(The) female roles in Blake's myth

Abstract

Blake의 예언자적 비젼은 그의 신화를 통해서 현재의 인간세계를 타락한 세계로 조명하며, 인간의 내재적 가능성에 의한 구원을 궁극적 목표로 한다. 특히 인성의 4단계 - Eden, Beulah, Generation, Ulro - 로서 구성되는 심리적 우주관은 각 단계마다 여성의 역할을 특징적으로 제시한다. Songs of Experience는 부정적 여성들을 통해 인간의 타락한 Generation의 현실을 묘사한다. 즉 모태로서의 자연(Mother Nature)은 인간을 오감에 구속하고, 숙명적 삶의 조건을 이루며, 영원한 동정녀(Virgin Mother)는 사랑을 은폐하고 억압하여 왜곡된 사랑의 현실을 초래한다. 반면에 Beulah를 묘사하는 Songs of Innocence에서 이들은 자상한 모태 또는 결혼을 성취한 여성으로 등장하여 평화와 사랑의 인간현실을 이루게 된다. 그러나 그들은 사실상 본능과 무의식, 또는 감상주의적인 화평을 제공할 뿐 결국 인간을 지상의 현실에 머물게 한다. 여기서 Blake는 인간의 궁극적 낙원을 회복할 새로운 방향을 제시하게 되는데, 이때 긍정적 역할을 하는 여성들이 등장한다. Visions of the Daughters of Albion에서의 Oothon등은 그들의 욕망에 따른 性해방을 통해서 "쾌락적 묵시"의 주체가 되어, 성해방과 무한한 쾌락이 인간의 감각을 확산시키고 영원한 인성을 회복할 수 있게 된다고 역설한다. 이같은 "쾌락의 묵시"는 이들 여성이 처하게 된 딜레마가 극복되는 순간에 낙원으로 연결된다. The Marriage of Heaven and Hell은 변증법적 대립을 통한 궁극적 인성을 제시하는데, 이때 여성들은 욕망, 쾌락, 다산 등의 영역에 귀속되는 상징적 역할을 통해 존재하게 된다. 이때, Eden은 세속적인 남·녀의 분리를 초월하는 만큼 여성의 역할은 불분명해진다. 특히 Blake 신화에 나타나는 이들 여성의 의미는 그들이 구체적 여성으로 보다는 어느 인간에게서도 나타날 수 있는 심리상태를 반영한다는 상징성에서 강조된다.;William Blake regards the present human world as the fallen world, in which his prophetic vision awakens man to the inward possibility to regenerate the original human Eternity. Especially Blake shows the psychological universe which consist of the four states of Being--Eden, Beulah, Generation, Ulro-- describing the characteristic female roles in each state. Songs of Experience expresses the fallen world, Generation, under the control of the negative females. One is Mother Nature who binds man in his five sense experiences, and dominates man as the Cycle of Destiny. The other is Virgin-Mother who causes man to make unsatisfactory emotional relationships based on perverted and restricted sexuality. Their roles are changed in Beulah, the earthly paradise, which Songs of Innocence describes. They are the benevolent mother nature and the female whose love is satisfied in marriage. But at best they provide man only with the surface-peace which is possible in the level of the emotionalism and instinctiveness. Here Blake suggests the positive turning point toward Eden which is achieved by Oothoon in the Visions of the Daughters of Albion and other females. They follow their sexual desire and experience the free and happy love by which they become to know that the infinite sensual enjoyments enlarge man's five senses and eventually direct Man towards the unity of Eden. When their revealed dilemma is fully solved, their "Apccalypse of sensual enjoyment" achieves the vision of Eden, which the Marriage of Heaven and Hell describes through the Dialectics of Contraries of which the females show the symbolic roles of Desire, Energy and the Prolific. Especially in Eden the females are less distinct because it transcends the earthly division of male and female. By this whole story it is clear that the females in Blake's Myth are emphasized not as the actual beings but as the symbols of Man's fallen state of mind.
