C. F. Gounod의 opera Faust 硏究

Abstract

浪漫主義(Romanticism)가 무르익던 19세기 中葉, 프랑스 오페라 劇場이 外國人에 의해 支配當하고 있을 때, 純粹한 파리 사람인 作曲家, 샤를르 프랑소와 구노(Charles Fransois Gounod, 1818∼1893)는 그의 오페라 <파우스트>(Faust)를 발표하여 當時 오페라界에 大革命을 일으킨다. 구노의 <파우스트>는 프랑스 浪漫主義의 最高水準으로 評價되는 作品으로 괴테의 戱曲을 바탕으로 作曲되었다. 原作인 괴테의 <파우스트>는 15세기경부터 전해오는 惡魔와 契約者의 이야기로, 끝없는 人間의 理想과 慾望을 좇아 惡魔에게 肉體와 靈魂을 판다는 傳說을 藝術的으로 完成시킨 作品으로 人間과 超自然的인 存在와의 어두운 關係를 象徵하고 있다. 이러한 괴테의 <파우스트>를 素材로 하여 많은 作曲家들이 作曲하였으나, 구노의 <파우스트>만이 數千回의 公演을 갖고 있다. 괴테의 大作을 全體的으로 描寫하지 않고 主人公 <파우스트>의 悲劇的인 사랑에 焦点을 맞추어 作曲된 구노의 <파우스트>는 一貫性 있는 劇의 構成, 莊嚴한 管絃樂의 울림, 曲 全體를 흐르는 微妙한 旋律 등으로 大衆을 感動시킨 浪漫主義의 表象이다. 이러한 觀點에서 오페라 <파우스트>가 지닌 劇的인 內容과 音樂的인 進行을 分析해 봄으로써 <파우스트>가 表出하는 大衆性을 追究해 보려는 것이 本硏究의 目的이다. 따라서 本硏究에 있어서는 作曲上의 和聲分析 및 形式分析에 意義를 두지 않고, 聲樂徒의 位置에서 劇의 展開와 音樂의 進行을 關聯시켜 그 흐름을 硏究하는데 重點을 두었다. 第1幕에서부터 劇의 進行에 따라, 劇의 內容 卽 事件의 內容, 各場面의 分圍氣, 主人公의 心理 등을 어떠한 音樂的 特徵으로 描寫하고 있는가를 比較·分析함으로써 作曲의 表現上 特徵을 찾으려 하였다. <파우스트>는 롯시니(Rossini, 1792∼1686)나, 마이어베어(Meyerbeer, 1971∼1864)의 아리아 中心이었던 오페라에 대한 改革으로, 朗誦과 아리아, 管絃樂 사이의 균형잡힌 進行으로 全曲이 一貫性을 지니도록 構成되었다. 劇的인 內容과 音樂的인 形式의 一致가 問題點으로 擡頭되는 오페라에 있어 <파우스트>는 全幕의 主流를 이루고 있는 豊富한 旋律美와 쉽고 單純한 進行, 音樂과 劇의 調和있는 構成으로 大衆性을 띠면서도 품위 있는 서정성을 內包한 프랑스 오페라史의 代表的인 作品이다. <파우스트>의 가장 根源的인 土臺를 形成하고 있는 것은 旋律的인 主題들로서 單純하며 自然스러운 形態로 連結되어 各登場人物들의 分圍氣를 充分히 描寫하고 있다. 또한 옛 作曲家들의 傳統技法의 頻繁한 使用은 意圖的인 것으로, 大衆들과 보다 密接하게 하기 위한 方法으로 理解되며, 이 오페라가 가지고 있는 大衆性을 이야기하고 있다. <파우스트>의 全般的인 흐름은 單純性의 使用 卽, 單純美로 생각할 수 있는데, 이러한 單純美는 精神世界의 깊은 支柱였던 信仰心에서 오는 조용한 分圍氣와, 女性的인 纖細한 性格에서 基因하는 純粹함에서 우러나오는 것으로, 가장 높은 藝術의 極致에 해당하는 單純함으로 나타나고 있다. 單純한 劇的 進行속에 單純한 音樂의 進行은 이 오페라가 갖는 大衆性을 充分히 內包하고 있으며, 이는 오늘날 구노의 오페라가 빛을 잃지 않고 있는 緣由라고 생각된다.;When it was at the height of Romanticism, in the mid-nineteenth century and French opera house was under the control of foreigners, a genuine Parisian, a composer C. F. Gounod (1818- 1893) published his opera that brought about a great revolution of the opera world of the day. Gounod's Faust composed on the basis of Goethe's drama has been estimated at the highest level of French Romanticism. Original work, Goethe's Faust, is a story handed down from about the fifteenth century between the devil and a contractor. It is a work artisically perfected the legend that man prostitutes his body and spirit because he has endless pursuit of his ideal and desire. It symbolized the gloomy relation between man and supernatural being. Though composers wrote many works with the material of Goethe' Faust, only Gounod's Faust has been thousands of performances. There is certainly reasons why it has a good run. Gounod's Faust was not described on the whole Goethe's the great work but was composed bringing a hero, Faust's unfortunate love into focus. Gounod's Faust has moved the public and is the symbol of Romanticism owing to the coherent construction of plot, the grand orchestra music, and the delicate melody that flows though the whole work. In view of these points, this study has looked into the popularity that Faust represented by analyzing dramatic substance and musical progress. Hence, as a vocalist, I have not analyzed the harmony and style of composition but have laid emphasis on the study on the work by relating the development of the drama with progress of music. From Act 1, according to the progress of the play, by comparing and analyzing the substance of the plot, the atmosphere of each scene, and the mental state of leading characters, this study has found the expressional character the composer used. Rossini (1792-1818) and Meyerbeer (1791-1864) composed operas mainly consisted of aria. But, From act 1 to act 5, be cause Faust was coherently composed including recitative aria, and the balanced progress of orchestra music it was a reformatory work of the day. Opera is accounted much of the harmony of dramatic contents and musical form. But, composed of plentiful melodies, simple progress, and harmonius formation through all acts Faust is the French typical opera with popularity and elegant lyricism. Faust had also completely described the mood of all characters by means of simple and natural melody. To be brief, the whole progresses of Faust are simplicity. The excellent simplicity of Faust came from peaceful atmosphere, womanly delicacy, and purity derived from religion, the deep-seated prop of spiritual world. The simplicity of Faust corresponds to the highest reach of art. Gound's opera Faust has been estimated highly as an everlasting masterpiece because of the good simplicity it involves through the simple and coherent progress of the plot and music.
