Abstract
As changes appeared in the system of Gangjin's method of producing celadon, the long-lived tradition of producing Goryeo celadon reached its end. In the era of the switching of the two dynasties from Goryeo to Joseon, artisans developed a new type of white porcelain in various shapes and designs. The model of the production of Joseon Dynasty's white porcelain lies in the period of Goryeo Dynasty, however, the exact chronology of the beginning of the production of white porcelain is still unclear. Therefore, a detailed investigation is critically needed to clarify the history of white porcelain, but it has been delayed due to the lack of reports and data from excavations. Even though many people realize the importances of identifying the change of timing in the method of production in the late Goryeo Dynasty, no one has yet mentioned a word about this topic. Much attention has been concentrated to the formation of Bunwon that produced white porcelain during the Joseon Dynasty. However, a thorough research has not be done for there are not much excavated remains and data that can clarify the hazy chronology of the white porcelain. Thus, although the transition of the two dynasties is an important issue, there are no studies on the characteristics of the late Goryeo and early Joseon pottery. The only verified chronology is the <The 24the year of Hongmu: White Porcelain Bowl> discovered at the Wolchul Hill on Geumgang Mountain, and it contains a script that the first king of Joseon Dynasty wrote: "Pottery making artisans at Bangsan..." This study investigates the Bangsan area which is situated in the eastern part of Korea, and points out that the town of Bangsan must have been the center kiln site for producing Goryeo celadon. The Ewha Womans University Museum did excavations on white porcelain kiln sites from the late Goryeo Dynasty at Bangsan, Yang-gu and Seoksu-dong, Anyang. The relics from Seoksu-dong are presumed to be produced in the same period as Bangsan's. The museum also discovered a new kiln site at Wanjangri, Mungyeong and compared its porcelain with white porcelain excavated from the aforementioned places. Shapes and designs of late Goryeo's white porcelain follow the same patterns as those of the celadon, the main pottery of Goryeo Dynasty, produced at the time. Wares, such as bowls and plates, were produced and they were widely used by everyone during the Joseon Dynasty whose political belief was based on Confucianism. Such wares were placed on top of another where either sand or clay-spurs supported each bottom, and then they were fired in the kiln. Most of the porcelain do not bear designs, and their shapes are as follows: the bottom of bowls make an angle with their sides, bowls had inner curves, and the rims of plates were either curved inward or outward. The method of production of Gangjin changed due to many Japanese invasions, and the style changed from local kilns to Gangjin style celadon, white porcelain, and buncheong wares in the 1380's. In the early period of Joseon Dynasty, white porcelain becomes a prominent figure as they are imported by China, and the people began to use gold or silver wares less and less. All of the white porcelain bore names of governmental offices where they were to be sent, and each record was written and kept at the workshops. As recorded in old scripts, the quality of the white porcelain of Gwangju, Gyeong-gi Province and Goryeong, Northern Gyeongsang Province are of the best. The kiln site at Gwangju grew very famous that it eventually became the royal kiln site. I am most interested in the relationship and the behind story of the kiln sites of Gwangju until it became a royal kiln site with other local kiln sites that were from the same period. This study analyzes characteristics and techniques of early Joseon kilns that are excavated recently; most of the studies concentrates on the period of Bunwon, where this study focuses on the characteristics of the white porcelain from the early periods of Joseon Dynasty until Bunwon was formed. When many porcelain from the same period are compared, they exhibit similar patterns, and it has been proven that artisans from the same period built temples, placenta jars, and tomb tablets in similar styles. Gwangju produced carefully fired hard type of white porcelain and after a while local kiln sites switched their styles from soft to hard type porcelain. Gwangju kiln site was unique in a sense that they produced grey porcelain that bore stamped designs and sanggam inlay, and they were all fired with saggers. Gwanju produced both porcelain and celadon even before the time it became a royal kiln. Many local kiln sites also produced white porcelain and celadon, and the quantity depended on the financial and geographical circumstances of the sites, and the quality were lower than those produced at the royal kilns. This study includes relics from excavations and remains from consuming places, such as temples and governmental offices from the late Goryeo to early Joseon Dynasty. I am sure that the research of the white porcelain of these periods will be widely done once more excavations are actively done and thus there will be more supplemental data to fulfill the gaps of the chronology of white porcelain.;강진의 요업체계의 변화로 퇴락한 청자의 전통을 잇게 되는 고려말의 도자제자 양상은 청자 의 무리 속에 백자의 활발한 제작이라는 새로운 국면을 맞게 되고 조선이 건국되자 그 진면목을 발휘하듯 다양한 기형과 문양으로 지속적으로 제작되어 조선의 대표 주자인 백자로 자리매김하게 된다.
