Sula와 The Color Purple 연구

Abstract

This study has the purpose to examine Sula(1973) by Toni Morrison and The Color Purple(1982) by Alice Walker with the viewpoint of feminist criticism. Feminist criticism asserts that an authentic representation of women's realities and a proper understanding of woman issues should be checked to evaluate a literary work as a whole. Under this proposition women characters' realities in these two works can be studied. Their realities are regarded as the oppressive realities forced by white/male-dominated ideology on the basis of feminist theory that gender is socially structured and that structure strengthens the unequal power-relations. Bottom community is the narrow-minded patriarchal society. It defines women as daughter, wife and mother only in relation to men and never allows any role beyond its conception of women's role. Sula sought to be a more complete and freer human being than her society allows her But she couldn't find any means to fulfill herself and was dying in this narrow-minded and oppressive community. Celie's reality is also the absolute rock bottom conditioned by white/male-dominated ideology. She merely survives in this oppressive society by denying herself just as the Bottom women do. But Celie could overcome her oppressive reality and fulfil herself through the solidarity generated among women. Despite their different endings, this study concludes that these two works contain feminist vision. Sula's resistance against the oppressive definition of community reveals the unrighteousness of patriarchy. Her tragic ending emphasizes the necessity that one must seek one's own identity. And the positive values which feminism present to the oppressive society can be examined in the course of Celie's self-fulfillment. They are love against possession, respect against oppression, reciprocal help against domination, creativeness against violence, reconciliation against hatred, independence against subjection, and tolerance against narrowness. Through the examination of Sula and The Color Purple, this study concludes that feminist criticism provides a new perspective for the view of life and literary works.;본 논문은 페미니스트 비평의 시각으로 Toni Morrison의 Sula(1973)와 Alice Walker의 The Color Purple(1982)을 분석한다. 페미니스트 비평은 문학작품을 총체적으로 평가하기 위해서는 그 속에 여성의 현실이 얼마나 진실되게 재현되어 있으며, 작가의 세계관 속에 여성문제에 대한 인식이 얼마나 올바르게 자리잡고 있느냐를 보아야 한다고 주장한다. 이러한 명제하에 필자는 두 작품의 여주인공들이 현실에 주목한다. 성이 사회적으로 구성되었으며 그 구성이 불평등한 권력관계를 강화시켰다는 페미니즘 이론을 바탕으로 이들이 처한 현실은 백인/남성 중심의 이데올로기에 의해 강요되는 억압적 현실로 파악될 수 있다. Bottom마을은 여성을 딸, 부인, 어머니 등 남성과의 관계에서만 규정한 책, 이 범위를 넘어서는 어떠한 역할도 허용하지 않는 편협한 가부장제 사회이다. Sula는 이러한 Bottom공동체가 허용하는 것보다 더 완전하고 자유로운 인간이 되고자 했다. 그러나 그녀는 편협하고 억압적인 공동체에서 자아를 실현할 아무런 도구를 발견하지 못하고 죽게 된다. Celie의 현실은 백인/남성 중심의 이데올로기에 의해 최하의 위치에 자리 매겨진 억압적 현실이다. 그녀는 Bottom공동체의 여성들이 그러했듯이 이러한 억압적 현실에서 자아를 부정한 채 생존해 간다. 그러나 Celie는 다른 여성들과 유대관계를 통해 억압적 현실을 극복하고 자아를 실현한다. 두 작품은 상이한 결말에도 불구하고 페미니즘이 추구하는 미래에 대한 긍정적인 전망을 담고 있다고 분석될 수 있다. Sula의 규범에 대한 저항에서는 가부장제의 부당성이, 그녀의 비극적 결말에서는 진정한 자아를 추구해야하는 필연성이 주목될 수 있기 때문이다. Celie의 자아추구 과정에서는 페미니즘이 억압적 현실에 제시하는 긍정적인 가치 - 소유에 대한 사랑, 억압에 대한 존경, 지배에 대한 상호원조, 폭력에 대한 창조력, 증오에 대한 화해, 종속에 대한 자립, 편협에 대한 관용 - 가 드러난다. 페미니스트 비평은 우리의 세계관과 다른 문학작품에 대한 시각에 새로운 조명을 비춰주는 것이다.
