Abstract
This thesis studies the critique on institution that can be seen in Gordon Matta-Clark's site-specific work and its relations to postmodernism art that started in the 1960s and 70s. His works not only failed to fit into the genres of art, architecture, or performance art, but also never received the spotlight in art history. However, postmodernism can be seen in his works, However, postmodernism can be seen in his works, because his works showed a completely different style from modernism works, which concentrated on independent form and setting apart different genres. This study concentrates on the minimalism, land art, and conceptual art that were in progress at his time (1960s to 70s), and the independence that his work contains in the web of these genres. After modernism, one of the major changes art showed was that art was trying to take on the form of narrative, something not done in the past. Artists did not concentrate on their work by shape and form alone, but also passed on narrative in their works related to culture, economy and politics. For these artists paid attention to the architectural space their works were being presented in, and also performed outdoors so that art could take place in reality and also perform the task of telling social context at the same time. Gordon Matta-Clark felt this tendency in the art of his time and was a leader in it by choosing sites inside or near the city to be his spaces of exhibition and studied the coherences related to the sites, and criticized the unfair institution that concerned them. His works started from his major, architecture, and later on spread to other areas from his loft to personal homes, stores, and even industrial factories. Matta-Clark also selected abandoned and unseen underground areas to exhibit and used cut fragments and photos of the areas where they were cut in uncommon ways to show different ways of using site. The variety of sites shown in his work calls for a need for his work to be reflected upon once more. Because many reviews about his extreme work operation have been concentrated on building cut, his artistic way. So, this thesis follows the core of his works, ‘site’, and goes on to explain the various regulations and concepts he went on to criticize by taking examples of the following: architectural changes, building cut, the use of markets such as stores and auctions, the use of cultural and historical places, the use of underground spaces, and the areas he showed through the by-products of his work. The much coherence surrounding his various sites and the oppressing institution inside them shown in Matta-Clark's work shows his need to escape the modernism cognition related to construction, art, and exhibition practices. The subjects he chose to criticize were not only restricted to fine arts like art and architecture but also economic activities and political parties that wielded political power. Matta-Clark viewed institution as an artificial frame that locks and standardizes human thought. This includes standardized architectural forms and exhibition practices and also the economic activities and political power that create the basic form of society and persuade the public. Matta-Clark tried to show their flaws in his work and also did not view buildings as simple architectural forms but as a single, standardized regulation. The areas and underground spaces he used to convey social messages shows this cognition clearly. By this, Matta-Clark's work was one that presented the use of immovable property and sites, and the form of art that criticized institution through it. His work is an early example of the narrative form art took in the 1960s through the 70s, and not only was he a pioneer in combining the genres of art but he also showed a new role of the artist by his work.
