Abstract

This thesis atempts to read Jahe Eyre by Charlotte Bronte with the viewpoint of feminist criticism, juxtaposing the double-realtionship between Jane Eyre and Bertha Mayson. The peciliarity of female literature is that feminist critics advocated can be defined as co-esistance of male-dominated aspect and unconscious aspect which might overthrow. the former. According to Elain Showalter, woman-culture is divided into two parts, one part is male-dominant culture and the other is the resisting part against it. The resisting part shows unique characteristics of female space. Therefore female writers' works should be understood as 'double-voiced discourse' which include dominant aspect and muted aspect at the same time. What Showalter insists accords with the concept of 'palimpsest' from Sandra M. Gilbert and Susan Gubar. In the male chauvinistic world, the pen is identified with the penis and the female writer are afraid of expressing their thought perfectly. The works of the female writer belong to male-centered culture, but at the same time they contain the potential power which rebel against the existing culture. So the unique characteristic of female literature is the unconscious state existing beyond the conscious state of male literature. Reintroducing these woman's unconsciousness aspect, Charlotte Brente reflects Victorian society and its conventions through her creation of Bertha Mason, a double figure who can be regarded as the inner aspect of Jane Eyre. Chpater Ⅱ of this thesis studies into the conscious filed of Jane Eyre. First, we study into English Victorian society and its sex ideology. At the core of this patriarchal order is the concept of society as an enclosure. Namely we discuss about the society that is closed to women and that which also encloses women. Also we look into the significance of Jane's position in society as a governess, a woman and an orphan. Second, we examine process of internalizing the rage and rebellion against the authority of society through Jane's socialozation as a governess. Chapter Ⅲ studies upon the unconscious file that is represented by Bertha. First, we focus upon the existence of Bertha that links with Jane's inner aspect and we draw evidence why Bertha can be regarded as Jane's double. Second, through Bertha's three attacs at Thornfiled, we examine into the unconscious force that rebels against males' power that tries to enclose a women into romantic fantasys. Third, we investigate how Jane has realized Berha's unspokable force into the moral force of womem. In Chapter Ⅳ we first examine why Charlotte Bronte has not express the force of woman normally but indirectly through Bertha's madness. Second, we observe how Charlotte Bronte has overcome the patriachial order through the ending of Jane Eyre, the marriage of Jane and Rochester. Third, we examine the social critical and feminist elements of Jaue Eyre through Charlotte Brone's view of the Victorian society. Though Charlotte Bronte was compelled to formulate her fiction from within a conventional framework, she used the device of a 'double' to deconstruct and reconstruct an old story about a woman and to represent woman as she is. As a result Charlotte Bronte criticizes the Victorian society, especially its oppressions and conditions of women through Jane and Bertha's double relationship.;Charlotte Bronte의 Jane Eyre는 Victoria 사회의 가부장적 질서와 그 안에서 억압받는 여성의 삶의 문제에 대한 날카로운 통찰력을 보여주는 소설이다. Charlotte Bronte는 주인공 Jane Eyre를 그 사회의 제도에 얽매이는 인물로 표현하는 것이 아니라, 오히려 그녀의 내면의 거울이라고 할 수 있는 분신(double)인 Bertha Mason을 통해 그 사회 제도의 모순적인 실체를 반사해 놓았다. Jane Eyre는 여성이자 고아라는 불안정한 지위로 말미암아 소외당하고 억압받는 위치에 있었지만, 오히려 그 사회 상류층를의 속물적이고 건강하지 못한 세계를 비판적으로 바라보며, 자신이 당하는 부당한 억압에 대해 분노하고 반항한다. 그러나 Jane Eyre는 붉은 방에의 감금과 Lowood의 교육 등을 겪은 후, 자신의 분노를 내면화하는데, 그 온갖 억압에 대한 분노의 총체가 Bertha Mason의 광기로 표출된다. 표면상으로 드러나는 Jane Eyre는 가부장적 억압을 받아들이는 것처럼 보이지만, 실은 Bertha Mason과 같은 분신(double)을 통하여 자신의 내면에 잠재한 반항적인 충동을 표현하는 것이다. Thornfield의 3층은 Jane Eyre가 Lowood에서 배운 rationality와 그녀 본연의 허기(hunger)와 분노(rage), 반항(rebellion)의 irrationality가 교차하는 곳이다.Jane Eyre는 마침내 가부장제의 성(castle) 자체인 Thornfield의 3층 다락방에서, Gateshead의 붉은 방에 감금되었던 Bertha Mason으로 나타나는 반역과 광란의 자아와 마주치는 것이다. Bertha Mason은 Jane Eyre의 억눌린 내면세계, 즉 Victoria사회에 대한 분노를 표출하는 또다른 자아이며, 동시에 이 시대의 사회적 시각에서는 범죄적 자아(criminal self)가 된다. Bertha Mason은 인간이기보다는 동물 같은 모습으로 등장하는데, 이것은 여성의 성은 감금되고 처벌받아야 하는 위험한 힘이라는 Victoria사회의 문화적인 태도를 나타내는 것으로 파악할 수 있다. Victoria사회는 숙녀(lady)로서의 이상형(ideal type)에 대한 위협 요소를 광기로 몰아부치는 사회이며, 특히 여성의 성욕(sexuality)은 Victioria사회 규범에 벗어나므로 여성 장인의 전형적인 특징으로 간주되는 것이다. 그런데 Bertha Mason의 광증을 보는 Charlotte Bronte의 시각은 Victoria사회의 시각과는 다르며, 오히려 Bertha Mason의 광증을 통해 한 미약한 여성으로 하여금 남성 권위가 지배하는 Victoria사회의 억압으로부터 탈출을 시도하게 한다. Charlotte Bronte는 Victoria사회의 입장에서 볼 때는 범죄적 자아인 Bertha Mason을 지하실 감옥(dungeon)이 아닌 3층 꼭대기 탑(attic)에 가두도록 설정하고 있다. 다락방(attic)은 하늘과 보다 가까운 곳으로 비상이나 구원과 연관되는 이미지를 가진다. 또한 Charlotte Bronte는 가부장적 억압의 상징인 Thornfield를 불태워 폐허로 만들고, 그 성(castle)의 성주민 Rochester를 상처 입히고 눈멀게 한다. Jane Eyre가 지닌 여성론적 요소와 사회 비평적 요소는 이러한 측면에서 드러난다. 이처럼 Charlotte Bronte는 Jane Eyre에서 Jane Eyre가 겪는 삶과 그녀의 분신(double)인 Bertha Mason의 존재를 통하여 Victoria시대 영국 사회에서 '가정의 천사'라는 이상적인 여성상을 강요하던 불합리성을 고발하고, 여성문제에 대한 새로운 시각을 제시하는데 성공한다.
