T. S. Eliot 批評의 硏究

Abstract

Thomas Stearns Eliot은 현대시 뿐만 아니라 비평에 있어서도 큰 영향력을 발휘해왔다. 그의 비평관을 고찰해보면 시기별로 큰 변화를 보이고 있으며 경우에 따라 일관성이 결여되어 보이는 부분도 없지 않다. 그러나 변화라기 보다는 발전적 차원에서의 the poet-critic으로 그를 이해해야 할 필요성이 있다. 여기에 한가지 더, Eliot를 긍정적으로 이해하려는 노력으로 제안될 수 있는 것이 그가 사용하고 있는 몇가지 중요한 개념들에 대한 고찰이다. Eliot가 생각하고 있는바 이상적인 시인의 詩作과정을 살펴보면, 시인은 'emotion'과 'feeling'이라는 두가지 경험을 통합된 감수성('unified sensibility')으로 시인의 知的 思考('thought')와 결합시키되 그것을 객관적 상관물('the objective correlative')의 상태로 만들어야 하는 것임을 알 수 있다. 여기서 중요한 전제가 되는 것은 전통의식을 통한 시인의 몰개성('impersonality')이라고 할 수 있으며, 이 외에도 'order'나 'unity'의 개념은 詩作에 있어서나 비평활동에 있어서 Eliot가 끊임없이 추구한 문제였다. 여기서 추출된 이들 개념들을 고찰해볼 때 Eliot의 비평은, 시를 단순히 한 개인의 감정적 산물로서가 아닌, 'emotion', 'feeling', 'thought'의 3위일체적인 하나의 'unity'로서, 그리고 한 시인의 전체적인 경험의 객관적 등가물로서 파악하게 하는 기능적 구실을 하며, 결국 시인이 표현하고자 하는 감정을 독자들은 어떻게 전달받을 수 있을 것인가에, 그리고 시인은 건강한 사회를 대변하려면 어떻게 시를 써야 하는가에 그 중요한 쟁점이 있는 것으로 결론지을 수 있다.;Thomas Stearns Eliot has greatly influenced not only on the 20th century English poetry but also on criticism. Throughout his critical writings, a change and even incoherence are detected according to the period he wrote them. However, Eliot deserves to be treated as the poet-critic, since the change can be regarded as development. The purpose of this thesis is to study his several critical conceptions analytically for the positive understanding of him. What Eliot thinks to be the ideal process of poem-making is that the poet must fuse his own emotion, feeling, and thought with 'unified sensibility,' and then he must find 'the objective correlative.' In this 'active, intensive process,' the important precondition is poet's impersonality through his historical sense, especially in literature. 'Latin Tradition.' Also he pursues persistantly 'order' and 'unity.' On close study of these conceptions mentioned above, Eliot's critical mind provides us with available suggestion that poetry is not a mere expression of poet's individual emotion, but a trinity of emotion, feeling, and thought in accordance with his whole experience. In conclusion, it can be pointed that throughout his criticism he puts much emphasis on the problem of how the reader can communicate with the poet's emotion, and of how the poet can represent the healthy society.
