Paul Hindemith의 "Das Marienleben"에 관한 분석적 연구

Abstract

현대 독일 음악에 중요한 위치를 차지하고 있는 Paul Hindemith의 음악은 그 선율양식이나 음악형태에 있어서 독창적이다. 초기에 그는 Johann Sebastian Bach(1685∼1750)로의 복귀 움직임과 당시의 Ferruccio Benvenuto Busoni(1866∼1924)와 Max Reger(1873∼1916)에 의해 실천되었던 새로운 객관주의의 영향을 받았다. 그의 음악은 직선적이며 각 음들의 화성관계에 있어서 자유롭게 이동하는데 이것은 Bach에 비해 다소 현대적이기 때문에 때때로 부조화적이고 무조적인 것처럼 들린다. 한편, 그의 음악의 특징은 독특한 음조로 인하여 다른 곡들과 대조를 이루는데, 그의 악곡이 다른 곡들과 뚜렷이 구별되는 점은 곡을 구성하는 선율의 특성이다. 또한 그의 음악에서 리듬은 육중하고 불규칙적으로 강약이 들어가 있으며 갑작스럽게 나타나는 주제로 특징지워지며 때로는 빠르고, 몹시 참신하며 매우 길기도 하다. 그의 음악세계에 있어서 전달되는 분위기는 차분하고 외로워지며 깊은 호기심과 나직이 감싸오는 듯한 감정으로 쌓여서 매우 독특하다. 그가 사용한 양식은 근본적으로 대위법적이고 불협화음적인 음의 운동이 많으며 일정한 조로 시작하고 끝나는 것으로 보아 근본적으로 조성이 있으나, 조성은 곡이 시작할 때와는 거리가 멀고 개념이 흐릿하며, 음색이 명료함은 19세기 이전의 양식을 포함한 넓은 의미에서 신바로크와 중세의 요소가 특히 강한 신고전주의이다. 본 논문에서 다룬 그의 이론의 특징은 1937년에 발표된「The Craft of Musical Composition」의 중요 내용을 요약한 것이며 분석 작품으로 선택한 「Das Marienleben」은 1923년에 작곡하여 그의 이론이 발표된 후인 1948년 개작한 작품이다. 이 논문에서 다룬 내용중 중요한 사항을 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 15곡의 Song Cycle의 형식은 1곡, 3곡, 6곡, 12곡, 13곡, 15곡에서 사용된 ABA'의 3부분형식이 지배적이다. 둘째, 화성적으로는 4도구성화음, 5도구성화음, 7화음, 3화음등이 다양하게 나타나며 중세의 특징적 요소인 선법이 사용되고 있다. 셋째, 선율적으로는 4도와 5도간격, 반음계를 주로 사용하여 도약과 순차진행을 평형시켰다. 이러한 기법들은 그의 작품에서 특유한 언어양식을 통해 일관성있고 설득력있게 전개됨을 볼 수 있다.;The music of Paul Hindemith, who takes an important place in German contemporary music, is creative in melodic style and musical form. Early in his career, he was influenced by the "new objectivism" practiced by Busoni and Reger and the movement "back to Bach". His music is basically contrapuntal and sounds dissonant. Since he starts and ends with a definite key his music could be said to be tonal, but his modification departs far away from the original key and thus his music sounds tonally ambiguous. On the other hand, by its characteristic tonality, his music is contrasted to others', and a factor that distinguishes his music is its melodic character. It is heavy, irregular in metre, and notable for the sudden appearance of themes. Sometimes it is fast and long with a touch of novelty. The mood portrayed by his musical world is notably calm, lonesome, deeply curious and unobtrusively comfortable. Looking back to the style before the 19th century, his music could be described as Neo-Baroque or Neo-Classical with a strong Middle-Age character in its clarity of timbre. Hindemith's theory dealt in this study is a summary of his theoretical work, "The Craft of Musical Composition". "Das Marienleben", the work chosen for analysis, was originally composed in 1923 and was reworked in 1948, after his theoretical work was published. The points to be noted in this study are the following: First, the dominant form among the 15 songs of the Song Cycle is ABA' as seen in songs 1, 3, 6, 12, 13 and 15. Second, various types of chords built on fourths and fifths, seven chords and thirds, and modes characteristic of the Middle-Ages are used. Third, the melodic line depends on leaps of fourths and fifths, chromatic scales and conjunct and disjunct progressions. In his works one can observe that such techniques are consistant1y and persuasively developed through his special musical language.
