G. B. Shaw의 여성관

Abstract

George Bernard Shaw (1856 - 1950)는 현대 영국이 낳은 위대한 극작가이자 비평가, 사상가로 그의 극은, 물질적으로 풍부해도 정신적으로는 빈곤한 상태에 있던 Victorian의 모든 사람들을 실망과 권태의 나락에서 구원하려는 매개체였다. 19세기의 영국은, 산업혁명의 결과 고도로 발달된 문명사회를 이룩했다. 그러나, 고도성장의 사회 이면에는 모순과 부조리가 만연해 있었다. 이는 자본주의 경제체제의 불합리성에 기인한 빈익빈, 부익부의 상황이었다. 이 때문에 빈, 부의 차가 격심해지고, 가난은 갖가지 사회악을 초래했다. 이러한 사회제도의 모순과 부조리를 타파하기위해 Shaw는 극을 통해서 정치·사회·경제·계급·노동문제등 각 방면에 걸쳐, 사회주의자로서의 자신의 사상을 피력했다. Shaw에게 있어 극은, 사회의 모순과 인간의 불의에 대해 과감한 투쟁을 벌이는 도구였다. 그의 극에서 시종일관된 Shaw의 주장의 핵심은 모든 분야에서의 만인의 평등이다. 1800년대는 여성해방운동이 대두되기 시작했으며, 급진적인 사상을 가진 모든 사람들이 이에 참여했다. 그들 중에서도 특히 Shaw는 대부분의 작품을 통해 여성에게 관습과 전통을 탈피하여 스스로 生存의 가치를 찾고, 사회발전에 이바지 하기를 강조했다. 여성에 대한 Shaw의 태도는 단지 남성의 애완물이며 종속물로, 오로지 희생과 복종만을 강요해 오던, 종래의 고정 관념에 대한 반박이었다. 그는 여성도 남성과 동등한 입장에서 한 인격체로 대해야하며, 모든 분야에 걸쳐 그들의 권익이 보장되어져야 한다고 주장했다. 남녀 평등에 대한 Shaw의 주장은 "Life Force"를 지닌 여성을 보여줌으로서, 여성들로 하여금 그들의 생에 의의를 되찾게 하고, 인류창조에 있어 주역을 담당케 했다. "Life Force"를 지닌 여성들은 스스로의 문제해결을 위해 새로운 창조적 진화를 거듭해 나간다. 그러므로, Shaw의 여주인공들은 해가 거듭될수록 점점 더 강력해져서 남성을 지배하는 형태로까지 발전한다. 본 논문에서는 Shaw의 53편에 달하는 작품 중, 여성인물의 발전과정이 두드러지게 나타나는 네 작품을 중심으로 살펴보고자 한다. 즉 남녀평등을 위한 원초적 조건인 교육받은 여성 Vivie의 Mrs. Warren's Profession과 "Life Force"를 지닌 여성 Ann의 Man and Superman, 진보 하려는 자신의 will에 의한 성장·발전을 거듭하는 Ellaz의 Pygmalion, 그리고 "life Force"에 의한 창조적 진화를 수행하여 마침내 자신의 의지와 우주적인 의지가 합일되어 聖女의 경지에 이르는 Joan의 Saint Joan을 중심으로 "Life Force"에 의해 점진적으로 발전해나가는 Shaw의 여성인물들을 살펴보고자 한다.;George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950), the greatest figure in English drama in the late nineteenth and twentieth century, tried throughout his life to abolish contradictions and absurdities in every aspect of the society resulted from the blunder of Capitalism. His plays are the media of demonstrating his thoughts as a Socialist. And one of the central drives of his life was a desire to achieve a condition of absolute equality of everyman's right in the world, for the equality is the first and the most important means to abolish every absurdity. Among the problems of equality, the most remarkable and serious one is the equality in sex. Shaw emphasizes that women should be liberated from their conventional and traditional roles in order to achieve their self-consciousness and contribute to society. In this thesis, I have traced Shaw's view of ideal woman from vivie through Ann and Eliza to St. Joan represented in Mrs. Warren's Profession, Man and Superman, Pygmalion and Saint Joan. In these four plays, Shaw who pretend to be a creative evolutionist shows us women's accomplishment of the creative evolution with "Life Force" and the stages of their development from achieving the equality in sex to a complete superwoman. Shaw's view of woman is that women have their potential individual will too, so if they are given equal opportunities like men, they will be able to display their abilities as well as men. And carrying out creative evolution with their "Life Force", they have greater purpose for the future of human being and take the leading part of establishing advanced human society. That is, through creative evolution with "Life Force", women slough off her role as a mere agent of "Life Force" and by identifying themselves with the "Life Force" itself, they reach a stage of superman in advance of men.
