Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the difference in the way of child rearing practices among mothers in different social stratifications. Furthermore, this study is to ascertain the recent changes made in the child roaring practices and its socialization process compared with the study made in 1959. The main part of this study is concentrated on the variation of basic socialization such as feeding, weaning, toilet training, sleeping arrangement, independence training, father attitudes for children, and parents' aspirations toward children. The means used in this research is limited to Purposive sampling picking respective 100 mothers from lower class and middle class who live in Seoul. The results of this study are as follows. The type and period of feeding and weaning practiced in lower class is similar to the practices of ten years ago. On the other hand the same practices in the middle class show a relative changes. The toilet training both in the lower and middle classes is slow as shown in the practices of ten years ago. The infants in the lower class are very much left themselves in disciplining. But in case of mistakes they are usually punished. On the other hand, mothers in the middle class tolerate them taking child oriented-policy. Mothers in the lower class use same room with their children because of lacking bed rooms. Mothers in the middle class keep their children in a separated bed room. Mothers in the lower class seem to promote a dependent condition in the parent-child relationship. Mothers in the middle class consciously strive to train the independent spirit of the children. Fathers' attitudes toward children are usually generous both in lower and middle classes. Mothers in the lower class preserve human, and traditional values ; mothers in the middle class pursue rational and goal-oriented values. Conventional attitudes such as predominance of man over woman scorn to remain both in the lower and middle classes. In conclusion, I have found that child roaring practices and parents' aspirations toward children manifest differences according to the different social stratification.
