Daniel Deronda에 나타난 유태사회의 상징적 의의

Abstract

George Eliot의 마지막 작품으로 남게된 Daniel Deronda는 그동안 문제작이라는 평판아래 세상으로부터 빛을 받지 못하였다. 이러한 물의는 Daniel Deronda 안의 두 plot, 즉 영국사회를 중심으로 한 Gwendolen plot과 Jewish plot이 통합적이지 못하다는 견해에서 연유되었다. 현대에 이르러서야 Daniel Deronda를 재조명하고자 하는 움직임이 보이나 그 노력들의 초점은 realism의 극치인 Gwendolen plot에만 향하고 있다. 필자는 이러한 단편적인 이해는 작품의 전체적인 이해를 왜곡한 것으로 보고 작품의 유기적인 이해를 위하여 그 동안 각광받지 못한 Jewish plot에 내포된 주제적 특질들을 밝히고자 한다. 서론에서는 작품의 unity를 문제삼아온 비평들을 고찰해보고 특히 Jewish plot의 이질적인 요소와 개연성을 문제시한 비평들을 주목해 본다. Elot은 독자를 자기중심적인 좁은 세계에서 타인을 헤아리고 자신을 에워싼 넓은 세상을 인식하는 경지에 이끌고자 의도적으로 유태사회를 소개하였다고 밝히며 Jewish plot을 옹호하고 있다. 필자는 독자의 상상력을 일깨워주고자 한 Eliot의 이러한 노력에 근거하여 Jewish plot 은 realism 으로 그려졌기 보다는 romance, allegory의 차원에서 다루어지고 있다고 주장한다. 그리하여 Eliot 이 지향한 유기적 공동체라는 이상사회가 Jewish plot에 의하여 상징되어지며 개연성이 없다고 지적받는 초자연적인 요소들을 오히려 독자의 상상력을 유도하는 역할을 하고 있다고 주장한다. Ⅰ장에서는 Eliot이 비판하고자 한 영국사회의 부패된 가치들을 그린 Gwendolen의 결혼에 이르기까지의 이야기를 살펴본다. 영국사회의 허무주의, 도덕의 마비정도는 Gwendolen이 자신의 도덕적 양심을 절대악의 상징인 Grandcourt에게 넘겨주고 그와 결혼함으로써 절정에 이른다. Ⅱ장에서는 유기사회를 대변한 유태사회의 상징적 의의를 조명하고자 했다. 유태인의 역사에서는 남다른 민족에 대한 공동체 의식을 살필 수 있으며 정신적인 구심점으로서 인류공동체에 기여하고자 한 그들의 열망에서 Eliot이 지향한 유기사상의 확장된 모습을 고찰할 수 있다. 한편 Mordecai의 vision을 통하여 현실을 변화시키며 인간에게는 무한한 가능성을 일깨워주는 상상력과 믿음의 영역이 소개된다. Ⅲ장에서는 작품의 이상사회는 결국 현실사회와 관계를 맺지 못한다며 작품의 결말을 문제삼아온 견해들에 반박하고자 한다. 필자는 Daniel을 이상을 현실로 연결시켜주는 실천적 힘으로 파악하고 있다. Daniel이라는 한 개인에 의하며 vision이 Gwendolen이라는 다른 개인 안에 심어지고 그 내적 변화를 일으키는 관계에서 이상이 현실을 변화시키는 구체적인 과정을 살펴본다. 한편 영국사회와 같은 문제를 안은 현실은 외부에서는 Daniel로 대변되는 이상의 힘에 의하여, 내부에서는 작은 개선의 힘으로 역사에 참여하고자 하는 Gwendolen과 같은 개인에 의하여 구원될 수 있는 것이다. 결론적으로, 필자는 작품을 통합시켜주는 구조적인 역할은 인류 공동체를 통합시켜줄 영역들이 내포된 유태사회의 plot에 있다고 본다. 유태사회의 상징적 의미를 깨닫는 것은 작품이해의 근본적인 작업이며 이에 의하여 통합체로서의 작품을 구상한 Eliot의 노력을 성공으로서 평가할 수 있게 된다.;George Eliot embarked on writing Daniel Deronda in the prime of her literary career. However, Daniel Deronda can be regarded as a first book by a new author. In this work, Eliot has changed modes of writing to accommodate the realm of imagination and spirit, symbolized by the Jewish plot. Readers who couldn't perceive her venture, expressed discontent with the unrealistic, far-fetched plot. However, if we rid ourselves of our biases of Eliot as only as a realistic writer and regard Daniel Deronda in a new perspective, we will be rewarded with the central idea manifested in the Jewish plot. The Jewish community is an embodiment of the organic ideal. The Romance genre deals with the search for the ideal and demands an active imagination from the reader. Once the reader has apprehended the ideal, he will gain knowledge of the veiled truth and imaginative power immanent in the real world. If we look upon the Jewish community in this light, we will realize that to insist upon the same realistic effects of the Gwendolen plot from the Jewish plot is not only narrow-minded but results in an undervaluation of it's symbolic significance. The worldy and purposeless English society is depicted in Gwendolen's narrative. Gwendolen becomes a willing part of the marriage market mechanism and sells her morality at the price of becoming Grandcourt's wife. Grandcourt, the absolute emblem of evil, shuts Gwendolen off from humanity and imprisons her in the private inferno of marriage. Daniel longs to become an organic part of society and seeks a social captainship. On his spiritual journey for the ideal task, he encounters the Jewish community, a symbolic embodiment of Eliot's organic theory. The Jews are a race which has become separated from each other to 1ive among other races under oppression. However, they have managed to keep their racial identity and a religious bond amongst themselves. The Jewish prophet, Mordecai, hopes that his race will prosper, become an independent part of the human community, and offer their spiritual binding theory to the human race acting as the heart of mankind. To achieve this goal, Mordecai envisions an executor of his ideals. The power of vision is demonstrated through Daniel's acceptance of his Jewish ancestory and his Zionist mission. Vision recreates reality accordingly to the believer's will and goes on to feed the imagination of other people. In accepting Mordecai's vision as his own, Daniel has united the realm of the ideal and of reality. Daniel also acts as a bridge between these two realms in his relationship with Gwendolen. Daniel becomes a vision of the good in the world for Gwendolen and his brotherly love enables her to become an independent moral being. Daniel becomes a savior of the human community while Gwendolen becomes an executor of the welfare and virtue in her own society. Thus, the English society can be saved by the average person's participation in society as well as by the forces of the human community. The Jewish community can be thus seen as the organic community that Eliot has held as ideal. Humanity can be saved not only through their spiritual heritage, but also through the power of imagination and faith represented by Mordecai. It is this realm that enhances the highest possibilities of humanity and ennobles the human will that overcomes the determining forces of society. Eliot has lead her readers to a vision of the large world where there remains much room for embitterment. Readers who have apprehended the visionary and spiritual power symbolized in the Jewish community will gain a positive belief in the potential of the imaginative and faithful human.
