Dominick Argento의 [Six Elizabethan Songs]에 관한 연구

Abstract

This study on the song cycle "Six Elizabethan Songs" by Dominick Argento (b.1927) was revealed to be a 20th century American composer whose contributions to the contemporary American vocal music were vital. Argento has always been very interested in and has extensive knowledge of vocal music, and he even stated that "the human voice is a unique instrument and the basis for all musical instruments". To date, he has composed ten song cycles and number of operas, choral music and vocal pieces, all of which express the beauty of the human voice. The subject of analysis in this thesis is his third song cycle "Six Elizabethan Songs", which is valued as his representative work and frequently performed. As the title suggest, the lyrics of the work come from the works of six poets from the sixteenth-century Elizabethan era, a period that is considered to be the pinnacle of English culture. Argento made this song cycle by harmonizing the form, mood, and subject of poems with the form of songs. This work was composed in order to express nature and the inner image of human beings, and contains various musical compositions corresponding to the contents of poems. The song cycle, which can be viewed as the combination of classical poetry and contemporary music technique, is very lyrical and abundant in melodic lines, and loyal to the contents of the poems. Not only does the song show the method of delicate and diverse musical expressions on vocal tunes but each song also agrees with each other and is also relatively simple. The essential words are emphasized through the vocal lines. Meanwhile, the piano accompaniment naturally takes an important role in establishing a gentle, poetic atmosphere. This study first analyzes Dominick Argento's life and artistic songs, and investigates the characteristics of his many musical works. In addition, it briefly introduces the background of the six poets, examining the background of the Elizabethan era. Through an analysis of the content of poems, the form of the songs, and the changes in the harmony and melody throughout, this study found that Dominick Argento is a composer who is not only classical but one who incorporated romantic and modern composition techniques in his "Six Elizabethan Songs". In this light, it can safely be said that this piece is one of the most outstanding pieces of the modern American vocal music. Although the "Six Elizabethan Songs" is performed frequently, there have not been many studies about its composer or the work itself. The purpose of this study is to analyze the work in detail to help maximize the musical expression of the songs when they are performed. In addition, with hopes that this work will play a continuing important role in contemporary song, the hope is that this study will aid future studies of vocal composers.;‘인간의 목소리는 독창적인 악기로서, 음악이 만들어지는 모든 악기의 근본이다’라고 논할 만큼 미국의 현대 작곡가 Dominick Argento(b.1927)는 평소 성악에 대해 많은 관심과 또한 지식을 가지고 있었다. 그는 10개의 연가곡 형식의 가곡집들과 다수의 오페라, 합창곡 등의 그의 성악작품을 통하여 인간의 목소리가 가지고 있는 아름다움을 보여주고 있다. 본 논문은 20세기 미국 현대 작곡가로써 미국 성악 음악사에 큰 공헌을 한 Dominick Argento의 연가곡인 Six Elizabethan Songs (엘리자베스 시대의 6개의 노래)에 관한 연구이다. Six Elizabethan Songs는 Argento의 두 번째 연가곡으로 그의 대표작 중 하나로 꼽힌다. 제목에서 알 수 있듯이 이곡은 영국 문학의 전성기였던 16세기 엘리자베스 시대에 활동한 시인들의 6개의 작품들이 가사로 사용되었으며, 자연과 인간의 내면을 표현하고자 한 것으로, 각 곡은 시의 내용에 따라 다양한 음악적 구성을 보여주고 있다. 그는 시의 형식, 분위기, 주제를 악곡의 형식과 일치 시켜 이 연가곡을 만들었으며 엘리자베스 시대의 고전적인 시와 현대적인 음악 기법의 결합을 서정적이면서 풍부한 멜로디라인으로 살리고 있다. 또한 Argento는 성악 선율과 반주부의 음악적 표현에 있어서 섬세하고 다양한 방법을 구사하였으며, 이는 자연스럽게 그 시적인 분위기를 만들어가는 중요한 역할을 하고 있다. 본 논문은 Argento의 여러 작품들에 관한 자료를 수집하여 우선 그의 생애와 그의 예술 가곡에 대하여 알아보았다. 또한 6편의 시를 쓴 시인들에 대한 간략한 소개와 더불어 가사의 배경이 된 엘리자베스 시대에 대해 연구하였다. 본론에서는 작품 분석을 통하여 그의 성악 음악의 특징을 알아보고 그의 작품에 대한 연주론적 분석을 시도하였으며, 시의 내용과 악곡의 형식, 화성과 조성의 변화에 대해 분석하였다. 이를 통해 작곡가 Dominick Argento의 고전적이면서도 낭만적이고, 현대적 작곡법까지 적절하게 조화를 시킨 그의 두 번째 연가곡 ‘Six Elizabethan Songs'는 현대 미국 성악 작품 중 가장 뛰어난 작품 중 하나임을 알 수 있었다. 이 곡은 화려하고도 유연한 음악적 기교와 정확한 발음 등의 기술적인 부분들을 요구한다. Six Elizabethan Songs는 음악적인 가치에 비해 작곡자나 곡의 해석에 관한 연구가 깊지 않다. 본 논문에서는 이 곡들을 자세히 연구하여, 연주에 있어서 작품 속의 음악적인 표현을 극대화 시킬 수 있게 도움을 주고자 한다. 또한 현대 예술 가곡의 레퍼토리에서 이 곡들이 중요한 역할을 할 수 있기를 기대하며 다른 성악가들의 새로운 연구에 도움이 되고자 한다.
