(The) Portrait of a lady와 the wings of the dove를 통해본 Henry James의 道德觀

Abstract

Henry James는 인간의 내면세계를 탐구하여 그것을 묘사 극화함으로써 삶의 보편적인 진리에 접근해 보고자 심혈을 기울였다. 그런데 그에게 있어 인간의 내면세계 다시 말해서 인간의 심리에 대한 탐색은 내면의식내에서의 선악의 문제가 그 중심이 되고 있다. 따라서 삶의 도덕적 측면에 대한 관심이 그의 작품세계의 핵심을 이루고 있다. James는 Walter Besant와의 논쟁적 평론인 The Art of Fiction에서 문학이 교훈적이든가, 아니면 오락적이어야 한다는 Besant의 소설론에 반론을 제기하였다. 그는 예술 작품의 도덕성이 그 작품의 표면에 직접 나타나는 것을 원치 않았다. James는 작가의 도덕의식은 예술 작품속에 총체적 효과로서 성취되어야 한다는 확신을 가지고 있었다. 인간관계속에서의 인간의 도덕적인 경험을 다루는 일이 소설의 중심적인 과제가 되어야 한다고 생각한 James는 국제상황주제(International Theme)라는 방편속에서 그 가능성을 찾고 있다. 그는 이를 통해 두 개의 서로 다른 문화와 가치관이 관계를 맺게 될 때 야기되는 상반된 이해관계의 충돌을 다룸으로써 보다 광범위하고 포괄적인 삶을 표현하고자 했다. 그 삶이란 곧 대립되는 인물들의 갈등의 고통을 통해 도덕적 성찰에 도달하게 되는 내면의식의 삶이었다. James는 작품속의 주인공으로 하여금 인생의 경험 현장에 들어가게 한다. 거기서 그를 둘러싸고 있는 악과 최고의 도덕을 구별할 수 있는 훈련을 시킨다. 인생의 온갖 경험을 통해서만 도덕의식이 성취될 수 있으며, 인간은 악과의 대결을 통해서만이 정신적인 승리를 획득할 수 있다고 믿는 것이 James의 도덕관이다. 그래서 그의 주요작품들은 대부분이 선과 악의 갈등을 극화한 작품이다. 처음에 순진한 상태에 놓였던 인물들이 경험의 과정을 거쳐서 인식의 상태에 도달한다는 내용을 그는 다루고 있는 것이다. 결국 그들의 도덕의식이 확대신장되어 인생의 궁극적인 승리를 얻게 된다는 것이 그의 작품의 주요골자라고 하겠다. 그러므로 본고에서는 James의 도덕의식을 확연하게 부각시키는 두 작품 즉 The Portrait of a Lady와 The Wings of the Dove를 통하여 James가 해석하고 있는 내면세계의 도덕문제를 살펴보았다.;Herrry James is a novelist who did his utmost to approach the universal truth of life by exploring the inner world of man, and then by describing and dramatizing it. As far as his exploratian is concerned, it is focuses an the problem af good and evil within human cansciousness. As a result, the moral aspect af life is the main theme of most af his works. In The Art of Fiction which is known as a critical essay against Walter Besant, James, shows his strong agreement with Besant's insistence an instruction and amusement in literature. He rejects the direct exposition of morality in artistic works and affirms that the exposition of the author's moral cansciousness should be achieved in a whole fashion. Dealing with moral experience in human relationship as his main subject, he found the possibility af expressing it by means af an "international theme". In this way, he intended to show a more broad and comprehensive picture af life by describing the conflict of opposite interests in the relationship of two different cultures and values. He portrayed the inner conscious life leading to his characters' moral awareness through their various conflicts. In his works, James had his characters face their reality and thereby distinguish between the evil and the ultimate morality surrounding them. James's view of morality is that moral consciousness can be achieved only through various experiences in life. It is only in coping with evil that an individual is led to moral achievement. Therefore his major works are considered to be dramatizations of this conflict between good and evil. The innocent hero or heroine going through such experiences is brought to this new state of moral awareness. That their enlarged moral consciousness enables them to achieve the ultimate triumph of life is the central theme of his works. Therefore through this analysis of The Portrait of a Lady and The Wings of the Dove which clearly manifest James's moral consciousness, the author will study the inner moral problem that James intended to explore.
