The main problem continuously brought forth In Eugene O'Neill's plays is that of human essence. In The Iceman Cometh, O'Neill dealt with illusion and reality as the eternal and essential human problem. He saw illusion as something directly connected life, leading to death or deathlike state when eliminated. In The Iceman O'Neill used the method of psychoanalysis to approach reality and placed the possibility of accepting this reality on the concept of Lao Tse and Chuang Tse's Tao. O'Neill was absorved in the Christian faith during his childhood and in Taoism and Freud after his youth as the theory to examine into human existence. He felt the limitation of all three theories in regards to human salvation. Through Hickey in The Iceman, he shows that the salvation theories of Christianity and Freudianism could eventually turn out to be nothing more than a pipe dream, thus suggesting their limitation. Larry shows the limitation of a westerner in accepting oriental thoughts. The reason for such limitation is the Christian concept of 'love and forgiveness' for one is neighbours which has been inveterately reigning over western thoughts. Although the pipe dreams of Hickey and Larry ended as failures, O'Neill stresses human kinship and provides through tarry, the existential power to see oneself, the death, and the world as they are and to maintain life. This ability of Larry to accept the life as it is becomes much acre clear when seen through the structure of the play. In the works after The Iceman, O'Neill no longer approached metaphysical problems to look into the truths of life. Instead, he assumed the attitude of accepting human sufferings and inconsistencies of life as they are. The Christian moral principles and humanism that pull Larry down to earth from the position of transcendence also work on O'Neill as an internal power. O'Neill no longer tries to evade this internal power and by looking squarely at it, accepts the aspect of human beings and life as they are, positively and with forgiveness. In this sense, The Iceman stands out as a turning point in O'Neill works. Having freed hisself from the obsession of salvation, he finally came to toms with human being and life. The introduction deals with the background of O'Neill's ideas and the Chapter Ⅱ investigates into the process of Hickey and tarry's arriving at reality and also the commonness and differences of the results of the two cases. The Charter Ⅲ explains through the structure how the inconsistent concepts of illusion and reality could be harmonized by the theory of Yin and Yang in Taoism. The conclusion pursues the changed aspect of O'Neill after he returned to the human and Life through the works after The Iceman.-
