Abstract
Herrick이 활동했던 17세기 초반에는 16세기의 'the great chain of being'의 개념을 토대로 인간의 경험을 이루고 있는 Nature와 Art의 세계에 대한 관심이 높았다. This thesis attempts to explore the theme of 'unity in variety' in Herrick's secular poems, Hesperides. Hesperides, which is a very thick volume of poems, is made up of so many short poems that it may seem to be unfocused and superficial. But Herrick tried to unify the diverse themes in Hesperides by interrelating them; its themes exhibit coherence or, in other words, 'unity in variety' that can be perceived by the existence of meaningful relationships between them. Among the various themes, this study deals with the themes of life & death, and Nature & Art, for they are most important in understanding Herrick. The introduction provides a brief survey of the earlier seventeenth century, examining the factors which made most poets including Herrick ponder about the issues of Nature & Art and life & death. Herrick's interest in these two themes are influenced by the conception of 'the great chain of being' and the Cavalier poets’ ideal of 'the good life'. The first part of the main body examines how Herrick thinks of the 'Times trans-shifting' and how he conquers it. Herrick thinks that man will eventually decay and die some day so in his poems he advises to enjoy the life with moderation. And Herrick also believes that he can obtain immortality through obtaining the 'Fame' as a poet; the seemingly diverse and contrasting themes of life and death are unified in this 'Fame'. The second part explores the subject of Nature and Art. Though Herrick deals with this theme quite variously according to the context of his poems, what Herrick is most interested in is the aesthetic moderation of Nature and Art. He regards the state of this moderation as 'This Sacred Grove', his Hesperides. In conclusion, Herrick unifies the theme of life and death into 'Fame', and the Nature and Art into 'This Sacred Grove'. Moreover, these two themes do not exist apart as separate entities but merge together as one by showing the meaningful relationship between them, meaningful in the sense that 'Fame' can be obtained through 'This Sacred Grove'. One of Herrick's excellence as a poet lies in this unifying power of his art.
