D.H. Lawrence의 소설에 나타난 이상적인 인간관계

Abstract

Lawrence의 근본사상은 二元論的인 세계관으로 그에 의하면 인간의 현실세계는 커다란 근원의 힘의 한 순간의 표출에 불과하다는 것이다. 그런데 인간의 창조적인 삶은 항상 그 힘을 인식하며 사는 것이라고 한다. 그래서 이 근원의 힘을 인식하고 있는 창조적인 삶의 형태를 그는 "Ralnbow", "Crown", "Holy Ghost"라고 칭하며 이들은 모두 같은 의미를 지니고 있다. 그리고 왕관을 받치고 있는 사자와 일각수의 이야기로써 이 둘 사이의 균형이 깨진 상태는 파괴적이라고 하고 있다. 그런데 이러한 근원의 힘은 남녀의 성적결합을 통하여 파악할 수 있다는데서 이러한 二元論은 한 인간의 내면세계에서는 육체와 정신의 조화, 그리고 균형잡힌 인간관계가 중요시된다. 이러한 사상을 Lawrence가 발견하게 된 계기는 Sons and Lovers를 씀으로써이다. 그리고 그는 균형잡힌 인간관계를 방해하는 원인은 외적인 것에서도 기인함을 알 수 있었다. 이러한 외적인 요인은 Morel과 Morel 부인과의 관계, Paul과 Mlriam의 관계를 통하여 나타난다. 이러한 사회의 이념체제가 인간관계를 해치는 원인은 현상세계가 절대적이라고 믿기 때문이다. 그러나 그러한 사고를 버리게 되는 계기가 생긴다. 이는 Paul이 Clara와의 육체적 관계를 통하여 근원의 힘을 발견함으로써이다. 이렇게 하여 Paul이 어머니로부터 얻은 독립은 Lawrence로 하여금 사회의 외적 환경이 인간에게 미치는 영향을 비판할 수 있게 하였으며 그의 세계관의 정립에 도움을 주게된다. Sons and Lovers에서 발견한 근원의 힘에 대한 인식을 바탕으로 하여 The Rainbow에서는 새로운 인간관계가 모색된다. The Rainbow에 나타난 첫 세대부터 인간의 현실세계가 이러한 무의식적인 삶에만 머물러 있을 수 없다는 것을 보여주고 있으며 그래서 그들은 새로운 삶의 형태를 찾는 움직임을 보인다. 그런데 제3대 Ursula에 와서는 인간관계가 더욱 환경의 영향을 받게되어 창조적인 남녀관계를 이룩하기가 그만큼 힘들어졌다. 그러나 Ursula는 현실을 넘어선 미지의 세계의 존재를 인식하게 되어 구원된다. 그리고 Lawrence는 Ursula를 통하여 그의 이상향을 제시한다. 이것은 Ursula가 갖고 있는 한 내면세계는 바로 그 시대의 움직임을 반영하고 있으며 또한 그녀 한 개인에게 선조들의 여러 가지 특징이 함께 존재하고 있기 때문에 현실세계에 대한 비판도 가능하기 때문이다. 그래서 Lawrence는 Ursula의 움직임을 통하여 시대비판과 더불어 그의 이상향을 제시할 수 있게 된다. Women in Love에서는 The Rainbow에서 수립한 Lawrence의 이상향의 실천단계를 살피는 것이다. 그런데 모든 사람은 이런 이상향을 보지 못한채 파괴적인 삶만 살게 된다. 그러한 양상은 바로 개인적인 차원에서는 정신과 육체의 부조화로 나타나며 파괴적이다. 이러한 파괴성을 주인공 Blrkin은 관능으로의 퇴화와 이성의 힘의 파괴로 구분하고 있다. 현대 기계 문명을 대표하는 Gerald는 지성편중의 외길을 걸어온 서구문명의 파괴성을 보이고 있다. 그리고 그의 죽음은 그러한 시대의 종말을 예견할 수 있게 한다. 여기에 비추어 Birkin과 Ursula의 이상적인 인간관계인 "star-equlllbrlum"의 중요성은 더욱 부각된다고 하겠다.;Lawrence's conception of the world is dualistic. According to him the phenomena of the reality is only a momentary manifestation of the great force which is the true reality of being. So man's creativity depends on his willingness to believe in this great force. He calls this idealistic life as "Grown" which can be maintained by an individual who is conscious of the great force. And by the metaphors of lion and unicorn of royal arms fighting each other for the crown, the symbol of victory, he intimates that if one is destroyed by another, the crown falls off and the effect is destructive. And he believes that only by sexual union of man and woman, the great force could be realized. Hence his dualism is applied to his treatment of man to woman relationship which is in a state of still tension. Lawrence found this dualism in his autobiographic novel, Sons and Lovers. He found also that human relationship could be hampered by social or moral conceptions. It is manifest in the human relationship surrounding Mrs Horel and between Paul and Miriam. These outer forces inflict on human relationship because status quo is believed to be the absolute one. But Paul can detect its falsity by discovering another vision of the world through the sexual union with Clara. So he can be free from his mother who is the epitome of false reality which asserts only its own rights. Thus by Paul's independence of his mother, Lawrence could establish his own vision of life. In The Rainbow, he searches for a better way of living through a new relationship between man and woman. It is evident from the first generation that an individual cannot stay in safety in the unconscious excluding reality. So they should seek a new form of life. Then it becomes more difficult that an ideal human relationship can be sustained because of the increasing urbanization. But Ursula is saved from the sordid reality because she recognizes some unknown forces which is beyond reality. And Lawrence himself presents the real life form through the rainbow of Ursula. The reason why Lawrence can establish his own view of life are as follows; First, Ursula's inner life is represented as the projection of the outer forces. Second, she has also inherited the vital life force from her Brangwen tradition. So she can reject the vicious influences which threaten her inner being. Hence by the individual movement of Ursula, Lawrence can criticize his epoch and present another vision of life. In Women in Love, there are antithetical movements. He is exploring whether human beings are living real life or not. But most of the humanity cannot see beyond the reality, So their life is destructive. Such a destructiveness is revealed in an individual as a disruption of harmony between mind and body. Birkin describes these disruptions which are categorized as a sensual wallowing on the one hand and mind's willfulness on the other. Gerald is represented as a central figure of the destructive reality in the novel. He is the prototype of disintegrating Western civilization which has had only one way of life. And his death is the death of a whole culture and sign of the end of such an epoch. So the importance of star-equilibrium achieved by Birkin and Ursula is enhanced in contrast to the sordid reality.
