Abstract
The aim of this thesis is to look at the overall trends of women's history and to suggest a direction for studying women's history. Therefore, this thesis focuses on the more substantial research achievements of medieval women's history systematically. Since the 1960's, the discipline of history, recognizing the need for women's history through feminist movements, has presented diverse academic theories and some substantial studies have been accumulated. The intellectual anarchy, however, is serious because a lot of new research trends have emerged and interacted with each other very rapidly. Accordingly, this thesis classified the researches of women's history into three subjects and examined the progress of the research achievements. First, some historians examined particular women's activities and achievements to inspect women's life in the past. In the beginning, research about experiences of women like Jean of Arc and Eleanor of Aquitaine was prominent. Afterwards, however, feminine figures like Hildegard von Bingen who had experiences in ways distinct from men of their field became important themes of research. In addition, this type of research, accepting all process of life including the conquest of crises and experience of frustrations as women's experiences, resulted in throwing a light upon women like Brunhild and Balthild who previously were not generally known. Next, other historians considered women's history not as stories of the individual woman but as stories of whole groups of women. In the beginning, by examining discrimination that medieval women had to go through from the feminists' view, historical research criticized sexual discrimination in the contemporary world and the patriarchal social system and argued for equality. Other researches groups of women were considered to have been influenced by general social changes. In these researches, historians examined women's status together with changes of social structures and institutions. Afterwards, however, the researches which generalized all women's status were criticized. Therefore, individual women within the same age or social status groups were treated more as differentiated beings with individual surroundings and circumstances. Finally, there are researches of women's history based on the concept of gender. Established researches of women's history have been converged to the view of gender, which means roles allotted to sexes that are formed socially and culturally. Especially, researches on gender emphasized that women have participated in history through particular experiences of their own. Therefore, the new research of gender not only synthesizes and expands established researches based on women's experiences and status, but also becomes a point of departure of women's history to become integrated within human history. This thesis is a research needed for women's history to become the basis of understanding human history. Also, this thesis is an essential research to include women's history in history education. Through this thesis, I wish to provide a momentum for understanding human history more perfectly by the inclusion of women's history, and for describing women's history more properly in history education.
