고령자 중심의 웹 인터페이스 분석을 통한 유니버설 웹 디자인 가이드라인 제안

Abstract

오늘날 우리는 지식과 정보가 개인과 국가 경쟁력의 원천이 되는 정보화 시대에 살고 있다. 지식과 정보가 새로운 경쟁력이 되고 있는 가운데 인터넷의 비약적인 확산과 발전은 우리들의 삶의 방식에 많은 변화를 가져왔다. 인터넷은 무한한 정보를 제공하는 가능성을 제시하였고 신속하고 정확하게 정보를 공유할 수 있는 또 다른 커뮤니케이션의 수단이 되면서 디지털 환경이라는 새로운 환경을 가져다 주었다. 그러나 디지털 혁명의 시대라는 새로운 패러다임 변화의 시대 속에서 간과할 수 없는 사실은 인터넷이 복잡한 지적 능력과 학습을 요구한다는 것이다. 이것은 디지털 격차라는 문제의 등장과 그로 인해 정보 격차가 심화되는 문제를 야기시켰다. 특히 고령화 사회가 진행되고 있는 현실에서 일반인을 중심으로 한 웹 인터페이스 디자인은 고령자들에게 접근성에 어려움을 느끼게 하는 요소들이 많아 정보 소외 계층으로 분리시키고 있다. 현재 대부분의 웹 사이트들은 읽기 힘든 작은 텍스트와 세심하게 마우스를 움직이지 않으면 클릭하기 어려운 아이콘, 낮은 콘트라스트의 배색 혹은 지나치게 번쩍이는 애니메이션 화면, 이해하기 어려운 표현들로 이루어진 메뉴, 상태를 알려주지 않는 느린 응답과 추상적인 메타포 등으로 고령자들에게 결코 편안한 공간이 아니다. 사람은 나이가 들면서 신체적으로 다양한 변화를 겪게 되고 신체활동 능력과 지각, 인지력이 떨어지기 때문에 고령자들이 인터넷을 통해 필요한 정보를 얻고 활용할 수 있기 위해서는 많은 배려가 필요하다. 유니버설 디자인은 연령과 심신의 능력, 사용환경에 상관없이 ‘누구나 손쉽게 사용할 수 있는 디자인’을 지향하는 사고 방식이다. 다양한 사람의 능력과 성향에 맞추어 삶을 향상시키고 소수의 사람이라도 물건을 쓰는데 소외감과 불편함을 느끼지 않도록 하는데 목적이 있다. 유니버설 디자인의 개념은 이미 제품 디자인과 환경 디자인 등에서 수년간 활발하게 논의되며 그 깊이와 폭을 넓혀 왔지만 웹에서의 유니버설 디자인 연구는 간헐적인 접근만 있었을 뿐 적극적으로 논의를 이끌어 간 사례는 찾아보기 힘들다. 본 연구에서는 선행 문헌을 통한 유니버설 디자인 개념을 재정립하고 고령자를 위한 웹 인터페이스 디자인 실험을 통해 고령자들에게 사용의 편리성과 접근의 용이성을 향상시킬 수 있는 웹 인터페이스 디자인 가이드라인을 제시하고자 하였다.유니버설 디자인의 개념을 통한 접근성이 배려된 웹 사이트 디자인은 고령자들이 효율적으로 정보를 접할 수 있을 뿐만 아니라 고령자가 가지고 있는 인지적 문제점으로 인한 불편함을 개선함과 동시에 고령화로 인한 노인 계층의 사회 참여의 기회를 넓힐 수 있는 기틀을 마련할 것이다.;Today, we are living in an information era in which information is the source of an individual and a nation’s competitive power. In this new world, the rapid dispersion and development of internet brought many changes to our ways of life. Internet offered the possibility of providing infinite information and became another means of communication in which accurate information is shared in a short period of time. However, in this new changing world of paradigm called the era of digital revolution, we can’t forgo the fact that internet actually demands a complex intellectual power. This brought forth the problem of digital gap and also the widening of this information gap. Especially, in this aging society, web designs based on the general public, has many elements the aged feel difficult to approach. This is why the aged people are classified as an information-alienated class. Currently, most of the existing web sites are not really a comfortable space for the aged because of its icons, screen, menus and metaphors. There are too many small texts that are hard to read, too many icons demanding careful movement of mouse, low contrast screen colors or extremely flashy animation screens, menus that are hard to understand, late replies that doesn’t talk about the processing conditions and too much abstruse metaphors. People meet and face lots of physical changes as they grow old, and thus, their ability of physical activities, recognition, and consciousness decrease. Thus, a lot of careful consideration should be given to the aged in order for them to find and use information they need from the internet. Universal design is a way of thinking which aims a design ‘anyone can easily use’, irrespective of the age, physical and mental abilities, and the environment of the user. The concept for universal design has been actively discussed and in the product and environment design. The meaning of universal design has become widespread and in depth. However, there were intermittent approaches to research on universal design in web sites but not an active case of coming up with an idea. In this research, we tried to re-erect the concept of universal design through preceding documents, and aimed to propose guidelines for web designs for the aged through experiments on web designs, so that they can easily approach and efficiently use internet web sites. Carefully constructed web site designs based on the concept of universal design, will help the aged to acquire information efficiently, improve the inconveniences they have because of their recognition problems, and also lay the groundwork for old people to actively participate in the society at the same time.
