Johannes Brahms의 「R. Schumann주제에 의한 변주곡 Op.9」에 대한 분석

Abstract

본 논문은 브람스(Johannes Brahms 1833-1897)의「슈만(R. Schumann 1810-1856) 주제에 의한 변주곡 Op. 9」에 대한 곡의 배경과 악곡분석에 관한 연구이다. 19세기 낭만시대에는 형식을 강조했던 고전주의와는 다르게 인간 감정의 자유로운 표현을 더 중요시 여겼다. 그러나 이러한 시대적 흐름에도 불구하고 브람스는 `낭만주의의 절대적 작곡가’로 불리며 고전주의의 절대음악을 기초로 한 그만의 독특한 음악세계를 구축하였다. 브람스의 이러한 고전주의적 음악특징은 그의 모든 장르에서 찾아 볼 수 있으며 특히 피아노 작품에서 잘 보여지고 있다. 브람스는 여러 음악형식 중 변주곡을 통해 그의 음악적 특성을 전개하였고, 그의 변주곡은 고전적 기법에 기초한 자유로운 변주인 낭만적 성격변주이다. 이러한 변주곡들은 슈만(Robert Schumann, 1810-1856)의 낭만적 요소와 함께 바흐(Johann Sebastian Bach 1685-1750)의 다성적 요소, 베토벤(Ludwig van Beethoven 1770-1827)의 고전적인 형식들로부터 영향을 받았음을 잘 나타내 주고 있다. 그의 피아노를 위한 변주곡 중 클라라 슈만(Clara Schumann, 1819-1896)에게 헌정된 「슈만 주제에 의한 변주곡 Op. 9」는 1854년에 작곡된 그의 초기 변주곡이다. 이 곡은 바로 전 해에 클라라가 사용한 바 있는 슈만의 「Bunte Blatter Op. 99」중 「Album Blatter」의 제1곡을 그대로 사용한 주제와 16개의 변주로 구성되어 있다. 브람스는 라인 강에 투신한 슈만으로 인해 상심한 클라라를 위로하기 위해 이 곡을 작곡했고 이 작품에는 슈만에 대한 브람스의 존경과 클라라를 위한 깊은 마음이 담겨 있다. 이 곡의 각 변주들은 주제를 장식만으로 드러내는가 하면 성격변주의 특징을 나타내며 주제 선이 희미한 변주도 있고, 제9변주처럼 슈만의 원곡을 인용하기도 한 변주도 있다. 또한 각 변주들은 대위법적인 요소, 8도 10도의 넓은 음정, 싱코페이션 리듬, 악센트, 스타카토, 아르페지오, 지속음 등과 같은 브람스의 작곡 기법을 포함하고 있다. 또한 이 작품에서 브람스는 10개의 변주를 ‘Brahms’변주 와 ‘Kreisler’변주로 표시하였다. 이것은 대부분 느리고 서정적 선율을 가진 ‘Brahms’변주와 빠른 템포의 슈만적 장식음이 특징인 ‘Kreisler’변주로 나누어 대조되는 두 가지 성격을 보여 주고 있다. 이러한 특징들로 볼 때, 브람스의「슈만 주제에 의한 변주곡 Op. 9」는 바로크적 엄격함에 주제를 보다 자유롭게 전개한 전환기적 성격변주의 대표적인 예라 할 수 있다.;The purpose of this study was to analyze the background and contents of Johannes Brahms' (1833-1897) "Variation Op. 9 by R. Schumann's (1810-1856) Theme". Unlike the Classicism emphasizing forms, the Romanticism which emerged in the 19th century put more emphasis on free expression of human emotion. Despite such a historical current, however, Brahms attempted to construct his own unique world of music based on the absolute music of Classicism, being called 'an absolute composer of Romanticism.' Such Classicism attributes of his can be found in every genre of his music, particularly in his piano works. Among various music forms, Brahms used the variation to demonstrate the characteristics of his music, and his variations are Romantic ones free but based on Classical techniques. His variations are known to have been influenced much by Schumann's Romantic elements, Bach's (1685~1750) polyphonic elements and Beethoven's (1770~1827) Classical forms. Among his piano variations, "Variation Op. 9 by Schumann's theme" devoted to Clara Schumann (1819-1896) is one of his earlier variations composed in 1854. This work consists of the first piece of "Album Blatter", a theme out of Schumann's "Bunte Blatter Op. 99" which Clara had used and 16 variations. Brahms composed this work in order to console Clara who was much depressed for his husband Schumann's suicide falling into Rein River, and therefore, this work contains Brahm's respect of Schumann and affection of Clara. Variations of this work reveal a theme only as decoration, or show a characteristic variation with its theme line dim or quote Schumann's original piece (9th variation). In addition, the variations feature composer's unique techniques such as counterpoint elements, intervals as wide as one octave or 10th, syncopation rhythm, accent, staccato, arpeggio, pedal point, etc. Furthermore, Brahms indicated 10 variations as 'Brahms' or 'Kreisler' various. Namely, this work features two contrasting characteristics; one is Brahms' variation slow with lyrical melodies and the other is Kreisler variation charactered by Schumann's quick tempo and decorative notes. All in all, Brahms' "Variation Op. 9 by Schumann's Theme" may well represent the transitional characteristic variations unfolding the themes freely but keeping the stern Baroque style.
