Margaret Drabble's "Universal Narrative"

Abstract

This thesis explores the English novelist Margaret Drabble’s vision of palimpsestic narrative in her recent work, The Red Queen. Commonly known as a realist and traditional novelist who mainly focuses on the lives of her English contemporaries in Great Britain, her novelistic rewriting of the memoirs of the eighteenth-century Crown Princess of Korea was taken as a new turn both in its subject matter and metafictional narrative techniques. However, my argument is that by appropriating seemingly unconventional narrative techniques, Drabble effectively questions the postmodern doubts about universal human nature and searches for the possibility of "universal narrative" based on palimpsestic communication among individuals across the boundaries of time and space. Before proceeding on to the major discussion as to how Drabble achieves her goals, Drabble's personal and theoretical background for venturing to rewrite an Eastern court memoir will be examined in the introduction together with the minute discussion of her idea of community and "universal narrative" founded upon palimpsestic communication. The successive chapter will closely examine Drabble's multiple layering of subjective pronouns and narrative voices in relation to palimpsestic narrative. Then, the next two chapters will discuss how Drabble's vision of open community which is built on meaningful communication among individuals are charted and realized in the book by means of the literary echoes or voices that Drabble seems to incorporate into her writing. In Chapter III, the book's modern protagonist Barbara Halliwell's journey will be examined in relation to the structural and thematic motifs of the fairy tale tradition as she starts from an isolated individual and gradually matures into a member of a community of her own choice. Discussing abundant echoes and allusions to a number of fairy tales in the book, including the most prominent tale, "The Sleeping Beauty," this chapter will examine how Barbara breaks up the thorny walls that she had built for herself and makes a meaningful connection with the outside world by embracing painful memories of the past and starting a family of her own choice. In the following chapter, the female characters' resistance against socially imposed barriers that essentially separate and entomb individuals will be examined in light of another literary tradition that seems to run parallel to Drabble's writing, namely Mary Wollstonecraft’s The Wrongs of Woman, or Maria. The female characters' yearning for communication and their successive overcoming of their imprisonment by building an alternative community based on the solidarity and bonding of sisterhood show intriguing similarities to Wollstonecraft's novel, and thus, will be discussed in relation to it. The last chapter will be devoted to a detailed examination into Drabble's use of figurative language surrounding the color image red, and how Drabble extends the multiple layers and echoes of the narrative into her idea of the genealogy of sisterhood and thus, to the progressive palimpsestic communication that the genealogy offers. Drabble's vision of "universal narrative" will be discussed in relation to this central theme of genealogy of sisterhood in this chapter.;본 논문은 영국의 여류 작가 마가렛 드래블(Margaret Drabble, 1939-)의 작품 『붉은 왕세자빈』(The Red Queen, 2004)을 통해 그녀가 지향하고자 하는 팔림세스트적인 내러티브에 대해 살펴보고자 한다. 지금까지 주로 사실주의적, 전통주의적인 시각으로 현대 영국인의 삶을 그리는 작가로 알려져 왔던 드래블에게 있어서, 18세기 조선시대를 살았던 혜경궁 홍씨의 자서전적 비망록인 『한중록』을 현대 영국 작가의 입장에서 다시 쓴 이 작품은 그 소재뿐만 아니라 메타픽션적인 내러티브 기법에 있어서도 매우 혁신적인 시도로 평가되었다. 그러나 드래블은 일면 새롭고 비전통적인 것으로 보이는 내러티브 기법들을 전유함으로써 보편적인 인간 본성에 대한 포스트모더니즘의 회의에 강력한 이의를 제기하는 한편, 시공간의 경계를 뛰어넘는 개인간의 팔림세스트적인 소통에 기반을 둔 “범세계적 서사(universal narrative)”의 가능성을 모색한다. 본론에 앞서 서론에서는 드래블이 동양의 한 궁중 비망록을 팔림스세트적인 내러티브로 다시 쓰게 된 개인적, 이론적인 배경과 그녀가 말하는 공동체와 범세계적 서사의 개념을 자세히 살펴보고자 한다. 본론이 시작되는 II장에서는 드래블의 메타픽션적 내러티브 기법들, 즉 중첩적으로 나타나는 화자와 내러티브의 다중적 층들을 통해 이루어지는 팔림세스트적 대화와, 이로 인해 형상화되는 “우리(we)" 공동체의 개념을 살펴본다. 그 다음 드래블의 글 속에 보이는 문학 전통의 흔적들을 자세히 살펴봄으로써 그녀가 제시하는 열린 공동체의 비전, 즉 개인들간의 자유롭고 의미있는 소통을 통해 만들어지는 공동체가 작품 속에서 어떻게 실현되는지 살펴보고자 한다. 먼저 III장에서는 동화 소설(fairy-tale)의 구조적, 주제적 모티프를 통해 작품 속 현대 주인공 바바라 할리웰의 여정을 살펴보면서 고립된 한 개인이 내면의 벽을 극복함으로써 스스로 선택한 공동체에 편입되는 과정을 연구한다. 작품 속에서 발견할 수 있는 몇몇 동화 소설의 원형적 자취와 흔적들을 살펴보면서 주인공 바바라가 스스로 만든 벽을 부수고 나오는 모습을 고찰한다. 과거의 고통스러운 기억을 마주하고 감싸 안음으로써 바바라가 자신의 가족을 만들고 결국 외부 세계와의 의미있는 관계를 만들게 되는 과정을 살펴본다. IV장에서는 작품 속에서 많은 흔적을 보이는 또 하나의 문학 전통, 메리 울스톤크래프트의 소설 『마리아』(The Wrongs of Woman, or Maria)를 통해 개인들 간의 소통을 막음으로써 본질적으로 개개인을 분리시키는 사회에 적극적으로 대항하는 여성 인물들의 모습을 고찰한다. 부조리한 사회가 부여한 여러 가지 장애물 극복하고 소외받은 자들의 연대를 통해 스스로 공동체를 만들어나가는 여성들의 모습을 양 작품의 비교를 통해 연구한다. 마지막 V장에서는 작품 전체를 묶는 붉은 색의 이미지를 사용한 상징들의 의미를 살펴보고, 작가가 어떻게 내러티브의 중첩적 층들과 다양한 목소리들을 여성들의 계보, 또한 그것이 가능케 하는 팔림세스트적인 소통에 대한 비전으로 발전시키는지 고찰한다. 이 장에서는 작품의 핵심이 되는 여성의 계보를 통해 드래블의 범세계적 서사의 의의를 살펴본다.
