言語記述에 있어서의 Q와 WH의 役割

Abstract

추상적 요소인 Q를 기술하는 것이 처음 대두된 것은 Katz and Postal(1964)의 An Integrated Theory of Linguistic Descriptions(1964)에서 였다. 이행적 해석을 가진 그들의 Q는 변형은 의미를 보존해야 한다는 가정을 따르기 위해 의문문이 기저 구조에 자리잡았다. 그후에 Baker(1970)는 Q는 의문화되는 하나 이상의 명사구를 묶는 기능이 있는 operator라고 제안했다. 그러나 Bresnan(1970)과 Akmajian(1975)은 Q를 that나 for-to같은 보문소로 간주했다. Langacker(1974)같은 언어학자는 언어의 통사적 분석에서 Q의 필요성 조차 부인했다. 이 논문에서 필자는 추상적 구성물인 Q가 2가지 기능, 즉 기저구조에서 의문문을 다른 문장과 구별하는 의미적 기능과 의문문 억양을 부과하는 음운론적 기능의 두 가지를 가졌다는 사실을 증명하려고 시도했다. 또 다른 추상적 요소인 의문대명사와 관계 대명사의 분석에서 모두 일어나는 WH에 관해서는 필자는 의문문 WH와 관계문 WH는 구별되어야 한다고 주장한다. 즉 전자는 [-Definite]로 표시되고, 후자는 [+Definite]로 표시된다. 더 나아가서 필자는 whether은 다른 의문문 WH와 구별되어야 한다는 결론에 도달하게 된다.;The description of the abstract element Q first appeared in Katz and Postal's An Integrated Theory of Linguistic Descriptions(1964). Their Q with a performative reading was posited in the deep structure of an interrogative sentence to follow the hypothesis that transformations are meaning-preserving. Thereafter, Baker(1970) proposes Q as an operator, its function binding one or more noun phrases to be questioned. Bresnan(1970) and Akmajian(1975), however, regard Q as a complementizer like that or for-to. A linguist like Langacker(1974) denies even the necessity of Q in syntactic analysis of Languages. In this paper, I attempted to prove that the abstract construct Q has dual functions : the semantic function distinguishing question sentences from other sentences in deep structure, and the phonological function inducing the question intonation. As to another abstract element WH which occurs in the analysis of both interrogative words and relative pronouns, I mainatained that the interrogative WH and relative WH should be distinguished, the former being marked 〔-Definite〕, and the latter 〔+Definite〕. I further reached the conclusion that whether had to be distinguished from other interrogative elements.
