Edward Albee 後期 作品 硏究

Abstract

This thesis aims to study Edward Albee's two later works, Tiny Alice (1964) and The Lady From Dubuque (1979). In his early works from The Zoo Story (1958) to Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1962), Albee shows his social-critical concern for the sickness of the modern American society. Such an attitude, however, has been changed starting from Tiny Alice written in 1964. In Tiny Alice, Albee deals with the concept of 'Reality'. Being skeptical about the objective reality which has been taken for granted and regarded as absolute, Albee brings in his view of relative reality, that is, there exists "Multi-Layer Reality" which could be interpreted in various ways according to one who perceives it. The second part of this thesis makes 2 approaches to Albee's "Multi-Layered Reality" in Tiny Alice: One is technical and the other is thematic approach. The result of the technical approach shows that Albee gives one word that can be understood in various ways, and establish on his stage the model that duplicates Miss Alice's castle ceaselessly. Albee's techniques as such are helpful to understand the theme of Tiny Alice which pursues the inner process of Julian's recognition of the "Multi-Layered Reality". The focus of the drama is laid upon an individual's recognition in Tiny Alice. Meanwhile, in The Lady From Dubuque Albee deals with the conflicts and shows his attempt to solve the conflict due to the difference of their views of reality. Albee, suggesting the relativity of the truth that affirms the truth-fullness of each "Multi-Layered Reality," offers the vision of love which makes it possible to accept other's view of reality. Albee's later works deal with the considerably profound subjects. It can not be dinied, however, that, as many critics point out, they lack the vividness and the strong message which are the characteristics of his early works. Nevertheless, Albee deserves high evaluation in that he pursues his concept of 'Reality' in his later works with steady efforts.;본 논문은 Edward Albee(1928- )의 후기작품인 Tiny Alice(1964)와 The Lady from Dubuque(1979)의 분석연구를 목적으로 한다. Albee는 The Zoo Story(1958)에서 Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?(1962)에 이르는 그의 초기작품에서 주로 현대 미국사회의 병폐에 대한 사회비평적 관심을 표명하였다. 그러나 이와같은 그의 태도는 Tiny Alice를 기점으로 변화하기 시작한다. Tiny Alice에서 Albee가 중점적으로 다루는 주제는 '현실'(reality)의 개념 문제이다. 눈에 보이는 객관적 현실만이 절대적이라는 기존의 현실관에 회의를 품은 그는, 겉으로 보이는 현실 이면에는 여러가지 의미로 해석되어질 수 있는 "다양한 계층의 현실"(Multi-Layered Reality)이 존재한다는 상대적 현실관을 제시하고 있다. 본 논문의 제2장에서 필자는 "Multi-Layered Reality"라고 규정해 볼 수 있는 Albee의 현실개념을 기법적 측면과 주제적 측면으로 나누어 살펴보고자 했다. 극의 기법면에서 Albee는 하나의 단어에 다양하게 해석될 수 있는 복합적 의미를 부여하거나, Miss Alice가 살고있는 성(城)의 연속적 복사물인 'Model'을 무대배경으로 설정함으로써 그의 현실개념을 부각시킨다. 한편 주제면에서는 주관적 세계에 갇혀있던 주인공 Julian이 다양한 계층의 현실을 인식해 나가는 내적추구의 과정을 보여준다. Tiny Alice에서는 Julian 한 사람의 현실인식과정에 작가의 촛점에 맞추어졌던 반면, 1979년에 발표된 The Lady front Dubuque에서는 다양한 현실계층을 각각의 관점에서 이해하기 때문에 발생하는 인간사이의 갈등 및 이를 해소해 보려는 작가 Albee의 노력이 제시되고 있다. Albee는 다양한 계층의 현실이 모두 진실일 수 있다는 진리의 상대성을 지적함으로써, 모든 사람의 각기 가지고 있는 다양한 관점을 수용해야 한다는 적극적인 사랑의 비젼을 갈등의 해결책으로 제시한다. Albee의 작품세계는 후기에 이르러 그의 사상 발전과 함께 심오한 주제들을 다루고 있다. 그러나 많은 비평가들이 지적하듯, 초기 작품에서 볼수있었던 생동감, 작품자체가 전달하는 멧세지의 강렬함등이 후기작품에서는 감소되었음을 부인할수 없다. 그럼에도 불구하고 위의 두 작품을 통해서, 현실개념 인식이라는 주제를 자신의 문학을 통해 꾸준히 추구한 Albee의 성숙한 면모를 높이 평가해야 할 것이다.
