Max Weber의 社會學 方法論 硏究

Abstract

The significance of Weber's methodology consists in illuminating the fundamental problems of scientific knowledge : its nature, limits and possibilities. This study attempts to analyse and evaluate the theoretical structure of Weber's methodology with special reference to his verstehen(understanding). It discusses the nature and the explanatory power of his method of understanding and its relevance to the generation of scientific knowledge. Chapter 1 presents the necessity and the purpose of this study. Chapter 2 discusses the historical development of the notion of understanding presented by Droysen, Dilthey, Rickert and Simmel, Chapter 3 deals with the nature of Max Weber's own method of understanding : its fundamental concepts and premises, understanding of social action and social structure and its relationship with scientific causal explanation. Chapter 4 analyses his methodological principles revealed in his substantive works, especially in The,Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism. Chapter 5 deals with the critics of understanding from the positivists and phenomenologists' perspective, and evaluates its usefulness as a scientific method. Chapter 6 summarizes the characteristics of Weber's method of understanding and concludes as follows : First, his verstehen is not dependent exclusively on subjective, personal understanding, but is capable of explaining the structural dimension of social phenomena through the ideal type. Second, Weber has intended to bring the mental or speculative strain of verstehen within social scientific enterprise, and he attempts to go beyond a mere philosophical rationale by relating it to causal explanation. It is Weber who, for the first time, has developed verstehen as a scientific method in the social sciences.;Max Weber의 社會學 方法論은 그것이 單純한 調査의 技術이나 資料分析에 관한 技術이 아니고 科學的 知識에 있어서의 根本的인 問題點들 즉 그 特性, 限界點, 可能性들을 다루고 있는 것이라는 點에서 硏究해 볼 만한 意義와 重要性이 있다. 그의 方法論은 價値自由, 價値 適合性, 因果關係의 說明, 理解的 方法등의 問題로 구분하여 論議하고 있으나, 本 論文에서는 理解的 方法이라는 主題에 焦點를 맞추어 그 思想的 흐름 속에서 Weber의 方法論的 眼目을 體系的으로 論議해 보고자 하였다. Weber는 自然現象의 경우와는 달리 社會的 現象에 대한 우리의 關心은 現象의 抽象的인 一般性보다는, 個別的인 獨特性에 集中되므로 社會科學의 目標는 우리가 움직이고 있는 社會的 實體의 性質의 獨特性을 理解하는 것이라고 主張한다. 그는 이러한 社會的 現象의 特性에 接近하기 위해서는 理解라는 獨特한 主觀的 活動이 必須的이라고 보았으며 社會的 現象은 人間 行爲에 대한 이러한 理解의 可能性을 통해서 만이 정확히 把握될 수 있는 것으로 보았다. 本 硏究의 目的은 Weber가 主張하고 있는 이러한 理解的 方法이 社會的 理象을 說明하는 데 얼마나 適合하며 社會現象에 接近하는 데 있어서 이러한 方法의 意義는 무엇인가 하는 것을 살펴 보고자 하는 것이다. 그리고 이러한 것을 살펴봄에 있어 硏究의 範圍를 Weber의 理論에만 局限시키지 않고 理解的 方法이라는 社會科學方法의 全般的인 흐름 속에서 그의 方法論의 獨特性을 찾아 보고자 하였으며, 그의 理論的 主張이 現象에 관한 實際的인 硏究에서 어떻게 適用되고 있는가를 具體的으로 살펴보고자 하였다. 이러한 Weber의 理解的 方法의 焦點은 個別的인 社會的 行爲에 대한 理解라는 것에 맞추어져 있으며, 社會的 現象에 관한 說明은 行爲者가 他人들과 相互志向하는 가운데 그들의 行爲에 賦與한 意味의 理解를 基礎로 하여서만 可能하다고 主張한다. 이와 같은 그의 理解的 方法은 科學的인 因果關係의 說明과 對立되는 것은 아니며 因果的인 說明에 의해 證明될 수 있는 것으로 생각된다. 따라서 Weber의 社會學은 社會的 行爲의 意味를 해석적으로 理解하려 하며, 또 그럼으로써 그 社會的 行爲의 經過 및 結果를 因果的으로 說明하는 學問이라 할 수 있다. 이러한 理解의 槪念은 Weber에게서 獨創的으로 생긴 것은 아니며 Droysen, Dilthey, Rickert, Simmel등의 思想的 傳統을 통해 Weber에게 이어졌으며, 最近에 이르러서는 現象學的 社會學에 의해 새로이 社會科學的 方法으로 脚光을 받게 되었다. 最近 社會學에 이러한 理解的 方法이 다시금 脚光을 받게 되는 것은 社會科學 全般에서 일어나고 있는 實證主義的 方法에 대한 懷疑에서 비롯된 것이라 할 수 있으며, 이것은 우리가 소위 進步라고 생각해온 社會의 進行方向에 대한 一般的인 懷疑에서 또한 비롯된 것이라 할 수 있다. 理解的 方法이 個別的인 行爲의 主觀的인 意味에 대한 理解에서 出發하기 때문에 社會的 現象을 構造的인 次元에서 說明하기가 어려울 수 있으며, 또 構造的인 次元의 說明을 다루는 경우라도 個人的 水準에서 構造的 水準으로의 轉換過程이 모호하다는 것을 制 限點으로 들어 비판하는 경우가 있다. 그러나 本 論文에서 論議하고 있는 Max Weber의 方法論의 特徵은 다음과 같이 要約해 볼 수 있다. 첫째, 그는 理解에만 완전히 依存하지 않고 理念型이라는 獨特한 手段을 통하여 社會構造的 次元을 說明하고자 試圖하고 있으며, 社會現象에 관한 그의 많은 實際的인 硏究는 社會構造的인 說明까지도 可能하게 하고 있다는 事實을 찾아볼수 있다. 둘째로는 여러 學者들이 社會科學에서의 理解 槪念의 重要性에 관한 主張을 展開시켰으나 그들이 理解 槪念의 哲學的 根據를 重視한 데 반하여, Weber는 그보다는 理解를 科學의 境界內에 導入하는 데 重點을 두었으며, 그에 이르러서 비로소 하나의 科學的 方法論으로의 發展이 可能하게 되었다.
