John Donne의 종교시에 나타난 죄와 구원의 과정

Abstract

John Donne expressed his spiritual experience in divine poems. In this respect, his divine poems are distinguished from other religious poems of his contemporaries. The subject of his divine poems has more individual aspect than that of others. Donne showed the process of salving to conquer the problems of sin and death with his own effort. He vividly described the fear of sin and death in imagery. He awared the sin and death that his sin and death could be conquered God's grace alone. He came to view God as a savior and conqueror. Donne imagined the Christ on the cross. He was convinced that his salvation is completed by the Christ on the cross. This conviction was accomplished by the resurrection of Christ. This process of realizing salvation by God's grace relates to the structure of Holy Sonnets. The meditative structure and dialectic methodes can analyse through out his works. His unique religious experiences well organized in logical structure of his divine poems.;Donne은 종교시에서 죄와 죽음의 문제를 극복해가는 과정을 보여준다. 언제나 죄의식과 함께 죽음의 공포에 시달리는 그의 모습은 시 속에서 생생한 심상과 함께 구체적으로 나타난다. 그는 죄와 죽음의 문제를 극복하기 위해 노력했으나, 결국 이것은 인간의 힘으로는 해결하기 힘든 문제이며 오직 신의 은총만으로 극복할 수 있음을 깨닫는다. 그는 신의 은총인, 인간의 죄를 대속하여 십자가에 달려 돌아가신 그리스도의 희생을 통해 죽음에서 구원을 확신하는 모습을 보여준다. 그의 이러한 구원에 대한 확신은 그리스도가 완성시킨 죽음은 곧 부활이라는 기독교의 부활신앙에 대한 믿음 위에서 이루어지는 것이다. 다양한 종교적 경험 세계를 표현하고 있는 Donne의 종교시는 당시의 종교시와 구별이 된다. Donne은 Protestant로써 개인의 구원은 신의 은총에 의해서만 이루어진다는 생각을 지니고 있다. 그러나 다른 시인들은 자신의 공적에 의해서 구원될 수 있다는 신념을 지니고 있는 것이다. 죄와 죽음을 자신의 힘으로 극복하고자 했던 그는 죄의식으로 인해 절망과 고민속에 빠져 있으며 신과의 관계에서 멀어져 고독과 공포감이 생겨서 신의 영원한 형벌을 두려워하게 된다. 이러한 상황에서 그는 죄를 용서받기 위해 몸부림친다. 또한 죽음의 문제에 부딪힌 시인은 죽음으로부터 벗어나기 위해 필사적으로 노력한다. 결국 그의 종교시는 그가 신의 은총을 믿음으로서 피와 죽음으로부터의 구원을 확신하게 되는 과정을 그린 것이라 할 수 있다. 그는 죽음을 더 이상 두렵게 생각하지 않고 오히려 영원한 영광의 세계로 들어가는 관문이라 생각하며 신은 우리를 구원의 길로 인도하는 자비로운 존재임을 깨닫게 된다. 이러한 Donne의 독특한 종교적 체험이 Sonnet의 구조속에서 짜임새 있게 잘 조직화되어 있다.
