Abstract
Books Ⅰ & Ⅱ of The Faerie Queene are closely linked in their theme and structure. The relationship between human strenght and Grace can be regarded as one of the major themes in these two books. As a Protestant and a Renaissance epic poet, Spenser perceives that the ture heroism comes not just from the heroic human stength but ultimately from the hero's recognition of God's grace. Book Ⅰ aims to show the relationship between God and man, which is expounded in a Biblical allegory. Red Cross, purchasing Holiness with courage and great virtues, makes a venture to destroy the Dragon. However, he falls into sin because of his distrust in God and his over-estimation of his ability. Red Cross is consequently imprisoned in a deep dugeon. To this fallen man, Grace shows mercy through the figure of Arthur. Armed with Grace and faith, Redcross is ready to fight the Dragon. He wins the battle with Christ's loving Grace, which is embodied in the well of Life and the Tree of life. Whereas Book Ⅰ is based on a Biblical allegory, Book Ⅱ's frame of reference is mostly classical in nature. But Spenser expands the idea of temperance from the level of classical ethics to the level of Christian temperance. Guyon's mission is to defeat Acrasia, who is the essence of concupicience that can turn a man into a slave of sin. Although Guyon is a good and temperate knight, he nevertheless falls into the temptation of enemies embodying various intemperance. This also indicates his limitation, the limitation of a human being without divine guidance. Once again Grace in the form of Arther and Palmer helps him to fulfil his duty, thus, to become a true hero. Spenser's ultimate aim in theses two books is to show that a man cannot perfect the spiritual virtue by his great virtues only. Man's perfect virtue can be achieved through his trust in God-His mercy, and Providence. Heroism is only a form of the divine Grace.
