Stone statues such as stone men, stone animals, stone columns, and stone tables are placed in front of royal tombs or regular tombs. By placing a statue in front of the tomb, it not only gave the tomb site a majestic look, but also symbolized and portrayed the life of the deceased during his/her lifetime, and it also allowed the sons to fulfill one's filial duty. In order to protect the deceased from evil spirits and after life, stone statues such as stone men and stone animals guarded the royal tomb. Moreover, for royal tombs engraving past Kings and Queens, stone statues were especially significant in symbolizing a King's authority and succession to the throne. First introduced from China's Han(漢) dynasty, the placing of stone statues in front of tombs became ordinary by the Tang(唐) dynasty. Depending on the social status and rank of the deceased, there were differences in the types of stone statues placed. Starting from Han dynasty's society and politics, ritual institutions that were the basis of a country had strong influence, that when a new country was established, the quantity and variety in stone statues changed. Similarly, during the Koryo(高麗) dynasty, King Gongmin(恭愍王) era based on the Song(宋) dynasty's royal tomb culture tried to introduce this culture. However, the tomb style is very different from Northern Song(北宋)'s royal tomb. With the founding of the Joseon(朝鮮) dynasty, the authority of the King was reconsidered and during the Sejong era, the royal tomb culture was established based on the Koryo and Song royal tombs. This allowed the completion of the iconography and form of stone men and stone animals. In early Joseon, the process of the ritual institution and royal tomb culture being established was recorded in the 『The Annals of the Joseon Dynasty(朝鮮王朝實錄)』. Ceremony and procedures relating to the national funerals and directors who directed the building of the tombs can be verified by『The Annals of the Joseon Dynasty』. Stone statues culture was regulated under established royal tomb cultures, and people who have directed the construction of royal tomb have succeeded the tradition of forms in stone statues. Regulation of stone statues, genealogy of directors, forms of stone statues continued until the first half of the Joseon dynasty with some changes in style. Stone men and stone animals can be divided into three phases. The first phase was a period when the dynasty succeeded Koryo dynasty‘s system, and begins from when King Taejo(太祖) established Joseon dynasty until the first half of the Sejong years. Joseon royal tombs followed the system Hyeonjeongreung(the royal tomb of King Gongmin of the Koryo Dynasty, 玄正陵), and Park Jacheong(朴子靑) who was influenced by Kim Sahaeng(金師幸), the director and creator of Hyeonjeongreung, directed the Geonwonreung(the royal tomb of King Taejo of the Joseon Dynasty, 健元陵) and Heonreung(the royal tomb of King Taejong, 獻陵). During this period, Geonwonreung, Hureumg(the royal tomb of King Jeongjong, 厚陵), Heonreung was established, and with the exclusion of stone horse(石馬), the sculptures of scholarly officials(文石人), the sculptures of military officials(武石人), stone sheep(石羊), stone tiger(石虎) was made. Stone men and stone animals are expressed realistically and naturally, with depiction of details being delicate. The second phase starts from late Sejong(世宗) to early Joongjong(中宗). During the Sejong years, ancient system studies for ritual institution were actively done, and Joseon dynasty's ritual institution was based on Koryo's system was perfected by applying the systems of the Tang and Song dynasty. The stone statue culture of Joseon's royal tomb were based on Koryo's Hyeonjeongreung stone statues, and the stone horse was added based on Northern Song's Emperor. With the compilation of 『The Annals of King Sejong(世宗實錄)』「Five Rites(五禮)」and 『The National Five Rites(國朝五禮儀)』, this became the prototype for later tombs, and the style and form for stone statues were established, succeeding in later years. In Sejong year 24(1442), the stone horse was added in the tombs of Geonwonreung, Hureumg, and Heonreung, and was first used in old Youngreung(the royal tomb of King Sejong, 舊 英陵) after the royal tomb culture was perfected. Hyunreung(顯陵), Gwangreung(光陵), Changreumg(昌陵), and Sunreumg(宣陵) was built, and Youngreung moved. In the Sejong years, Yi Cheon(李?) directed the building of royal tombs, and Jeong Bun(鄭?), Roh Sashin(盧思愼), Gu Chigwan(具致寬), Kim Chil(金?), Kim Gookgwang(金國光), Suh Guhjung(徐居正), Yi Sejwa(李世佐) followed his steps. Different from Old Youngreung, which was built in a gigantic statue and overpowering Gwangreung, Changreumg, and Youngreung were proportionally built with realistic physical structure and stability. The naturalness shown in stone statues of Sunreumg disappeared, and stone statues were expressed rigidly and graphically. The third phase starts from late Joongjong to Seonjo(宣祖) years, and Jeongreumg(靖陵), Hyoreumg(孝陵), Gangreumg(康陵), Mokreung(穆陵) was built. Preceded stone statues became more stylized and graphing showing stiff aspects, and this style became established through the 『The National Five Rites』. However, in Joongjong year 13(1518) 『The Collected Codes of Great Ming(大明會典)』was imported from China, and Joseon accepted the system of Ming(明) dynasty influencing Joseon dynasty's five rites, established by 『The Law for King Sejong』and 『The National Five Rites』, and the five rites were altered and revised. Following this, starting from late Joongjong, there were changes in form, and expression of clothing appeared in the helmet and armor in the sculptures of military officials. This expression continued in stone men in tombs built after Jeongreumg's move such as Hyoreumg, Gangreumg, Mokreung. Similarly, stone men and stone animals that were formed during early Joseon dynasty royal tombs followed the iconography introduced in Koryo dynasty's Hyeonjeongreung, producing stone statues based on this tradition from Geonwonreung to Mokreung were produced without change. Stone men and stone animals of stone statues representing and reflecting a country's principle and ideology in governing, literature, legislations, international politics was another form of royal art reflecting. Therefore, for the late King that will be living the royal tomb in his after life, stone men and stone animals were produced under strict rule and planning of the royal tradition. As a form of royal art, stone statues reflected the phases of time of a particular period, and the art historical meaning of the statues is great.-
