Dominick Argento의 연가곡「From the Diary of Virginia Woolf」의 연주자적 분석 연구

Abstract

Argento is one of the most representative figures in contemporary American composition, and his lied and operas are particularly well-known. Almost all of his works are being performed in regular basis. The profile of his works consists of 14 operas, choruses and 10 song cycles. The objective of this study is to analyze Dominick Argento's (1927~) song cycle,「From the Diary of Virginia Woolf」, from the performer's perspective. For this purpose, the characteristics of Argento's music are closely examined. The ways in which such characteristics are expressed in the subject work are carefully reviwed. It is indeed the researcher's hope and intention to help performers better understand the work and perform it more effectively. The secondary purpose of this study is to present Argento as one of the most significant composers in contemporary American art song genre, although he is yet to obtain the deserved recognition in Korea. This study focuses on his song cycle, 「From the Diary of Virginia Woolf」(1974). This song cycle was composed for the renowned British mezzo-soprano Janet Baker in 1974, and honored by Pulitzer Award the following year, which made him one of the internationally reputed lied composers. Since the piece is based on British novelist Virginia Woolf's (1882~1941) diary, its style shows a remarkable degree of freedom. Above all, linguistic nuances, poetic expressions and descriptions inherent in the writing are much highlighted; thus, the piece is reputed highly for values of both its literature and music. This study first features the life of the composer, Argento, and summarizes the general characteristics of his lied music. The background for this particular composition, the historical circumstances in which Woolf lived, and her family background are explored. Strucutre, harmony, accompaniment, and musical expression of the words of「From the Diary of Virginia Woolf」are analyzed along with the score examples. The last part concludes the study with comprehensive remarks about the subject work.;Dominick Argento(1927~)는 현존하는 미국의 현대 작곡가 중 대표적인 인물 중 한 사람으로, 특히 가곡과 오페라가 널리 알려져 있으며 현재에도 모든 작품들이 정기적으로 연주되고 있다. 그의 작품에는 14개의 오페라, 합창곡, 그리고 10개의 연가곡을 통해 발표된 가곡과 많은 부수음악이 있다. 본 논문은 Argento의 대표적 가곡집 중 하나인「From the Diary of Virginia Woolf (버지니아 울프의 일기)」(1974)를 연주자의 관점으로 분석, 연구한 논문이다. 연구의 목적은 우리나라에 잘 알려지지 않은 Argento의 작품을 연구함으로서, Argento의 음악적 특징을 살펴보고 이러한 특징들이 작품 속에 어떠한 방법으로 표현되었는지 알아보는 것이다. 또한 이 작품을 이해하고 연주하는 데에 도움을 주는 것이며, 더 나아가 Argento가 현대 미국 예술가곡 역사의 중요한 작곡가임을 소개하고자 함이다. 연가곡「From the Diary of Virginia Woolf」는 1974년 유명한 메조소프라노 Janet Baker를 위해 작곡하였고, 1975년 Pulitzer상을 수상함으로서 음악성을 인정받아 국제적으로 가곡 작곡가의 명성을 얻게 되었다. 영국의 소설가인 Virginia Woolf(1882~1941)의 일기를 선택하여 쓴 가곡이기 때문에 자유스러운 형식을 갖추고 있고, 무엇보다 시가 갖는 언어적 뉘앙스와 시적인 표현, 묘사에 많은 중점을 두어 음악적으로나 문학적으로 뛰어난 면모를 보여주는 작품이다. 본 논문의 구성은 다음과 같다. 우선 Argento의 생애와 그의 가곡에서 일반적으로 나타나는 음악적인 경향을 개괄하였다. 본론에서는 이 가곡이 어떻게 이루어졌는지에 대한 작곡 배경과 Woolf를 이해하기 위하여 시대적 상황과 가정환경을 알아본 후,「From the Diary of Virginia Woolf」의 분석을 통해 곡의 형식, 화성, 반주 형태, 시의 음악적 표현 등을 악보 예와 더불어 연구하였다. 결론에서는 연구한 내용을 정리하여 이 작품에 대한 총체적인 설명으로 논문을 마무리 하였다.
