Graham Greene의 作品에 나타난 moral identity 追求의 問題

Abstract

Graham Greene은 일반적으로 카톨릭 작가로 규정지워져 그의 작품들 역시 특정 종교의 옹호를 위한 면모만을 내포한 듯 인식되기 쉽다. 그러나 Greene 자신이 모든 교회 교리의 편협성에 반기를 들고 이를 가장 인간적인 면에서 소화하려 했듯이 그의 작품에 나타난 인물들 역시 모두 카톨릭이면서 그 인간적 갈등에 있어 카톨릭 계율이 갖는 종교적 한계성을 훨씬 초월하는 全인간 상황을 대변하게 된다. 즉 그들이 카톨릭이라는 것은 카톨릭 교리에 매달림을 의미하는 것이 아니라. 新의 문제를 보다 깊이 있게 인식하고 있다는 것을 강조할 뿐이다. Greene의 인물들은 카톨릭이라는 사실 外에 몇가지 유사점을 지니고 있다. 그들은 Greene 자신이 그러하였듯, 자신을 둘러싼 세계에 대해 극도의 절망과 공포를 느끼고 있으며 과거 어린시절의 경험에서 유래되는 기억들은 끊임없는 강박관념으로 나타난다. 또한 후기 작품들에서 두드러지는 연민(pity) 역시 그의 인물들을 지배하는 대표적인 요소이다. 따라서 그의 작품에서는 어쩔 수 없이 이러한 강박관념들을 낳는 인간의 존재양상과 전지전능하고 자비로운 神의 존재를 양립시킬 수 없다는 사실이 한 인물의 내부에 큰 갈등을 일으키며 극적으로 전개된다. 이러한 가운데 잃어 버리고 좌절된 자아를 부단히 확인해 나가고자 하는 노력은 바로 한 개인의 Moral Identity추구라는 문제로 나타나며 이는 곧 넓은 의미에서의 종교적 의식(Religious sense) 일치되는 태도이다. 왜냐하면 Greene의 작품에 나타나는 종교적 의식은 모든 경직된 계율을 탈피하고 넘어서는 가운데 感知하게 되는 神의 존재를 통해 인간존재의 가치를 투영시켜 보려는 정념을 담고 있기 때문이다. 이와 같은 문제는 Greene의 작품을 이루는 주요한 흐름이라 할 수 있으며, 따라서 여기서는 그러한 요소를 Greene의 몇몇 작품을 중심으로 각 인물의 내부갈등 과정을 통해 보여 주는데 초점을 맞추었다. ;Graham Greene, Generally being regarded as a Catholic writer, his works are apt to be declined to propa gate merely a special religious aspect. But as Greene himself has rebelled against all kinds of strict christian doctrines and comprehended them in a most humanistic way, characters in his works also are not only Catholics, but also represent all human conditions which far transcend the limit of catholic doctrines in their genuine human conflicts. That is to say, the fact that they are catholics does not mean that they are subjected to the Catholic doctrines, but merly emphasizes that they accept the problems of God more seriously. Greenean people have some common aspects except that they are Catholics. Like Greene himself, his characters feel extreme despair and terror about the world which surrounds them. And some memories from their childhood experience continucusly haunt them. Pity which is specially comspicuous in his later works is also an important obsession which sways his characters. Therefore in his works, the fact that this type of human condition which makes these obsessions can't be compatible with the existence of merciful and omnicient God causes immense conflict in the heart of each major character and develops the story dramatically. In this process the efforts devoted in recovering frustrated self is appeared in a way of accomplishing one's moral identity. And this also can be identified in a broad extent with religious sense which is fundamental characteristic in his works. For, both involve the strong with that tends to reflect the importance of than existence through God's presence which can be perceived by overcoming the narrow, doctrinal principles. In General, these problems can be regarded as a dominant stream of Greenean works. Therefore, every effort in this thesis, was focused on the point as described in above through major Greenean charcters' internal conflicts.
