Abstract

20세기는 화성과 형식의 급격한 변화와 함께 다양한 음악사조들이 공존하는 시기이다. 20세기 초 1·2차 세계대전과 세계 대 공황을 겪으면서 사회는 혼란을 겪게 되고, 음악은 이에 큰 영향을 받아 과감한 음악적 양식과 어법을 실험하게 된다. 이러한 현상들은 유럽을 중심으로 나타나는 동시에, 각 나라마다 민족적인 특성을 기반으로 독자적인 양식을 구축해 나가기 시작한다. 대표적인 작곡가로는 헝가리·루마니아·유고슬라비아의 민속선율을 모아 모음집으로 출판한 Bela Bartok(1992-1945), 러시아의 민족적 특성을 작품에 반영한 Sergey Prokofiev(1891-1953), Dimitri Shostakovich(1906-1975)등이 있다. 이러한 경향은 미국 작곡가들에게도 영향을 끼치게 되는데, 그 중 Aaron Copland(1900-1990)는 20세기 유럽의 다양한 음악적 양식과 미국의 민족적 특색을 통합시킨 대표적인 작곡가이다.A.Copland의 피아노 곡 Piano Variations(1930)는 전통적인 양식을 기반으로 20세기의 새로운 음악적 어법을 조화시킨 곡이다. Piano Variations는 Aaron Copland의 미국적 배경, Nadia Boulager에게 받았던 훈련, 제2 빈악파 로부터 받은 영향의 결정체로 볼 수 있다. Piano Variations는 매우 계획적이며 치밀하게 작곡된 곡으로, 주제와 20개의 변주 그리고 코다로 구성된다. 곡 전반을 지배하고 있는 주제는 E-C-D#-C# 네 개의 주요 4음을 기본으로 구성되어 있으며, 이후 모든 변주에서 확장되고 재구성된다. 네 개의 동기음은 각각의 변주에서 새로운 악상 및 템포와 함께 다양하게 변주, 제시되면서 전체적으로 통일감을 주게 된다. 이 곡은 선율 위주로 변주되는 1부와 리듬위주로 변주되는 2부 그리고 마지막 코다로 구성되어 있다. 본 논문에서는 Aaron Copland의 Piano Variations의 형식인 변주곡 형식과 분석을 통해 나타나는 20세기의 새로운 음악어법을 연구해 보고자 한다.;This paper seeks to trace the diverse musical influences of the early twentieth century and to identify the unique characteristics of compositions by Aaron Copland through analyzing the traditional forms and modern musical expressions in Aaron Copland's Piano Variations(1930). The twentieth century has been a time of diverse musical trends including drastic change in musical harmonies and forms. In the beginning of the twentieth century, the First and Second World Wars caused confusion and fear in society. Music was also influenced by this period, which is reflected in the bold attempts and expressions of early twentieth century composers. At the same time as this was happening in Europe, other countries were developing their own unique styles based on each region's characteristics. Some significant composers are Bela Bartok(1992-1945), Russia's Serge Prokofiev(1891-1953) and Dimitri Shostakovich(1906-1975), who published a collection based on local Hungarian, Rumanian, and Yugoslavian melodies. These composers also influenced American writers. One of these composers, who met these diverse musical forms in Europe and combined them with a unique American flavor was Aaron Copland(1900-1990). Copland brought together the European forms of the early twentieth century with his interest in jazz to begin building a unique American style. These overall musical characteristics appear in Piano Variation(1930), in which Copland harmonizes new expressions with traditional forms. Piano Variation(1930) resulted from Aaron Copland's American background, training from Nadia Boulager, and influence from the Second School of Vienna. Piano Variation(1930) is composed of twenty variations on the theme in a very logical manner. Copland begins the composition with a clear, four-note theme of E-C-D#-C# and expands each variation from this base. With each variation he adapts the four motive notes while adding new motifs and tempos to create a unified piece. The work is divided characteristically into two parts with a coda. The first part focuses on melodic variations while the second part highlights rhythmic variations before heading to the coda.
