W. Stevens의 "The Central poetry" 연구

Abstract

It is remarkable to find in Stevens' Poems that there is always the continuous pursuit toward 'the central poetry'. By 'the central poetry' stevens means the poetry which can have a insight into reality and therefore can be connected deeply with our lives. Stevens' pursuit toward 'the central poetry' is, unlike the Romantists, based on the deep acceptance of the imperfect human situations. For that reason, his poems which pursue 'the central poetry' beyond the imperfection cannot help having the conflict between the skeptical naturalism and the idealism. The pursuit toward a 'supreme fiction' in "Notes toward a Supreme Fiction" is also shown not a passive but a dynamic development in that there are continuous conflicts. Such aspect is connected with Stevens' irrational view of the relation between reality and imagination. He shows the belief in the harmonious moment between the imagination and the substantial reality, through the continuous connection between the imagination and the phenomenal reality. Therefore, if we mean the 'fiction' by the fictive fabrication, his 'supreme fiction' has the aspect beyond the 'fiction' through the 'fiction'. I name this non-fictive-fiction as the 'concord-fiction' by the term F. Kermode used. Stevens' poetry can be categorized as the poetry with the epistemological problem which wants to reveal the substantial reality. But the epistemological pursuits of the poetry arrive at the ironical situation that any epistemological pursuits of the poetry cannot get the idea of the substantial reality. Therefore, the value of the epistemological poetry is in the various and conflicting pursuits toward the substance rather than in the capability of revealing the substance. Stevens' epistemological poetry can be also esteemed according to the aspect of which his poems show the seriousness of the pursuit. But I cannot but mention the weak point of his poems; none of his poems can show the 'supreme fiction' itself as 'the central poetry'. Because his poems have the abstractness restricted in the act of the mind. Neverthless, his poems may deserve a high estimation through the serious pursuits toward the possibility of 'the central poetry'.;W. Stevens의 시에서 보여주는 커다란 특징으로서는, 'the central poetry'를 추구하는 인식론적인 것이라고 할 수 있겠다. Stevens의 'the central poetry'라는 개념은, 인식론적인 시적 추구에 있어서의 이상적인 시를 일컫는 것이다. 즉 인식주체인 imagination과 인식 객체인 reality사이의 조화로운 관계를 통하여, 인간의 imaginationdl 사물의 reality를 가능한한 있는 그대로 드러내고자 하는 시이다. 본 논문에서는 위와 같은 Stevens의 특징인 "Notes toward a Supreme Fiction"에서 가장 잘 나타나 있다고 보았다. 왜냐하면 reality와 imagination의 관계를 반복적으로 다루는 다른 시들에 비교해 볼 때, "Notes toward a Supreme Fiction"에서는 reality와 imagination이 조화를 이루는 'the central poetry'가 과연 어떠한 것인가에 대한 근본적이 모색을 하고 있기 때문이다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 "Notes toward a Supreme Fiction"이 지니는 중요성을 살펴 보기 위하여 "Notes toward a Supreme Fiction" 이전과 이후의 몇몇시를 살펴 보았다. 다음으로는, 'the central poetry'로서의 'supreme fiction'을 추구하는 "Notes toward a Supreme Fiction"이 어떻게 전개되어 있는지를 시 자체를 통하여 살펴 보았다. "Notes toward a Supreme Fiction"은, reality와 imagination사이의 갈등에도 불구하고 그 사이의 조화를 이루고자 하는 계속적인 추구로써 보여진다. 결국 이러한 추구를 통하여 얻어진 'supreme fiction'의 세계는 reality와 imagination이 시적언어 속에서 조화를 이룰수 있으리라는 비이성적인 신념의 세계로 나타난다. 마지막으로 비이성적인 신념의 세계로서 'supreme fiction'은 과연 어떠한 세계인가를 살펴 보았다. 'supreme fiction'의 특성으로는, 'fiction'을 허구라는 말과 연관시켜 볼 때 fiction이면서 fiction이 아니라는 이율배반성을 지적할 수 있겠다. 왜냐하면 'supreme fiction'이 결국 reality자체를 표현하지는 못한다는 점에서 보면 시인의 imagination에 의한 'fiction'이라고 할수 있지만, reality와 imagination이 조화를 이루어 새로운 reality를 표현해 준다는 점에서 보면 단순한 'fiction'의 단계를 넘어서기 때문이다. 사물의 reality를 가능한한 있는 그대로 드러내고자 하는 인식론적인 시의 추구는, 결국 사물의 reality를 그대로 드러내지는 못할 것이라는 역설적인 인식에 도달하게 된다. 따라서 인식론적인 시의 가치는 reality를 얼마나 잘 드러내고 있는가 하는 점 보다는, 본질적인 reality를 향한 다양하고 긴장된 추구 자체에서 온다고 할 수 있겠다. "Notes toward a Supreme Fiction"을 중심으로 한 W. Stevens의 시 세계 역시 그러한 관점에서 평가될 수 있을 것이다. 왜냐하면 'the central poetry'로서의 'supreme fiction'의 가능성을 추구하는 Stevens의 시 세계는 그 추구 과정에서 나타난 다양하고 진지한 시적 표현에 의하여 우리의 삶에 풍부하고 진실된 활력을 느끼게 해 주기 때문이다.
