Macbeth의 파멸에 관한 硏究

Abstract

본 논문에서는 William Shakespeare의 Macbeth(ca. 1606)에서 주인공 Macbeth가 빠져드는 파멸을 구체적으로 분석하였다. Macbeth는 왕의 친척으로 주변 사람들의 칭송을 받는 용감한 장군이다. 그러나 그는 남달리 큰 야심의 소유자로, 마녀들과 Lady Macbeth에 의해 그의 야심이 충동을 받자, 마치 악의 화신처럼 되어 버린다. 그리고 야욕을 달성시키기 위해 그는 자신과 함께 선한 사람들 까지도 멸망시키고 있다. Macbeth는 Shakespeare의 다른 비극의 주인공 즉 Othello나 Lear 같은 주인공들과는 달리 처음부터 악(惡)과 악행에 따른 보복까지 인지(認知)하면서 악을 범하고 있으며, 죽음에 직면해서도 자신의 잘못을 인정하거나 후회하지 않고 있다. 그러나 파멸의 과정에서 보여 지는 Macbeth의 고통과 고민, 그리고 고립상태 또한 그의 입을 통해서 흘러나오는 시적(詩的)인 언어는 그가 악을 행했음에도 불구하고 우리의 동정의 대상이 된다. 본고에서는 왕이 되고자 하는 욕망을 지닌 Macbeth가 마녀들과 Lady Macbeth의 유혹과 충동에 의하여 악을 행함으로써 파멸에 이르게 되는 것을 살펴보았다. 그리고 Macbeth가 야심을 가지고 있었다 할지라도, 그를 악으로 이끄는 외부의 초자연적인 마력(魔力)이나 악을 행하는데 따르는 그의 엄청난 고통과 고민은, Macbeth를 단순한 악한이 아니라 악한으로 전락한 비극의 주인공으로 만든다고 결론지었다.;In this thesis I have analyzed the damnation of Macbeth concretely represented in William Shakespeare's Macbeth (ca. 1606). Macbeth, as King Duncan's cousin, is a brave general who commands universal admiration. He, however, who possesses the excess ambition and when his ambition impulsed by the witches and Lady Macbeth, he becomes a devil incarnate. And in order to attain his ambition, he destroys himself and other innocent people. Macbeth does evil things recognizing the retaliation of evil doing from the first differing from Shakespeare's other tragic heroes, Hamlet, Othello, and Lear. And when Macbeth faces to his death, he never recognizes and regrets his evil doing. However, Macbeth's suffering and awe, isolation, and poetry through his mouth, though he does evil thing, he is sympathized. In this thesis, I have tried to show that Macbeth falls into the damnation, as he who has the ambition he becomes a King does evil thing by the witches' temptation and Lady Macbeth's impulse. Though Macbeth has the ambition, I have concluded that the supernatural witchcraft which leads him to evil and his excess suffering and awe following evil doing make Macbeth not a villain but a tragic hero who becomes a villain.
