1930年代 「劇藝術硏究會」에 對한 硏究

Abstract

韓國新劇史에 있어 劇藝術硏究會는 最初의 本格的인 신극단체로서 소극장운동을 표방하며 리얼리즘연구의 傳統을 세웠다는 点에서 重要한 意味를 지닌다. 따라서 本論文에서는 劇硏의 演劇史的 背景·活動·公演作品 및 功過와 演劇史的 位置를 中心으로 살펴 보았다. 劇硏은 海外文學派가 中心이 된 12名이 1931年에 創立했는데 그 目的은 劇에 對한 一般의 理解를 넓히고, 旣成劇團이 邪道에 흐름을 구제하고, 진정한 意味의 우리 신극을 세우는 것이었다. 그래서 劇硏은 大衆啓蒙活動과 演劇敎育에도 힘을 기울였고, 또 活潑한 演劇批評活動을 벌임으로써 演劇批評의 領域을 擴大·深化시켰다. 1932年엔 직속극단을 創設하여 實際的인 公演活動을 벌였다. 그들은 西歐의 리얼리즘劇을 公演함으로써 우리나라에 眞情한 近代劇의 傳統을 樹立하고자 했다. 恒常 硏究的이고 實驗的인 姿勢로 臨하는 소극장운동을 표방하면서 營利性보다는 藝術性을 追求했다. 이러한 努力은 종래의 大衆에 영합하는 興行劇(신파극)에선 期待할 수 없었던, 現實認識 또는 現實批判의 눈을 관중들에게 키워주었다. 처음엔 주로 飜譯劇 爲主의 公演活動이었으나 점차로 創作劇을 많이 上演함으로써 관중과의 距離를 좁히려고 努力했으며, 또 유치진, 이광래 등 우수한 劇作家가 나오게 된 것은 劇硏의 공로라고 할 수 있다. 劇硏은 最初로 演劇專門誌인 機關誌 「극예술」을 發刊하기도 했으며, 放送劇, 映畵製作에도 關與했다. 劇硏은 1938년엔 日帝의 强壓에 의해 職業劇團인 「劇硏座」로 轉身하게 되었다. 이 期間동안 劇硏은 純粹한 演劇專門劇團으로 발돋움하려고 努力했으나, 財政的 基盤이 없고 劇團 經營의 부실 등으로 因해 末期에는 大衆에 영합하는 公演活動을 했다. 劇硏의 공로로는 무엇보다도 리얼리즘演劇의 傳統을 樹立한 것으로 볼 수 있으며, 그 過誤로는 幅넓은 大衆의 支持基盤을 獲得하지 못한 点과 末期에 興行劇처럼 大衆에 영합한 点을 들 수 있겠다. 劇硏은 1939年 解散될 때까지(만8년) 우리나라에 리얼리즘劇을 樹立하기 위해 比較的 純粹한 藝術精神을 잃지 않고 다각도로 演劇運動을 한 것은 높이 評價되어야 하며, 劇硏의 精神이나 活動은 오늘날의 沈滯한 演劇界에도 되살려 볼 必要가 있으리라 생각된다.;The Society for Research in Dramatic Art (Keukyesulyonguhoe) has an important place in the history of Korean dramatic arts because of the first and the legitimate new drama group. The Importance of this Society is the contributions to the establishment and enhancement of the standards of realistic drama. The Society was organized by 12-man in July 1931. Its purpose was to promote the study of dramatic arts and to prevent the exisisting groups from straying their proper ways and to establish "our new drama." So the society undertook the enlightenment movement about dramatic arts, and they gave effect to drama education and criticism on drama. In 1932, they established the Experimental Theatre which attached to the Society. The Experimental Theatre devoted to the performance of the European plays in order to establish the tradition of realistic dram a in Korea. The Theatre always endeavored for the dramatic arts with studious and experimental spirits, so they managed the theatre and performed many plays. Those series of trial had influenced upon Korean people as they could recognize or criticize the realistic situation about them. The fact could not be expected to the other drama groups in that day. They performed many translated plays and our Korean plays, and then they tried to be friendly with Korean people. The Theatre braught up some brilliant dramatists as You Chee-jin and Lee Kwang-rae etc. The Society published their own drama magazine, "Theatre Art". In 1938, unfortunely the Society had changed their original name because of Japaniese tyranny. During "Keukyanjwa" period, the society intended and tried not to lose their pure artistic spirits. But, they gradually turned to popular theatre because of the difficult theatrical finance. The society was closed in 1939 as the Japanese Tyranny had oppressed upon them. The Society played major role in establishing and enhancement of the standards of "new drama" while Korea was in such a bad condition like a colony.
