Henry James 中篇에 나타난 藝術家問題

Abstract

人生의 外面的인 면에 대한 직접 묘사를 주축으로 했던 19세기 사실주의의 흐름 속에서 Henry James는 내면 세계에 대한 심증분석이라는 새로운 사실주의를 개척하였다. 그는 世態에서부터 이탈하여 방관자가 됨으로써 보다 총체적으로 인생의 면모를 면밀히 분석하고 있다. 예술가 주제의 중편은 그의 文學期 中 중기에 속하는 것으로, 후기 작품이 가지는 완숙美는 덜하지만 James의 경험에 가장 가까운 문제를 취급한 가장 知的인 작품들로 평가된다. 이 주제는 James 당시에는 잘 알려져 있지 않은 예술 영역을 취급함으로써 예술가가 맞는 문제들을 본격적으로 탐구하고 있다. 예술가가 가지는 문제는 크게 두가지로 나타나는데 하나는 사회와의 관계에서 겪는 갈등이고 또 하나는 자신의 창작 행위와 연관된 內面的인 문제이다. The Lesson of the Master와 The Death of the Lion은 예술가의 對社會的 문제를 中心으로 그리고 The Madonna of the Future와 The Real Thing, Greville Fane 그리고 The Middle Years는 창작 행위와 연관된 예술가의 태도와 의식을 中心으로 문제의 근원을 파헤치고 있다. 이들 작품 속에서 예술가의 문제는 깊은 좌절의 양상을 띠우고 있는데 이것은 예술가에게 필연적으로 다가오는 갈등을 과장하는 효과를 주고 있다. 즉 사회와 예술은 타협이 절대로 불가능한 두 체제이고 예술 행위는 엄정한 개념과 태도로써 이루어져야 한다는 것이 James의 주장인데 작품 속의 人物들은 사회와의 분리가 이루어지지 않았기 때문에 혹은 자기 자신의 예술에 대한 착오 때문에 좌절되고 있다. 따라서 이들 중편은 예술을 보다 강화된 人生이라고 보고 오로지 文學에만 전념했던 James의 삶 방식을 가장 잘 대변해주고 있는 것이다.;국 영문초록 수록;Henry James cultivated a new realism by analyzing the innermost aspects of man at a time when most of the realistic novelists in 19th century depicted direct the outer aspects of life. Yet, he analyzed them more fully by the way of making himself an outcast observer freed from any social issues of his times rather than belonged to them. All the nouvelles of the artistic theme were written in his so called 'middle period', which can not be valued as so much having magnitude that his later works have. But they are the most intellectual tales in which James deals the things that are the nearest to his experiences. In these stories of the artist, he explores seriously the artistic field that was almost unknown in his times. The problems of the artist, though very variable, can be outlined in two categories. The ones are conflicts originated from the artist's relationship with society, and the others are more inward problems generated from in connection with the artist's own creativity. In The Lesson of the Master and The Death of the Lion, Jemes stresses the artist's problem which is correlative with society, and in the works like The Madonna of the Future, The Real Thing, Greville Fane and The Middle Years, he scrutinizes the prblem's origin by tracing the artist's attitude and consciousness related to his creative activity. The artistic problems in these works assume an aspect of deep-down frustration, which obtains such an effect to exaggerate the necessary conflicts that come up to the artist. That is, it is because of James's claim that the art and society are absolutely uncompromising to each other and that the artistic activity must be constituted with strict definition and attitude, the artist in the story is frustrated because the necessary disparity between the art and society is not formed, or because of his own misunderstanding or art. Consequently, the nouvelles of the artistic theme represent best Jemes's way of living that was concentrated only on literature according to his regard the art as a more intensified life than life itself.
