Blue Color와 그 象徵性 硏究

Abstract

본 연구는 고대부터 현대까지 서양 복식에 나타난 blue의 역사와 복식 색채를 알아보고 blue의 상징성과 외연의 확대를 시도한 연구이다. 연구 방법은 blue에 대한 복식관련 문헌자료와 신문, 잡지, 인터넷 등의 기사 및 시각자료를 가지고 blue의 서양 복식의 역사의 사례를 들고 그 상징성과 외연의 확대를 논하고자 한다. Blue는 자연에 근원을 둔 색으로, 고대인들은 모래와 잿물을 섞은 구리가루를 주원료로 하는 인위적인 blue 안료를 만들었다. 중세에는 구리 탄산염을 이용한 blue가 발견되었다. 근대 이후에는 과학의 발달로 blue의 종류가 다양해졌으며, 인디고 염료가 발명되어 현재에 가까운 다양한 blue 염색이 가능해졌다. Blue는 시각적으로 불안한 마음을 안정시켜 주는 색이며, 또한 편안한 분위기에 휩싸여 있는 색으로서 일상생활로부터 도피시켜 주는 색으로 작용한다. 의무적 행동이나 지시 등 강제행동표지(mandatory action signs)의 색으로 이용된다. Blue는 그리스 시대와 로마시대에 몇 가지 종류의 복식에서 나타났지만, 전반적인 유행은 없었다. 반면 고대 이집트에서는 장신구와 화장 문화에서 청녹색이 유행하기도 했다. 중세에는 blue가 기독교 안에서 의미가 부여되고 색체계가 변화함에 따라 blue 의복이 남녀 모두의 복식에서 신분에 관계없이 유행하였고, blue의 상징성이 성립되기 시작하였다. 르네상스시기와 근대에는 과학의 발달로 blue의 종류가 다양해 졌으며, blue는 계속 의상의 선호색 중 하나로써 되었다. 현대패션에서 blue는 시대적 분위기나 디자이너의 개인적 생각에 따라 다양한 의미로 표현되고 있다. 그러나 지금의 blue 이미지가 패션의 기본 키워드로 지속되면서 도시적이며 모더니즘 느낌의 색들이 아름답게 여겨지며, blue는 이제 현대의 시대색으로 떠올랐다. 서양문화에서 blue의 상징성은 첫째, 하늘의 이미지, 둘째, 우울의 이미지, 셋째, 블루진의 이미지로 크게 구분된다. 하늘의 이미지는 다시 신성, 꿈, 미래, 희망, 자유, 스포츠 웨어로 외연이 확대 되었다. 첫째, 하늘은 중세시대의 스테인드글라스에서 보여 지는 지속되기를 바라고, 영원의 바람의 신성이라는 상징성을 성립시켰으며, 신성의 이미지는 다시 기독교와 왕의 상징으로 의미가 확대되었다. 또한 하늘의 광대함과 무한함은 꿈, 미래, 희망의 이미지를 가지고 그 이미지는 평화와 낭만의 상징으로 외연의 확대가 되었다. 하늘의 blue는 먼 곳에 대한 동경의 이미지를 가지고 있어 자립, 해방감을 가지고 자유와 혁명의 외연의 확대가 되었다. 하늘의 밝고 경쾌하며 활동적인 이미지는 스포츠 웨어와 유니폼의 외연의 확대가 되었다. 둘째, blue에서 우울의 상징성은 더 나아가 암울, 체념, 비극, 불행의 이미지로 확대되어 죽음으로 외연의 확대가 되었다. 셋째, 블루진의 blue는 노동자의 작업복 색으로 기분상징을 일으키며 노동자의 색으로 외연의 확대가 되었다. 본 연구에서는 점차 이미지가 산업화 되어가는 현대 사회에서, 시각적인 상징효과가 크게 작용하는 색채를 통해, 이것이 가지는 정보 표현과 전달력, 그리고 상징에 기여하는 바를 인식하고, 복식 색채 상징성에서 보여 지는 blue의 다양한 상징성을 연구하며 색채상징으로부터 외연의 확대를 연구하였다.;This study inquires the history and the imagery of blue color in Western costumes from ancient to present times and experimenting extended image of Blue. Using documentary records and newspaper, magazine, or internet articles and visual materials, imagery of blue in the Western culture is studied focusing on colored costumes. Therefore, this study will discuss imageries of blue and extension of denotation showing some examples in history of Western costume. Blue is the color that was originated from the nature. Ancient people made artificial dyes from sand, lye and powdered copper compounds. In middle age, blue color using copper was discovered. In modern days, different types of blue emerged as a result of technological advancement. Moreover, the invention of Indigo dye lead to further diversification of blue color dyeing. Blue relieves the anxiety and represents peaceful atmosphere. It acts as an escape from stressful everyday life. It is also used for indicating duties and instructions, and mandatory action signs. In the history of the costume, blue originated from ancient times. The color appeared on several styles of costumes but there was no prevailing style in the period of Greek and Rome. However, blue-green spread abroad in accessories and make-ups in ancient Egypt. During the middle age, blue gained its meaning and place in the Christianity and became a constituent member in the Christian symbol. Consequently, blue became popular in both men and women’s costumes regardless of social status and the symbolism of blue color started to form. During Renaissance and modern days, blue color has been diversified and people wore blue as one of their preferred colors thanks to the advancement of modern science. In today’s fashion, blue expresses contemporary trends or the individual ideas of designers. In twenty first century, imagery of ‘futurism’has been regarded as basic keyword of fashion and color of future feeling has been considered as beautiful. As a result, blue became representative color of today’s generation. Blue’s imagery can be divided mainly into an ‘imagery of sky’, an ‘imagery of depression’ and an ‘imagery of blue jean’. The ‘imagery of sky’ was extended againinto deity, dream, future, hope, freedom, and sports wear. The image of sky brought imagery of deity as wish for continuation and eternity. The image of deity was extended to imagery of Christianity and a king again. Vast and infinite sky symbolizes a dream, future, and a hope. The images have been expanded to include peace and romance. The blue color of sky has image of longing for a distant place so that the image stands for independence and a sense of freedom. It has been extended to liberty and revolution. Cheerful and active image of sky has extended into sports wear and uniform. Depression imagery of blue has extended into gloominess, abandonment, tragedy and misfortune and death again. The blue color in blue jean has been symbolized as color of working clothes so that it has extended into color of laborer. As discussed above, the diverse imagery of blue color can be applied into today’s fashion design. It will provide a momentum for enlarging the range of the use of fashion color. This study is meaningful as it brings awareness of imagery of costume and color and discusses extension of denotation.
