느낌을 주고 있다. 또한 리듬적인 요소를 중요하게 생각했던 만큼 오케스트라 안에서 타악기를 많이 활용하고 있기도 하다. 칼 오르프는 1936년에 「Carmina burana」라는 그의 일생의 대작을 완성하게 되는데, 이것은 중세시대의 유랑 학자들이나 승려들이 부른 시가집 중에서 가져온 24곡에 자신의 자작시를 더해서 작곡한 것으로 도덕적 풍자, 봄, 사랑, 술, 내기, 종교에 대한 내용들을 주로 가지고 있다. 이 작품은 아주 매력적이면서도 단순한 재료들을 사용하고 있으며, 타악기에 매우 중요한 역할을 주고 있고, 같은 리듬과 멜로디를 계속적으로 반복하며, 음악보다는 시에 따른 형식을 가지면서, 화성 또한 아주 간결하게 구성되어 있는 특징을 가진다. 「Carmina burana」에서 확립된 칼 오르프만의 독자적인 양식은, 그가 그 후에 작곡한 모든 다른 작품들의 기준이 되었으며, 또한 다양하게 표현되는 현대 음악들 중 새로운 무대 음악의 한 형식으로 자리 잡게 되었다. 일반적으로 「Carmina burana」는 합창곡이라고 널리 알려져 있다. 하지만 이 작품의 총 25곡 중 11곡만이 순수 합창곡일 뿐이고, 절반 이상이라고 할 수 있는 나머지 14곡은 성악 독창곡, 중창곡, 성악 독창이 있는 합창곡, 무용곡 등으로 구성되어 있다. 또한 반주도 단순한 피아노 반주가 아닌 대규모의 타악기들을 동원한 오케스트라가 담당하고 있으며, 이 타악기들의 역할이 아주 크다. 이 논문에서는, 합창뿐만이 아니라 성악 독창곡들 역시 이 작품의 중요한 부분을 차지하고 있으며, 오히려 없어서는 안 될 필수적인 역할을 하고 있다는 것을 밝히려 한다. 논문에 사용된 번역은, Universal Music에서 제작하고 지휘자 Andre Previn에 의해 실황 녹음된 「Carmina burana」음반에서 발췌하였고, 논문의 구성은 칼 오르프가 살던 시대적 배경을 비롯한 그의 생애와 음악적 특징, 그리고 「Carmina burana」중의 성악곡들의 중점적인 연구로 이루어졌다.
