음운규칙의 적용양식 연구

Abstract

이 논문의 목적은 모든 음운 규칙이 예측 가능하게, 방향적으로 적용이 됨을 입증하려는 것이다. 규칙 적용양식(mode of rule application)의 문제에 있어서, 논의의 출발점이라고 볼 수 있는 Chomky & Halle(1968)의 적용원칙(Simultaneous application theory)은 많은 일반성을 놓치고 있는 이론이며 그 이론을 수정하여 제시한 Anderson(1974)의 수정 동시적용 규약(Revised Simultaneous Application Convention)역시 문제점을 많이 가지고 있다. 따라서 이러한 문제점들을 검토하여 보면 이 이론들을 규칙 적용의 범어적(universal)양식으로 취하기에는 부적당하다는 결론에 이른다. 그러므로, 규칙들은 한 번 적용이 되고 난 도출형(output)에 재적용(reapply)될 수 있도록 반복적용(iterative application)이 허용되어야 할 것이다. 반복 적용하면서 모든 규칙들은 오른쪽에서 왼 쪽으로(left-wad)혹은 왼 쪽에서 오른 쪽으로(rightward), 예측 가능한 방향을 가진다는 사실이 범어적으로 입증된다. 그런데 이를 증명하기 위해서 우선 고정결정소(fixed determinant)와 닻 내림(anchoring)의 개념을 정의하는 것이 필요해진다. 고정결정소란 규칙이 적용되는 과정중에 변화소(focus)에 영향을 주면서 계속 고정된 위치에 남아 있는 결정소(determinant)를 말한다. 또한 닻 내림이라는 용어는 Strauss(1980)로 부터 원래 그가 사용했던 것과는 차이를 둔 채 개념만을 도입하였다. 따라서 Howard(1972)가 동시 적용을 해야 한다고 보았던 경우들도 고정결정소에 닻을 내린다고 하는 개념을 도입하면 방향적 적용 이론(directional application theory)에서 역시 예언이 될 수 있는 것이다.;The purpose of this parer is to show that all phonological rules are applied directionally with predictability. The simultaneous application theory of Chomsky & Halle (1968) has been regarded as the starting point in the argumentations about the mode of rule application. And Anderson (1974) subsequently proposed the Revised Simultaneous Application Convention (RSAC) as a revision of the simultaneous application theory. However, the former loses many generalities and the latter contains a number of demerits. Considering the problems of both theories, we conclude that they cannot be accepted as universal theories in the mode of rule application. Therefore, iterative application must be permitted for rules to reapply to their own output. And it is universally proved that applying iteratively, rules have predictable direction namely, rightward or leftward. In order to clarify the purpose of this paper, the notion of fixed determinant and anchoring must be defined. Fixed determinant is the determinant remaining in a fixed position for several applications. The term, "anchoring" is originally mentioned by Strauss (1980), and its conception is introduced here. The cases that Howard (1972) thought to be applied simultaneously are, in fact, anchored to the fixed determinants. So if the notion of anchoring is introduced, these cases can be also explained in the directional application theory.
