Faulkner의 Soldiers' Pay와 As I Lay Dying은 죽음을 중심주제로 유사한 구조를 이루고 있다. 두 작품에서 제시되는 죽음은 살아있는 죽음(death-in-life)의 형태로, 삶과 죽음의 복합적인 의미를 특수화시키고 있다. 두 작품은 주인공의 죽어가는 과정에서 형성되는 인물들의 반응을 다루고 있다. 주인공의 죽음상태에 대한 인물들의 다양한 반응형태는 그들 개인 및 가정, 사회를 나타내는 한편, 각성과 극복의 과정을 통해 삶에 새로운 전환의 계기를 가져온다. Soldiers' Pay는 중상을 입고 귀향한 전쟁영웅 Donald Mahon의 죽음을 중심으로 전쟁으로 인한 비극적 양상을 그리고 있다. As I Lay Dying은 Addie Bundren의 장례의식을 통해 Bundren 가정의 문제를 다루고 있다. Donald와 Addie가 죽어가는 과정에서 주변 인물들은 제각기 다른 반응과 문제, 갈등을 경험하며, 그들의 궁극적인 죽음에 대한 인식과 각성으로써 삶의 변화를 가져온다. 두 작품에서 죽음은 삶의 불합리하고 파괴적인 힘으로서 나타나고 있지만, Faulkner는 실존에 있어 죽음의 역할을 부정하지 않는다. And they bring the opportunity of developing their lives into them through the process of recognizing and overcoming the death. Soldiers' Pay describes the tragic aspect of war through the death of War Hero received a serious wound. As I Lay Dying treats the dosmestic problems of Bundrens through the funeral journey. The characters surrounding them experience the various conflicts and confrontations in the process of dying of Donald Mahon and Addie Bundrun and develop their ability of awareness of life by accepting their ultimate death. The death in two novels represents the absurdity and destructive power of life, but the author does not negate the death's role in human existence. The death paradoxically becomes the self-realization in two heroes and in other characters the chance of more developed recognition of life. Faulkner emphasizes the overcoming of the absurdity and emptiness of life through the endeavors of man to cope with the death. He present the faith in the possibility of man as an immortal being by his spiritual ability of endurance, sacrifice and compassion.
