A Study of G.B.Shaw's creative evolution in back to methuselah adn Don Juan in hell scene

Abstract

본 논문은 Man and Superman(1903) 3막 Hell Scene과 Back to Methuselah(1921)를 중심으로 G. B. Shaw의 Creative Evolution 사상을 연구하고자 한다. 극을 통해 사회의 모순을 제거하고 더 나은 세계를 구축하고자 했던 Shaw는 제1차 세계대전 등의 역사적 사건을 경험하면서, 현대인들이 진보적 의지인 Life Force를 인식하지 못한채 無知와 미성숙으로 인해 파멸로 치닫고 있다고 생각했다. 이에 그는 Life Force를 원동력으로 하는 Creative Evolution 사상을 하나의 종교로 제시해, 그들로 하여금 더 나은 사회를 건설할 것을 촉구했다. 인간의 내부에 존재하는 神的자각, 神性을 깨닫고, 총명한 지력을 사용함으로써 무한히 개선되어 神의 경지에까지 도달해야 한다는 그의 Creative Evolution 사상은 인간이 진보에의 신념을 가지고 꾸준히 노력할 것을 촉구했다는데 그 의의가 있다. Creative Evolution 과정은 Life Force를 인식하고 시행착오를 겪으며 발달의 단계를 거쳐 지고의 이상적인 상태에 이를 것을 목표로 한다. Shaw는 시행착오를 겪는 현대인과 그 사회를 신랄하게 풍자하는 동시에, 이에서 벗어나 발전하는데 무엇보다도 지성이 요구됨을 역설했다. 또한 물질을 초월한 영혼의 삶을 갈구하는 Back to Methuselah 제5부의 Ancients를 가장 이상적인 인물로 제시했다. 그는 Ancients를 통해 물질만능주의에 젖어있는 현대인에게 좀 더 가치있는 정신적인 生의 추구로 전환할 것을 강조한 것이다. 사실 Shaw가 제시한 정신적 삶의 추구는 극도로 물질화된 오늘날의 사회에 절실히 요구되는 것이라 생각된다.;This is a study of Creative Evolution which Shaw describes in Back to Methuselah and in the third act of Man and Superman. George Bernard Shaw(1856-1950), the greatest figure in English drama, tried throughout his life to abolish absurdities in society and to ascend the social conditions, using his plays as the media of demonstrating his thoughts. During his life, especially after the World War I, Shaw found the danger of human ignorance which eventually brought the destruction of human culture. He thought this generation so immature because they did not recognized the Life Force, a progressive force of life, that men are enslaved by the matter, only to have self-indulgence. Shaw presents to this generation the need of Creative Evolution with Life Force. Satiring the aspects of decaying civilization, Shaw describes his symbolic ideal way of life in the fifth act of Back to Methuselah where Superman reach to the state of a god. The Ancients desire for the world of pure thought. This implies that men must pursue the omnipotence and omniscience, greater power and greater knowledge so as to be freed from the life of matter. Shaw insists that Man should strive to realize the divinity within himself and be created Superman with his own "vital will" by the continued development of the Life Force through the Creative Evolution. In the first chapter, I have traced Shaw's philosophy of "Life Force". In the second chapter, I have traced the process of "Trial and Error". In the third chapter, I have studied the "Longevity" and the step of "Development" and at last I have studied the "Ancients" who are the ideal humankind which Shaw described as far as his thought could reach. Shaw takes thought and spiritual strength as the most important thing for modern man and society. Creative Evolution, belief in man's spiritual strength and Life Force, has the meaning in that it tries to give modern man and society, that has no God and no belief, the belief of progress with their will and mental attitude.
