음운규칙과 음절구조의 관계연구

Abstract

표준이론에서는 분절음(segment) 단위로 음운규칙을 기술한데 반해 이 논문의 목적은 음운규칙에 음절구조(syllable structure)를 언급함으로써 좀더 높은 단계의 일반성을 포착할 수 있음을 보이는 것이다. 규칙이 적용되어 표면구조에서 음절구조를 바꾸는 대부분의 음운규칙은 음소배열제약(phonetic constraint)을 지키기 위한 것임을 밝히고자 한다. 음절을 음운단위로 가져옴에 따라 음절구조부여규칙(syllable structure assignment rule)이 새로이 문법에 필요하게 되었다. Kahn(1976)의 음절구조부여규칙은 범어적인 것이어서 한국어에도 그대로 적용된다. 그 이외에 표면구조에서의 양음절성을 설명하기 위해서 양음절화규칙이 제시된다. 음절구조와 관련 있는 음운규칙의 구조기술(structural description)에 음절구조를 언급함으로써 음절구조가 음운규칙에 필요할 뿐만 아니라 음소배열제약이 표면구조단계에서의 음절구조제약으로 기술되어서 음운규칙의 기능 또한 음절구조와 연결된다. 음소배열제약이 역사적으로 변함에 따라 각 시대에 있어서의 음절구조가 변한다. 표면구조에서 어색한 음절구조를 갖도록 하는 음소배열제약은 차차 없어진다. 음소배열제약의 변화로 인한 음절구조에서의 변화가 곧 언어변화의 한 원인이 될 수 있다. 따라서 음절구조가 공시적인 언어현상과 역사적인 언어변화 모두에서 중요한 역할을 담당하므로, 음절은 음운론에 필요한 단위임을 알 수 있다.;The purpose of this paper is to show that the phonological rules can achieve higher generalization and can be simpler in description by assigning syllable structure to them. Also it is to show that most phonological rules, that can produce changed syllable structures as outputs, are the results of preserving phonotactic constraints. Syllable Structure Assignment (SSA) Rules are necessary in grammar to accept syllable as a phonologically significant construction. Being language-universal, Kahn's (1976) SSA Rules Ⅰ-Ⅱ can be applied to Korean language directly. In addition, SSA Rule Ⅲ, which is an ambisyllabicity rule, is presented to explain the ambisyllabicity in surface structure. It is necessary to assign syllable structure to the structural description of the phonological rule that is relevant to syllable structure. As the phonotactic constraint is stated in terms of the syllable structure constraint on surtace structure, the function of phonological rules also is associated with syllable structure. Syllable structure is changed as phonetic constraint's change historically. The phonetic constraint that imposes the ask ward syllable structure disappears gradually. Language is changed according to the syllable structure change that is produced by the change in phonetic constraint. As syllable structure plays a very significant role in synchronic language phenomena and also in diachronic language change, syllable is a phonologically necessary unit.
