Abstract
In order to present the significance of Karl Barth's Christology, this the sis has first dealt with christological problems in theological Liberalism and Contemporary theology The quest of the historical Jesus in nineteenth century was initiated by the Positivistic understanding of history as consisting of brute facts. The quest of historical Jesus was originally the quest after the Jesus of Nazareth who actually lived in first-century alestin, unrestricted by the doctrinal Presentations of him in Bible, creed and church. Therefore their interest was not Jesus' divine nature, but historical Jesus. But the basic reorientation consisted in the discovery that the Gospel are the devotional literature of the primitive church, rather than the oldest sources as the same kind of objective, positivistic historiography. Therefore the Kerygma has increasingly come to replace the theological entrality of the historical Jesus, If the nineteenth-century found its meaningful expression in the historical Jesus, the twentieth century has found in the Kerygma. Barth's basic position is that the theme theology is God's revelation, therefore the proclamation of exalted Lord through the church is in continuity with Hesus of Nazareth. With this Presupposition, Barth attempted to show that Jesus' divine nature consist in his History. In Jesus Christ we have to do with very Go. That God as God is able and willing and ready to condescend, to humble himself is mystery of the deity of Christ. But this includes in itself His obedience of suffering, i.e., (1) the obedience of the Son to the Father, shown (2) in his self-humiliation. His way into the far country, fulfilled in His death on the cross. Then Jesus christ was and is "for us" in that He took our place as our Judge, in that He took the place of us sinners, in that He suffered and was crucified and died, in that He has done this before God and has therefore done right. But the reconcilation with God has also the aspect that it is the end of the world. But again there is to be a genuine beyond. This event is the awakening or resurrection. His new life confirmed His death. It was God's Answer to His death.
